  8. The First Couple Paragraphs on The Tyranny of Email · · Score: 2, Informative
    FROM THE NOW /.ed LINK

Email is one of the greatest things the computer revolution has done for personal productivity. Used improperly, it can alsohurt your productivity. This article discusses ways to use email effectively. Then it goes beyond that and talks about how to be productive, period.

    When Email Goes Bad

I'm not going to list all the reasons email is good. You know them already, I assume you are an avid email user. (Anyone reading this is online, and just about anyone who goes online uses email.) I'm also not going to tell you email is evil, because it isn't.The negativeproductivity impact of email comes from the way you use it, not the medium itself.

There are two ways email impairs your productivity:

    1. It breaks your concentration.
    2. It misleads you into inefficient problem solving.
  9. That Sucks on The Internship That Students Drool Over · · Score: 1

While I can't speak from the female pov, I heard a good number of stories about ppl having just horrible internships and bad mentors. Unfortunatly I think some people just get the bad ones at MS. I'm sorry it didn't go better, or you didn't had a better group.

While neither of my internships were bad, the second was more enjoyable, the group just got along better and worked better I think.

  10. Microsoft's Crackdown on Do You Write Backdoors? · · Score: 1

This is all hearsay from stuff I remember

A couple years ago the MS managers told all their developers that if they placed any easter eggs or any other sort of non spec'd items in their code they would be more or less fired. This came from an agreement with the government that anything in Windows that was not spec'd to be there would be considered dangerous and harmful, and the government would not be able to use Windows at all in that case.

  12. Apple Recording Studio Settlement? on Apple to Launch Music Service? · · Score: 1

This makes me think about the settlement between Apple Computer and Apple Recording back when Apple started putting microphones in their computers.

When apple first came around, they made a settlement with the already existing Apple Recording that Apple Computer could use the Apple name as long as they never entered the music recording business. Apple later included Microphones in their systems and Apple Recording sued apple. I forget the outcome but obviously it was in Apple Computers favor ultimately.

Apple releasing an on line music service seems like they are just stepping all over the original settlement all over again.

  13. Ozone Also Kills Bacteria and Fungi on Ozone As Pesticide · · Score: 1

Interesting timing. From Science daily today

"Led by TSRI President Richard Lerner, Ph.D. and Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry Paul Wentworth, Jr, Ph.D., who made the original discovery, the team has been slowly gathering evidence over the last few years that the human body produces the reactive gas [ Ozone ]--most famous as the ultraviolet ray-absorbing component of the ozone layer--as part of a mechanism to protect it from bacteria and fungi. 14. Unbiased on Windows vs. Unix Revisited · · Score: 4, Insightful

It's written by a self proclaimed Unix evangelist, so don't expect it to be unbiased

I really think that anything that comes from a *nix or windows outfit is not worth printing if you want an actual objective review. It may give objective reviewers something to base their reviews on if they survey stories from all sides, but to the average person these sided arguements are just marketing. I'm not going to believe MS or <insert *nix outfit here> on this issue.

  16. Different Arms of MS on Microsoft Fights to Weaken Washington Anti-Spam Law · · Score: 1

I'm not sure how the Hotmail and MSN arms of MS are organized but I'd say they are different arms that aren't communicating with each other, one pro spam the other anti spam.

afai remember Hotmail is based out of CA, and I'm not sure where MSN is.

  17. Barely Handle Windows on Linux in High School Labs · · Score: 1

We all know the average kid can handle computers better than the average adult. Can't figure out how to get yoru VCR to stop flashing "12:00"? Give your kid the remote and stand back...

    They are ideographs, not words

Just because the ideographs are different doesn't change that the words are pronounced with the same sound. The tone is all that changes the meaning.

  23. Not meant to be 100% on Pennsylvania Court Forces ISPs to Block Porn Sites · · Score: 1

In addition, the court ordered blocking may prevent access to legitimate sites that are hosted on the same server.

I don't think policies like this are meant to actually block 100% of the targeted sites, but simply to make them as unaccessible as possible. If such a targeted site is found to not be blocked I'm sure all it takes is reporting it to the ISP and it will be added to the block list.

What I'm curious is if something like this will start going to other levels like P2P and newsgroups, where ISPs have to block any file or newsgroup that matches in a list of keyword regexp that denote child porn, I know RCN, my ISP, already does it for newsgroups.
