Interesting. From Da Vinci to Fermi and beyond, the state has supported and funded scientific research. In fact, I don't think there has ever been a scientific advance that wasn't either funded by or directly based on research funded by the state. Caves may be fine for some but I prefer many of the comforts of modern society.
How much money will your tool vendor make if you implement this suggestion and what, if any, product does she sell that neatly solves any problems this might bring up?
Two years ago I had bought a home and wasn't sure how to handle m y taxes so I stopped into H&R Block. The guy I talked to spent 5 minutes explaining what I needed to do and advised me to file them myself and save the money. Ever since then, I have religiously purchased TaxCut from H&R Block to do my taxes and I always will. Even if it means keeping a Windows partition to use once per year. I will never touch TurboTax given Quicken's attitude that my computer is their's to do with as they please.
I swear to God that nearly every article filed under YRO is about some new hip flavor of software that will, inevitably, be used to unlawfully distribute intellectual property.
One man's pirate is another man's freedom fighter.
I wonder if there's any legal whatchamacallit for this? After all, it could be argued that the emails are the Marine's property and, after his death, become the property of his surviving kin. Yahoo's "corporate policies" don't get to decide if the courts say otherwise. But then, what the hell do I know?
Keeping all the criminals in one place (China) is great. I blocklist all of China, Taiwan and Korea and don't have to worry about these trespassers. I do feel sorry for those folks that have to communicate with them, but just consider it the price of doing business.
The Earth will be just fine. It will go on evolving as it has for billions of years. We humans, however, may not be so fortunate if we don't change our habits. As George Carlin once said, "the Earth will shake us off like a bad cold".
Actually, we did oust Saddam for being a bad person. The claims that he was seeking "nucular" technology were fraudulent. The claims he had WMD were fraudulent. The claims he assisted Al Qaeda were fraudulent. It was a fraud from beginning to end. Saddam was actually an encircled and emasculated weakling with a big mouth. Nothing more.
It's not just math and it's not just school. Look at President Bush - he cultivates and is proud of the fact that he is not interested in education and learning new things. One of the reasons he was elected in the first place was that he is a "regular guy".

The most helpful thing you can do for these people is to sit the fuck down, shut the fuck up, and to do what you're told.
This is true, but not useful. It is the most helpful thing you can do for "these people", however, the most helpful thing you can do for yourself is to wait for the advice of your lawyer and do nothing and say nothing until then. If they are asking you for help, then you are a syadmin of some sort. As such (pay attention now) YOU ARE HIGH ON THE LIST OF POSSIBLE SUSPECTS. Don't make things worse for yourself by inadvertently saying or doing something to incriminate yourself
After RTFA, I didn't see any of the spammers claiming that the Lycos screensaver had taken down their site. Did I miss something? Is the media making up this claim out of thin air. There are a lot of reasons the sites could be down, including the possibility that the spammer's want it to look like Lycos is DDOsing them.
What's the compelling reason to switch to Linux? No viruses? If they can't operate Windows well enough to not get a virus, they can't manage the little foibles inherent in Linux.
Add a USB flash drive for data persistence and you've got your desktop in your pocket. Anywhere you go , you can access your stuff. Even without the flash drive, you can send soem email, whip out an essay, or dozens of other tasks. It's pretty handy, but obviously not something everybody would like for a gift.
That's weird because the reply that Dick Cheney got was, "Come on over. We're all hoarding flowers to throw at you guys when you get here. Don't be frightened of the noise - it's just us cheering. You guys roll on through and we'll have our stock market all set up and ready to go. You won't need to do a thing".
There ain't a lot that you can do in this town You drive down to the lake and then you turn back around You go to school and you learn to read and write So you can walk into the county bank and sign away your life I work at the fillin' station on the interstate Pumpin' gasoline and countin' out of state plates They ask me how far into Memphis son, and where's the nearest beer And they don't even know that there's a town around here
Someday I'm finally gonna let go 'Cause I know there's a better way And I wanna know what's over that rainbow I'm gonna get out of here someday
Now my brother went to college cause he played football I'm still hangin' round cause I'm a little bit small I got me a 67 Chevy, she's low and sleek and black Someday I'll put her on that interstate and never look back
NONE of this would be a problem IF the government could balance the budget.
Looking back over the past 25 years or so it is clear that the government CAN balance the budget. It is just the Republicans that cannot.

they need another way to incentivize (is that even a word?) their employees.
It's a perfectly cromulent word.

Did anyone else read the headline and think this was some horrible spoof on "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy"?
... no.
Well, now that you mention it
I swear to God that nearly every article filed under YRO is about some new hip flavor of software that will, inevitably, be used to unlawfully distribute intellectual property.
One man's pirate is another man's freedom fighter.
The reason I did not care, is that throughout high school no one could show me a use for it.
Hey buddy - got six quarters for a dollar?
Consider yourself "shown".

But then, what the hell do I know?
Preferably in another building
In another city.
Why would buying a product that's presumably been tested and deemed ready for the marketplace be "begging for trouble", whatever "generation" it is?
Two words: Ford Pinto
Accomplices ARE criminals. How is calling them such "rediculous"?

You'll notice that the decline in our schools has exactly matched the rise of conservatives to power. Coincidence?

A better analogy would be that it's like sending someone to pour glue down the barrel of a murderer's gun.
You forgot to credit that quote:
