you're missing one crucial point: theres alternatives, you dont HAVE to use it, but its there for the peeple who might want to. live and let live, my friend.
i personaly think its a great idea for people who want linux for its stability, but not have a gui thats so diferent as to make a seasoned user feel like a newbie.
see in the real world, alot of real people cant afford to change their case, motherboard and ram everytime a chip maker decides to change their architecture. intel especially pissed me off when they switched from slot to socket right in the middle if the p3 series.
Basicly intel has rubbed me the wrong way everytime they changed architecture, which is the whole reason i went to AMD, they had a track record of offering higher clockspeeds in form that quite a few people were "stuck" in. i really liked the idea of upgrading with only having to buy a new chip instead of forking over 3-4 times as much for the whole new kit..
i mean their choice, beat the dead horse, or keep jumping horses every year or so and leave a good chunk of their customers in the dust. i would certainly like to see them pursue both avenues, a faster 400fsb chip, while still supporting their current architecture.
But (more seriously), doesn't is just scare the hooey out of you that brute force password cracking is now running around as an autonamous virus on the Net???"
just a little... will it come to the point where people will have to be warned about having passwords less than 12 characters long and not having a minimum of 4 numerals and punctuation characters?
if i were to dedicate 16 hours a day to trying each game, one hour per game.. divide by 365 days a year, it would take me nearly 5 and a half years just to *sample* all those games, not to mention time-outs to eat, pee (work maybe) or if i find a game i like and spend more than an hour with....
where would i find the time to *buy* any games from them?
if you actually read it, you'll see the site who is being slashdotted is www.ferrago.co.uk, which looks to be a game review site completely unaffiliated to Infinium Labs..
well if you apply the RIAA algorithm, taking into acount game X is 3 times more fun than game Y, or game Y offers 5 times more play time over game Z, you can easily reach your target of games with minimal effort.
it leaves them nowhere, even IF the bill is passed its not legal to attack innocent people in the name of protecting yourself. if they are alowed to invade my privacy and hack my computer in their quest to protect their company from piracy, regardles if im sharing copyrighted material or not, then im allowed to go shooting people who might pose a threat to me because the law says im allowed to kill someone in defense of my life. so anyone who might be engaging in any activity that could POSSIBLY be used to threaten my life is now a legal target?

ugh, i wrote a huge reply to this and then asked myself why the hell am i wasting my time? this is getting old. the masked issues are basically some people want linux to be open, popular, used by as many people as possible, and the other side, theres those who take pride in understanding linux, wanting it to be like a kind of members only club, only the elite can work it, and are afraid of their "skillz" being less impressive or unique when more and more people learn how to use linux. period.
its thinking and policies liek that that keep the fat/smart peopel out there crackign the software and hacking the computers, and the not-so-skilled-but-really-fit law enforcement guys playing catchup always 3 steps behind..
now the day he gets that thing to make a sound to repel the RIAA, can someone record an mp3 of it for me to download off of morpheus? i'll play it through my stereo at home and my car deck while i drive around, i promise
for all those out there who think its ok for sony to dictate what you can legaly do to your ps2 nce you bought it should take a moment and think if this is ok, then its ok for MS to tell you what and who's software you're allowed to run on your windows machine, or intel to say what you can install on your pc?
exactly.. when i first saw the headline, i thougth how easy it could be for this guy to contest the charges, and set a precident, but if the idiot was selling pirated software at the same time... he deserves something even harsher.
its a touchy subject... say if i as a canadian made a painting that offended all canadians and was of content that was against canadian law, could canadian authorities then break into the U.S. museum where i had placed it in order to deface/destroy it?
i know a webpage isnt a painting, but in most ways it can be an expression of someone's feelings and thus be art in a way.

cmon, made in china... and the price the cpu should go for, one could easily get an 8 chip system for less than the price of an athelon xp
and in another article dvorak critisizes Dell for immitating compaq by designing computers with the same interfaces (monitor, mouse, keyboard)
now lets give everyone working guns so we can force smeone to come out with a fix for this exploit
