  1. Farewell to E&B (a year later) on MMORPG Circle of Life · · Score: 2, Insightful

I have no idea what the % of E&B players were that migrated to Star Wars Galaxies, a game without space ships when it started, or EVE. I left E&B for SWG, EVE had no draw for me as I couldn't get out of my ship and be a true person in a RPG world.

E&B had player balance issues as do all MMORPGs, the ID Matrix giving certain users on the server godlike abilities compared to the 1000s of other players out there and then nerfing them down to worthless status. I was one of the lucky ones who got to make tons of items with one. When the nerf came down, I left the game and started playing SWG. I knew they had database issues using flat files and no good editing tools, tons of devices and weapons had bad or non-existent drop rates and crafting became insane with tons of items never learnable after countless failures in deconstruction. The buyout and closing of Westwood all predicted the death of E&B long before this.

I had loads of fun living out in space, helping newbs out with my top notch building and travel tours, and performing scouting duties at Tada-Oh gate for my guild.

Hopefully the Sci-fi genre can produce another game with a budget to do it right again and keep getting better.

It is called 'potential'. Bandwidth to most means the capacity of a circuit, not the size of a packet sent. And yes most wireless access points do rate scaling. 11Mbit, 5.5Mbit, 2Mbit, 1Mbit. Not that most libraries or networks in general are going to have an Internet connection faster than the LAN speed.

Just because you already own BF1942 doesn't mean I do. I particularly am not into WWII, I figured bolt-action rifles to not be my style. I purchased BF Vietnam well knowing it was 'just like BF1942 but with palm trees'. Same thing goes for UT2k4, if there is 'just one feature added' don't buy it. It isn't for you. They gave a rebate to those who already had 2003 as well, knowing people like you would say these things. FPS on console, what can I say.. Goldeneye would have been so slammed by PC gamers for being a piece of shit I would agree porting to another platform would be a mistake. What? I can't fall? I can't jump off of stairs? Goldeneye was about 5 years behind the physics of other PC FPSs when it came out. Now all they need is for some REAL (read PC) FPS gamers to be able to take out all the console fanboys with the tools of the trade, trusty old mouse and keyboard.

When those systems break, or need maintainence, at least those unix programmers and sysadmins will have job opportunities to compete with the MCSE's working on the Exchange and IIS systems. No one makes money writing Open Source, they make their money doing customizations. That is the business model. And as for giving back to the community, the point is that those who program in their spare time can have full time jobs dealing with maintaining others codes and they may have the power to give back.

Topic does apply to you very well. People who bitch about grouping in MMORPGs should just drop the MMO part. Why bother paying a monthly fee when you don't want other people there? When game companies cater to whiners who want to solo everything, they end up making the game too easy, which allows power-gamers to level up to the top ranks in days and get bored and bitch about lack of content.
