"How much easier or logical can it get?"

Those steps are neither easy nor logical. You're giving wayyyyyyyyyyy too much credit to the average computer user. Most people will not even make the assumption that they have a choice in disabling any of that stuff. It scares the hell out to me to see the amazement of friends and co-workers when I show them how to do things that the average Slashdot reader takes for granted as easy.

The easiest and most logical thing that can be done is NOTHING WHATSOEVER. Most people seem to forget that "do nothing" should always be the first option. If you're putting a music CD in your CDROM drive to listen to music, you'll know that you need to launch your music player.

Consoles should be about one-stop shopping and ease of use. Xbox Live lets you create just one online gaming account, versus one for each online game you own. The autocomplete feature is a *very dangerous* thing to have turned on in Excel by default. Unfortunately, no one knows about it until it bites him in the ass. Now and then we'll have to enter a list of ticker symbols into a column in Excel. If the next ticker symbol is similar to the previous one, autocomplete will automatically fill in the last ticker symbol. If you're working at a brisk pace, it is very easy to notice this error. The end result is that you can get a screwed up portfolio statement because Excel fscked up your tickers.

  19. Re:PS3? No thanks, Sony; you screwed the pooch on Bad Day To Be Sony · · Score: 1

The problem is that the music division is crippling the hardware division for no legitimate reason and is not becoming more valuable as a result. In other words, if the music division managed to get the hardware division to completely castrate a new Playstation model, they will still release the same mediocre music and harm their own bottom line.

  20. Re:PS3? No thanks, Sony; you screwed the pooch on Bad Day To Be Sony · · Score: 4, Interesting

Let's look at this from the stockholder's point of view, as well as the customer's. If that type of conflict of interest exists between Sony's divisions, then that is telling me that management is *not* maximising shareholder value because the music division is harming the Playstation division by reducing the utility of the Playstation console.

That tells me that the only way to increase shareholder value is to break Sony into at least two companies: the entertainment division and the electronics division. Each division will then float on its own merits without impeding the other.

In a nutshell, we can add Sony's own *shareholders* to the list of people that are getting screwed by the management. My prediction? Look for a shareholder suit against the Board of Directors within 3 years to break Sony into two companies.
