  1. Well for me.... on Appleseed World Preview Minireview · · Score: 0

I watch it not because American animation is bad (it's not), but because American animation is almost ALL based on comedy (or a Disney sappy love story). Don't get me wrong, I like these shows as well, but there could be so much more.

There is tones of anime to choose from, many different genre's, including comedy. In fact I would go as far to say as there is probably an anime series out there for every different type of person. I think the only thing that brings anime down is that so many of them can't resist putting in an anime cliche.

I myself am just watching through Read or Die and Read or Die TV series and it is really good, you just won't find something like this in American animation. Then again you won't find something like Aqua Teen Hunger Force in an anime. ;)

  3. Quite a few I have not heard of but.... on Locus 2003 Recommended Reading List · · Score: 4, Informative

Quite a few authors I have not read...and me being a fantasy addict....

"The Crystal City, Orson Scott Card (Tor)"

I am actually just now reading though this series. I sometimes can't believe just how deep he seems to build this alternative look at america. I admit I am just finishing the third book but I am hooked already.

"The War of the Flowers, Tad Williams (DAW)"

I don't know how Tad ever got the chance to write. His first book was about cats, it was not very good and he even mentions that it took forever to find someone to publish it. He then went on to write his great Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series...and then on to his amazing Sci-Fi Otherworld series. The War of flowers was good but not as amazing as his last series.

"Fool's Fate, Robin Hobb (Voyager; Bantam Spectra 2004)"

I did not even know the third one was out (or is it?..a quick check of chapters seems to think not, in my local stores...if it is I better get to the book store fast!). If you have any interest in the fantasy genre then you have to go give these a read NOW! Each book she publishes seem to get better and better with no end in sight. I often find that many authors seem to hit their "peak" and then taper off (Hey I am looking at you Robert Jordan) but that is just not the case here.

And just to ruin my many image (please oh please don't let anyone I know find this post), she was the first author to actually make me cry while reading one of her books...(shhhh don't tell).

Thats all I have read (well kinda) off that list.

I am not a software dveloper...so maybe I don't know how it works. I was thinking that perhaps they just wanted to build their compiler, without waiting for their patches to be approved (or not) and having to deal with the time it takes. With their own compiler they can work on it right there, in house and in full control of how it is done.

But I guess they could of just released a fork of gcc how they wanted it though. Who knows.

  13. Re:I Own All Three Consoles... on The State of the Game Console Wars · · Score: 1

I also own all three consoles....and have almost the exact opposite view as you.

I find myself playing games on my Ps2 the most, the main reason is that I enjoy cinematic, linear story RPG's that square (square enix...whatever) and a few other companies produce. There are (were) also a few blockbuster games on the ps2 you could just not get anywhere else (GTA3, Vice City...now on PC,GT3 and others). While now lagging down in the low end for hardware...you just can't beat the titles on PS2.

The xbox probably has the best hardware of the lot (heck it should being so big), but has few blockbuster games...although Halo, Buffy, Panzer Dragon Orta, Brute Force and a few others were quite amazing. The on-line play (although not free) is very slick and easy. As a side note, modding it also turns it into the ultimate multimedia machine ;)The xbox takes second place IMHO.

My gamecube is very dejected. The few games I bought for it have not held my attention for very long. Quite a few of the games seem kind of pick up and have some twitch fun...which is great if you like those games. Even the great Zelda could not hold my attention...although my friends loved it. The only game I am looking forward to is Final Fantasy Cronicles.

  15. I just don't know. on DVD Burner Round-up · · Score: 1

I keep almost buying a DVD burner but I just can't bring myself to do so. With a CD burner it was a large step up in storage space compared to the standard floppy, and was easily read anywhere as almost everyone had a CD-ROM (as apposed to other solutions such as zip, jazz, etc).

DVD burners on the other hand don't quite seem to offer enough for me to justify buying one. My files are hardly over 700 megs, the media is still quite expensive, it's useless already for hard drive backups and I can't back up my own movies with it anyway (if they are double sided I suppose).

No doubt they will become standard some day as CD-RW's are these days. The drives and media will just become so cheap that they might as well include them.

  17. If you like Martin...check out Hobb.. on A Game of Thrones · · Score: 1
I think she is relatively unknown...I am not quite sure, but I think her latest book (Golden Fool : The Tawny Man) has been the best written fantasy story I have read to date....simply amazing.

The bad (if you want to call it that) is that you will have to read her first two trilogies:

    The Farseer Trilogy and

    Liveship Traders Series

to really understand the latest one (the main character is from the first triligy...but also alludes to the second series some...but you could get by without reading it).

I keep telling others that she is one of the very few people I find that don't start off great then loose steam (I'm looking at you Robert Jordan!). Each book she releases seems to get better and better!

Heck, even it's amazon link says people who bought this book bought Martins series...check it out. You just might like it.

I mainly ended up using Monkeys Audio and FLAC as they ended up being the most compatible with the program I was using. What surprised me though was how much faster Monkeys compressed in comparison to FLAC...with monkeys having slightly smaller files no less.
