Having an 'outside threat' helps keep United States citizens in line and focused(on other things besides the guys who are making off with all of their money). The 'War on Terror' was being used for this, but has lost most of its steam, so the idea is to kick start a new Cold War with the same old enemy- it worked so well for so long.
but I enjoy it immensely. I already played through it once, and am 30% through it a second time, trying to finish everything I can before the epilogue. It's definitely not as mundane as collecting 900 korok seeds.:)
modern cars are basically fully electronic, it seems like it wouldn't be too much of a stretch to pull the IC/tran and replace it with an electric drive train. It seems like there is a business model in there somewhere.
