Just a quick point of curiousity: Why is my usage of "Final Fantasy Origins" considered "[sic]"? I didn't misspell anything. That's the American title of the collection.

Now, as for the ROM offsets being the same, you'll have to be a lot more specific. Especially with respect to "the programming files." SNES emulation on the PS1 is, quite simply, not feasable. It is possible, in the sense that any Turing Machine can emulate the functionality of any other Turing Machine, but speed is a consideration with respect to games, and the PS1 lacks both the speed and memory capacity to accurately emulate the SNES in real time.

  5. Re:What I don't understand... on When Lack Of Pixelation Leads To Consternation · · Score: 5, Informative

Why isn't there a moderation option for "blatantly false?"

No, The PS1 re-releases in Final Fantasy Origins and Chronicles were not emulations of the SNES originals. Yes, Chrono Trigger (and possibly some of the FF series) included the SNES original on the disc. However, this was used only for retrieving sprite graphics. This was demonstrated by the fact that, back before Square announced that they were going to release the re-issues in English speaking parts of the world, many rom-hackers tried inserting English-translated snes roms into the disc image. This resulted in nothing noticably different occuring. All text was still in Japanese.

Simply put, at 2 megabytes, the PS1 didn't have enough RAM to successfully emulate the SNES. True, the SNES didn't have all that much RAM itself, but the contents of the cartridges themselves were locations in memory. Final Fantasy III and Chrono Trigger both exceed this limitation.

And no, you couldn't stream the data. Not without putting your framerate in the toilet.

With the exception of Megaman 7, all these titles were released on the PS1 in Japan. In fact, on each of the Rockman remakes for the PS1, Capcom included little Pocketstation games.

If, as another poster mused, this collection is emulated, that means an interesting step in emulation for the PS2: SNES emulation has been slow and glitchy in most cases, and it would be nice to see it done accurately. It would be even nicer to see, one week later, someone rip the emulation code out and make a standalone emulator.

El Grade, an easy to learn game which ostensibly centers around players vying for political dominance in 16th centruy Spain. This one will be coming back in print later this year, supposedly, but most gaming stores still have or can get it. While you're at it, get the Expansions, although King and Intrigue is the only one you'll be using with any regularity. Cost hovers around $45 retail.

Babel is an out of print gem from Uwe Rosenburg, creator of the popular Bohnanza series. The game is in Kosmos's Spiele für zwei (Games for two) series. In this game, players command groups of middle-Eastern peoples trying to build towers, but the beauty of the game lies in the simplicity of the design and the strategic possibilities. Cost is about $22.00 retail.

El Caballero is the brain-burning sequel to El Grande, but shares very little gameplay-wise. The idea in this game is that players now control groups of explorers who are trying to claim land masses in the "New World." This game resembles the already mentioned Carcassonne in some superficial ways, but it is to Carcassonne what Axis and Allies is to Risk. Cost is usually $20.00 retail.

What's more, it becomes clear upon reading any significant amount of literature relating to the group (be it for or against) that the leader, Li Hongzhi is either a habitual user of some really trippy drugs, a charlatan, or about as sane as a sackful of wet squirrels.

However, the level of reaction on the Chinese government's part is foaming-at-the-mouth barbaric. The best way to keep people from revolting is to not let them know they're being opressed, and the Chinese government seems to be going out of their way to let the people know "We're doing this to demoralize you."

It's difficult to directly infer meaning from this section, owing to the lack of quotation marks in the language. The excluded section (your "...") is verse 16, which reads:

"Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the council of Balaam, to commit trespass against the Lord in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the Lord." (KJV, pronounciation symbols omitted)

Without a graduate course on what role the council of Balaam had in these matters, or who Peor was and how it related to the issue at hand, this seems a little disjoint. At any rate, including verse 16 makes the speaker of 17-18 unclear.

Even if Moses is the speaker in this instance, Moses is not the Lord, and as is demonstrated in Numbers 20:8-11, is quite capable of misinterpreting or falling outside the will of God.

  22. Re:Yahweh has no room to criticize violence on On Religious Violence And Videogame Violence · · Score: 1

Genesis 19:8 - The speaker in question is Lot, not God. In this situation, he is reacting as a citizen of Sodom would be likely to do. There is no pretense that he is performing a noble act by offering his daughters to the people of Sodom.

Judges 5:30 - It is not clear whether the speaker is Sisera's mother or her "wise ladies," but it is clear that the phrase is pure speculation, and does not demonstrate a general approval of rape.

Judges 19:25 - Like the instance of Lot offering his daughter, this is merely a reflection of the normal behavior at the time. It is not depicted as noble, and was not done at the command of God.

2 Samuel (12:11 for those who were wondering) - The speaker here is not directly God, but Nathan speaking to David regarding his (David's) injustice, having indirectly killed Uriah to marry his wife, Bathsheba. Whether Nathan is taking liberties with his communication with the Lord is debatable, as is the literal or figurative nature of the warning. It could just as easily mean, "I will take all that you hold dear, and ensure that you will never have it again."

At any rate, the issue at hand was whether God commanded/approved rape in some circumstances, not whether rape occurs in the Bible.

For those who may not have run across the concept before, the basic concept is this: For any soundwave, there is an inverse soundwave. This inverse sounds identical by itself, but when played at the same time as the original, the result is silence.

At any rate, there's probably a terribly good reason I've not heard about this concept being applied to PC-muffling, and if so, I'd love to hear it.
