If you have a leader who comes from a financial background, they will tend to lead in that direction. If you have a engineering background you will tend to lead that direction. It's what each knows and you shouldn't blame them. They are who they are, but is this the direction for your technology company?
Intel used to be lead by former engineers or minds of that leaning. They would be wise to get back there.
This should scare people. Don't they realize we are ASKING businesses/governments to make judgement calls of what is fake news? Translation: People are asking these entities to censor what they feel is fake news.
This seems like a dangerous idea to me. Heavens know a business will not call something it doesn't like to be fake news. Nor would a government who doesn't agree with certain ideas would call something fake news.
Wow those poor people who can't change at all. Who will take care of them? Who will coddle them? Someone needs to help them?
Yup, only one person who can help a "displaced" worker..... the displaced worker. Help yourself.
Go get retrained? Sure, but the real mistake was made well before the person was automated out of a job. It's your life, and you alone are own your career. You should be "reading the tea leaves". Is my job at risk? How about making yourself better. Educating yourself, while you have a job. Don't start after you lose your job.
By the way, this has been happening forever. Does anyone still do a job that was performed 50 years ago, and in the same manner? Life is change. Don't be the problem by complaining, challenge yourself by finding a solution.
Ok, still trying to understand. What law did they break. I'm by no means trying justifying what they did, but trying to have a conversation. Again, not easy by how politically charged this topic is. Just look at a couple of responses to my post.
I read your posting and it says "Cambridge Analytica had harvested the personal data of millions of people's Facebook profiles without their consent and used it for political purpose" Is this illegal? They followed the rules that Facebook allowed and exploited it to the nth degree, and turn massive data into usable data. Anyone could have done this, and most likely were doing it. Who knows, they could still be doing it.
To me, it showed more of how personal data should be protected and setting laws to do this. Apparently, (sarcasm thick here) a company like Facebook doesn't do the best job of protecting personal data, and like to make a profit alot more.
I've followed this story for a long time. As far as I have read, wasn't all the data they mined from Facebook ok per Facebooks data sharing? There wasn't anything illegal. Is Cambridge Analytica just the canary in the mine? Isn't there other who did the same thing, maybe even now?
Personally, it seems this topic is very politically charged and it's hard to see what the technological issue was, or maybe still is?
Wow, you have got to be kidding me! Canada? Yup, they have it right. Just like my friends Grandma who was told by the very same Canadian health care system: Yes you have cancer, but according to the Canadian government you're too old to start treatments. Here is a bunch of pain pills. Please go home and die, and that is just what she did.
Oh it's the evil insurance companies... wait it's the evil doctors making all the money, uh it's the evil.... Government. In Canada the one stop shop for your medical needs. Can't blame anyone else.
Yes this is a true story. You should see my friend deliver it. You would be a bit bitter too if this is how your Grandma was treated.
Yup I agree, there's a large and growing segment of people who believe the US is evil. The same ones that have always thought the US was evil. They're just getting it on and having more babies than the rest of us.
Please respond back explaining why you think the US having it's "downfall" would be the best thing to happen. Sounds like you had more to say, I mean this large and growing segment had more to say...
Ok. I live in Washington and I've watched the city of Seattle crap on itself (no really) over the years till they have the problems they've created. But what the heck is two CITY council members flying across the country on the cities dime doing in New York? YOU'RE A CITY COUNCIL MEMEBER! THAT'S IT! Try working on your own disaster of a city you've created (not Amazon or Microsoft or anyone else) and here is a clue: USE THE PHONE TO GIVE NEW YORK YOUR OPINION! Save the tax payer money instead of taking a New York vacation.
Maybe there actually scared because Seattle is only a couple pony town (Boeing, Microsoft, Amazon) and if they push Amazon will be out all that tax money people spend...... Naw, they're not that smart.
New York, feel free and absorb Amazon HQ2 and start sucking jobs from Seattle. It won't be hard when the Seattle city council thinks you're the causes of all the problems in Seattle. Wait, isn't the city council supposed to keep the city working right? Right.
So, one guy on posts on a forum a certain API is being blocked by his Firefox extension CanvasBlocker. Not that the one individual has anything showing some tracking and data gathering, he just sees an API being used. Without any real evidence what so ever. Sounds like someone wants to sow seeds of mistrust at DuckDuckGo.
This sounds great, but you're still going to have the bones. No one month process will decompose bone material. So, does someone fish out the bones from the nice warm and I bet great smelling compost? Or do we just sift out the dirt and count out the skulls and rib cages? Do you still have to cremate the bones?
I just can't imagine what it would be like to work at a place like this. It would take a special someone.
Tell me, do you willingly pay more in taxes then you need to? Do you use every deduction you can to AVOID taxes. Use every write off? Give extra money at the end of the year to maximize the amount of money you keep?
Now tell me, you own Google stock and hear they are not using their own financial/tax/lawyers people to maximize profits. There would be a stock holder uprising. Why are we giving away money freely when we could do more to save it. And don't forget, most of us own this stock through a 401K or retirement account. Google is in a portfolio somewhere.
Oh us who are in the right, strike down the company that tries to earn the most they can, but don't take money from me. It's my money.
Only written by someone who knows nothing about Seattle transit. What kind of misleading comment is "Seattle has won accolades for its transit system, where 93 percent of riders report being happy with service" Right all few thousand of them? At the same time, I5 through downtown Seattle has the same chock point it's had for the last 40+ years. Brilliant idea to build a convention center over the freeway, so nothing can be upgraded. The wonderful light rail system is waaaay over budget and cost by far more per mile than any other city. It's just starting to be useful by connecting to SeaTac, but at what is a huge cost. Buses? Stuck on the same roads with the cars. Only nice thing about the bus is someone else has to deal with the traffic. And to top it all off, the Alaska Way viaduct (3 lanes) will be shutting down to be replaced with a new tunnel (2 lanes) with out on and off ramps in the middle.
Seattle and transportation should only be referenced if they would like to point out what is wrong and how not to do it. I'm sure the vast majority of commuters who try and use the roads would give a slightly lower approval with service. Of course, those evil gas burning cars are what pays for all the mass transit in Seattle.
Please Note: I'm not against trains and such. I used the bus and MAX train system in Portland and it worked great. I just get pissed when someone writes misleading stories to make it sound like the "West Coast" really knows what they're doing with mass transit. At least the Seattle part doesn't have a clue, they just know how to spend alot of money.
Survey 1000 people over the phone, in 1 week. That's what this article is all about. Yup, all of America is based off of this data. 1000 people.
Everyone has their opinion and leanings. I know, lets show how evil CEOs are, or anyone who make more than you. See those bad people making all this money? Tell me if you could make the same money, would you? Or would you turn down the job or take a pay cut saying you don't deserve it?
Did I get a raise last year? Yes, 2%. Is this enough to cover inflation, no. Am I complaining, NO. If I need to get a new job to pay more I will. It even says in the article changing jobs is how to get a raise. Seems like bad business since you will have to retrain someone new, but there you go.
This is called "balance". President Obama leaned way to the eco side and made rules known to drive industry in a direction. The idea is good, which is better fuel economy, but how it is written would make a number of vehicles unable to be made. There is only so much energy you can pull our of gas. President Trump disagrees with how this should be and is changing it.
Why do people think it's so horrible. My opinion is the goal set by President Obama were unrealistic and with no avenue to get there, which I also thought was done on purpose. Just the same as his coal power plant requirements, which would have just shut them all down. Ok, good get rid of coal, that'a a good thing, so what is your solid plan to replace them and future growth? Ah, right. Chant Solar, Wind really loud and power will fall from the sky. In other words, no plan. This is the same. That vehicle has to get super great fuel economy. How do we get there? Make non ICE cars, without a plan for infrastructure and how this will cripple the power grid if rolled out without expanding capacity. Oh well.
There great part is everyone can have an opinion, but I would just like to see a plan. Don't care which president we're talking about.
Please don't put your perspective (As an American, you should be offended...) on us all. Please keep an open mind and don't tell other what to do. Feel free and express your opinion, and give reasons why you feel that way. You never know you might change someones mind. What you've done is simply galvanize points of view and divide people.
Now, the real topic. Gee, you don't think this hasn't been going on since the beginning of this country? (or any country for that matter, including Canada) What I'm personally tired of is how EVERYTHING President Trump does is WRONG/BAD. I personally don't like how he communicates, I think he's impulsive (good and bad) and is a hard personality to take for very long. But no one gives him credit for what he is good at: negotiating. This is one reason why he was put in the office in the first place. And yes I would want him on my side of the table. From the outside, this looks like a good move in my opinion. Of course I don't know all the details involved.
Of course they are leaving voluntarily. Because if they don't meet their number of 10400 people voluntarily, it will change to involuntarily. This is a common big company buyout of employees. The company will emphasise the first offer will be the best and if they don't hit there number there will be another offer but not nearly as good. So as an employee you have to ask yourself if you're in danger or not, and is it worth the money or not.
Either way, Verizon will make their number, and if they get a few extra then bonuses to execs all around!
I can only give the perspective I've observed, but here goes.
I watched H1Bs hired inside of a fortune 500 company. They came in large groups when they were hired. At the time, they did nothing to lower wages for non H1Bs, but they did take a number of jobs from the local economy. After a number of years you could see wages being depressed, but it was never observed. Also, the salary for H1Bs was lower. Company loved this.
Another observation: When cuts came they were the first to go. Quick and fast. Not good for the H1Bs.
I challenge your statement asking if wages are depressed, but in the next sentence say every study done on this matter found they raised wages. If there are studies, which are not sited here, you're saying H1Bs raise pay over all? How? Again, where is your studies?
BTW, if I see a doctor, I better be paying for their education.
Well, congratulations Ford. Well, you've assured I will not purchase a car from you. What a stupid negative marketing move. Gee, who will want to finance through you from now on. Especially since this is one of your big money makers.
Tax exemptions are NOT almost always a bad thing. In fact they are a tool, unfortunately a tool in the hand of government. Lets face it, the people in government are not the sharpest tools in the shed. So they make bad deals. Try this: Before you offer tax exemptions to someone run simulations for the life of the exemptions and see if you can afford it. Did Seattle try this?
And yes I'm a native Washingtonian. I've stumped the Amazon streets. You should know it's illegal according to our state constitution to have an income tax, so the politician knew about this. Also, why would you want capital gains tax on stocks? You want your 401K to be taxed for gains, or your pension? Almost everything would be impacted by a capital gains tax.
Of course you missed the one source of income. Oh, right 40,000, each making over 6 figures running around Seattle spending money on goods which have one of the highest sales tax in the country. (~10.1%)
I'm saying I totally disagree with your points, I just think our leadership has for so long not thought of our tax dollars like a business does. Run the numbers. Does this tax break offset the full cost, and what does the city/county/state get in return? Hope the new "HQs" are running these numbers. Let the dumb ones over bid. It's like in sports with the new free agent. You usually regret it as the contract goes on.
Seattle has helped this move forward. If the local government feels they can push around a large company in on geographical area, they will. With 50k workers in the Seattle area, they are stuck with working with the ever expanding demands of the local government. To level the playing field open multiple "headquarters" in other states and play them against each other.
Ask Seattle how well that worked with Boeing. Oh ya, HQ moved to Chicago. So if the government gets too over the top, they can shift employees to the other headquarters.
"Meanwhile, what if you took 98 *billion* dollars and used that money all to improve the electrical power grid in India."
Simply put, why is it Germany's problem to fix India's power grid?
Yes you are correct, the Paris accord was nothing more than a money grab from rich counties to poor countries, with no real return on the investment.
Oh, I'm sure the answer it the same to both: We're saving the planet for all of us!! Glory be and shoot fire!
If Germany wants to do this in Germany, then so be it. Last time I checked, India (poorer country) can do what they want to their country.
Seems a bit harsh, and yup.
Who determines what is "fake news"?
This should scare people. Don't they realize we are ASKING businesses/governments to make judgement calls of what is fake news? Translation: People are asking these entities to censor what they feel is fake news.
This seems like a dangerous idea to me. Heavens know a business will not call something it doesn't like to be fake news. Nor would a government who doesn't agree with certain ideas would call something fake news.
and the "duh duh duh dun" sound
That would be bong, as in the Bong Song. Really, it's called the bong song. Coming from an ex Intel employee.
Wow those poor people who can't change at all. Who will take care of them? Who will coddle them? Someone needs to help them?
Yup, only one person who can help a "displaced" worker..... the displaced worker. Help yourself.

This doesn't belong on /. Go find a eco website to talk about this on.
