Every fan dub I've ever seen is a parody. Most hardcore fans prefer subtitles anyway, so going to the massive extra effort to dub something seems kinda weird. It's not impossible for someone to create a serious fan dub, but I can't imagine trying to find good voice actors that will work for free with a bunch of nerds. At least with fansubs it doesn't matter if you have a nasally voice.

Parodies on the other hand have a lot more latitude in what they can do and the dub route is certainly an option.

From the point of view of the cell phone companies, you just designed the worst phone ever. No connector conspiracy? What are you thinking? Loading (possibly pirated) music from the computer without paying $2 for each one? Prepostrous! No DRM? What, do you want to be sued?

Sure it would be a great phone, but no service provider would carry it because they are far more interested in new ways to pull money out of your wallet than installing features you're actually asking for.

On the other hand, the ROKR is somewhat close to what you asked for. It syncs over USB (but has a custom connector of course) and uses an almost standard headphone jack (there's even an adapter that comes with the phone to let you use a normal one). It has good long playtime and technically the songs are stored on a memory card (a compact SD card). Of course there is the retarded 100 song limit (100 songs pretty much fill a 512MB compact SD card though). Even that took a full power Reality Distortion Field to bring to light, I wouldn't count on finding something like you actually want anytime soon.

I thought the USB ports on TiVos were only USB 1.1? G support is kinda moot (except for keeping your network out of mixed mode) when you're limited to USB speeds.

Yes, I have used TiVo2Go several times in the past and the transfer times are seriously painful. You basically have to plan a day in advance if you want to load shows on something. Still, it works pretty nicely after that and the quality is pretty good.

The crux of the matter is that TiVo2Go gave people something they've been wanting for a long time: An easy way to get a particular show they want (and this decision is made AFTER the show has been watched one in many cases) onto their PC where they can burn it to a DVD or send it to a friend. While it's been possible to capture data from the TV for a long time, few people wanted to go to the trouble to get a $50 Tuner card and haul their computer down to the living room just to transfer a single show once every 4 months or so. TiVos solution is close to exactly what people wanted (the extra step of ripping off the DRM is annoying though).

The catch is that a large number of users will be in violation of their ISP's TOS if they subscribe to this service. Peer to Peer programs almost always run afoul of the "no servers" rule that nearly every ISP puts in the TOS for their "home" packages. In some TOSes they can terminate your account (with no refund) for simply responding to a ping.

Of course almost no ISPs enforce their TOS agreements, but they are legally binding and you are in violation of contract when you do stuff like this.

My wife tells me that playing music appears to have almost no impact on battery life though, even if you're using it like a mini boombox instead of having the headphones plugged in. The battery is dead after a day or two, regardless of how much music you play. she often leaves it on and playing for 8 hours each day at work. It actually has better battery life than my old 3G iPod she used to use when you leave it on constantly.

That's why I think there must be a firmware bug (some process is spinning the CPU 100% of the time) that will probably be fixed later and give it the advertised battery life.
