  1. Re:Has anybody noticed... on Microsoft Dismisses Apple's iTunes for Windows · · Score: 1

I'd be inclined to believe the same but I've tried ripping The Ninth on plenty of computers with loads of ripping software with no success. iTunes did take a looooooooong time but it got the job done. I had ripped them before in the primitive analog fashion before but it sounded like crap (I did not feel like fooling around with the CD volume levels). I might have been doing something wrong with all the other software, though.

No problems here... I've got a P4 2.4GHz w/HT, 1GB RAM running Server 2003 at the office; a Via Epia M with a C3 600 MHz 256MB at home running Win2k Professional; and my dad has a Presario running at 800 MHz with 128 MB RAM with XP Pro (let me say this setup is slow as ass) and yet I've had no problems with iTunes. It has even been able to rip my Beethoven CD's, a feat no other ripping software has accomplished (bit scratchy, my cd's are!). I only wish iTunes could run under OpenBSD, so I could try it on my P3@700 and my Via Epia C3@800; and that the iTunes store worked outside the US (the preview feature kicks ass).
As of right now, I'm listening to Thievery Corporation without a hitch.

Let's start this by stating that I am not pro-Microsoft. In fact, I dislike Microsoft software very much (unfortunately I have to use VS.NET at work). I've been trying out (not double-booting, by the way) a butt-load of Linux distros since 98, and I used Debian a helluva lot (first *NIX OS I ever tried). I have been using OpenBSD since last year (those who hate MS use Linux, those who love UNIX use *BSD) and I'm not switching anymore.
After having said all this, I'd like to know what's up with the double standards?
SCO tries to take the whole Linux community hostage, everybody goes apeshit (I'm with you Linux people on that one). But when a couple of Linux advocates try to take the Xbox hostage, it's all fine and dandy. Why is this?
If you don't like what MS has done with their platform (it might be your hardware, but it's their platform) then don't buy it. I don't like the Xbox, so I haven't bought one. Why buy it if you're just going to bitch and moan about it all day long?
If you dislike their products so much, vote with your fucking money, and put it elsewhere, no sense going "M$ is teh sux" and then run into Egghead (or wherever the fuck you go) and spending your ass off lining M$ pockets.
By the way, the Xbox hardware sucks, and you'd be better off getting Linux running on an NES...

VC++ 7 (which uses the VS.NET IDE) might work for games. AFAIK, VC++ 7 generates native Win32 code, while the other languages generate CLR code.
I have no idea how fast VC++ 7 is compared to the previous versions, but I know for a fact it's way faster than C# code (and I guess it kicks VB.NET in the balls).
Some of the managed classes might be useful for some aspect of a game (savegames is the only thing that I could come up with right off the top of my head), yet .NET code is painfully slow.

It's the reason I bought a bunch of copies of Half-Life: added value. A couple friends of mine had pirate copies of HL and they went through the single player missions in a couple of days, but when another friend of mine bought a legal version and told them about WON they immediately bought legal versions. As for me, I wasn't into playing games anymore, until I was introduced to CStrike. Then I bought a bunch of copies for the PC's at home.
Bon Jovi's taking a great step, intead of treating their "customers" as thieves they're adding some great value to the purchase of a legal copy.
Yet, the real "evolution" here is coming to terms with the fact that those who copy your album off the net are most likely not going to spend a cent on your ass. Why spend so much money on protected cd's, suing napster, etc... if those people are not going to create revenue anyways.
Now I'm not supporting stealing, but artists and labels should try to think of downloaders as people who are lent CD's by their friends. If they really like what they listen, it's highly probable that they'll spend money on that cd.

  20. RHAT != MSFT on Is Red Hat the Microsoft of Linux? · · Score: 1

Before ranting ask yourselves one question: how can RHAT monopolize GNU/Linux?
How can something that is free and freely redistributable in source code form be monopolized?
How can they monopolize Linux, if they provide the source code to their own distribution for others to peruse?
Having a profitable business does not necessarily mean stepping over other companies.
Besides, look at me, I have been free to try a bunch of distros all for free, with nobody behind my back pushing me in one direction or the other
(which is more than I can say about MSFT). I have freely used Debian, Caldera, Corel, Mandrake, RedHat, and Gentoo (and I have currently settled for OpenBSD, which I find lovely and simple, except for the disk partitioning, which is a bit weird unless you try to draw a parallel between that and HPUX's partitioning-volume scheme).
Some might say: "But a lot of companies are releasing commercial software that requires RedHat x.x!!!"... Well, maybe those companies think RedHat is a more professional distro, or one of their PHB's likes it best; in the end it's their prerogative to support whichever platform they think is best for their product.
Stop blaming it all on RHAT, and try to make your favorite distro more visible to big companies for a change (how? I don't know. Go figure it out). We're all supposed to be on the same side: we're all (free *NIX users at least) users (and some of you are developers) of free software. If we fight among ourselves, how are we supposed to battle evil MSFT and conquer the desktop-sever-enterprise-whatever?
Now, if I could use *NIX at my workplace, instead of this hideous W2K monstrocity (though you have to admit VS.NET is a lot nicer than VS6.0 and C# is nicer than C++ IMHO)...
