It wasn't that long ago that Walmart's out-the-door price for a complete desktop PC was $199. Complete with O/S.
They raised the price to $299 (adding $100 of additional profit) when they realized that they simply couldn't keep them on the shelves at the lower price.
The point is, the MS box is a complete cookie-cutter operation. Certainly they can be profitably built and sold for far less than the boxes that Walmart was selling.
Considering what one's buying, I think the price points are about $100 too high. Not that I'll be buying either one, but I think that the prices should be closer to:
Weapons in space is inevitable. Looking at militiary history, it's also logical.
100 years ago wars were fought as ground wars.
When planes first appeared in warfare, they were used simply for data gathering -- They would fly over the enemy position and the pilot would report his observations.
The military soon realized that if they could knock out their enemy's use of aerial surveylance they would realize a huge tactical advantage and Air combat was born.
The same thing holds true with satellites. The launch of the first communcations / spy satellite ensured that one day someone would develop the ability to neutralize enemy satellites.
Just wait until you can buy silence in the convenient "personalized" packs. Shipped 144 to case, a single Paypal entry can by all the gross silence that you want!
I can see the labelling now. "This end up. Do not drop or you'll break the silence!"
Foreman: "What's going on in here?" Janitor: "I dropped that box over there and spilt silence all over the place..."

The initial cost is listed as $4/unit and the reported output is "3 to 4 watts".
Adding 2 and 2, a kilowatt can be produced for about $1,000.
Competition will undoubtedly result in improvements in both yield and cost. Get the MTBF down to something reasonable and this might be good for more than just phones.

Officer -- The pornographic images that you found on my computer got there because someone broke into this guy's flat, took their clothes off, and started acting in a lewd manner. The computer captured this on the webcam and mailed the pictures to me.
Yeah -- Everyone knows that Linda Carter is the only "real" female superhero.
And just what, pray tell, does the inventor of the godawful "Microsoft Blue" know about color?
sigh......
Interesting parallel. Both claim to be offerring some kind of meat, but neither one really claims to offer food.

How do you get all of the bacteria to crap in a straight line?
:)
I mean, all it takes is one of the little buggers to go off in a random direction and it'll short the whole damned circuit.
Unless, of course, we can engineer another strain of bacteria that eat the metal wire and excrete insulated wire.

We don't have to like it, but it is inevitable.
I have notice a significant reduction in SPAM. Perhaps we should leave things alone?

So the bottom line is experience? Then the following holds:
Bad Code + Bad Code + Bad Code = Good Code!
Yeah, right.

Maybe Verizon will install it as the default ringer so that we don't have to the non-stop onslaught of cell phones "singing" in public.
:)
Well... It COULD work.

Honest, Officer. That's just the way it happened!
I wonder how CDC would have fared had the chosen a 72-bit word instead of 60? (Allowing both 6 and 8 bit characters to evenly fill a word.)

You want serious trouble? Just let one of those fallings shards hit a spotted owl and watch the fan get all messed up!!!
