Too true. The problems with the IWF is the lack of oversight. I wrote to my MP, who replied it was nothing to do with them, as they are a seperate organization, and wrote to my ISP, who said they have nothing to do with the "blacklist" itself.

The IWF seem to occupy this quasi public / private space in which the only way to get to them is via public opinion.

  4. Death of the author on Braid, Games As Art, and Interpretation · · Score: 1

I think Barthes's Death of the author pretty much destroys the idea of cannon at all - so the question "is it art?" is irrelevant. It both is, and is not art, at the same time. It's how you choose to interprit it that's important.

The author of the article here uses Barthes, but then ignores him, becuase Blow's voice is too omnipresent. He wants to deconstruct the game to find his meaning, but is distracted by trying to find the difference between the character's voice and Blow's voice - both in the game and online.

There is no One True Meaning - you can only pull each thread of narrative as you find them attractive and see where it leads, using your own experiences to make connections with other works of art, or other moments in your existence.

The moment anything is created, the author loses control over it - they cannot choose how anyone will interprit anything, as they are different from you.

Web developers should care about this browser - how your pages look on it, what CSS version (or subset) it supports. Security experts should care about this browser - what security issues does it throw up, what 'helpful' workarounds does it impliment for Phishing and the like.

I'm sorry, and you may not like, but this browser will be the standard.

This is something else to be looked at and might well be a good approach. Of course, in reality, the best thing to do is to cherry pick parts of methodologies you like and that work for you. I've yet ot see a fully agile approach be successful however (in an "on time on budget fully featured sort os definition). Of course, YMMV.

The pricing is now interesting, as one interpritation could be that Sony over-sold the fact that PS3 was going to require you to work overtime to afford so that Microsoft would debut the Xbox360 at a high price point. I take your point, but sometimes you know there is a certain fun in looking for hidden meanings in any art form. These patterns and arguments don't even have to be conciously put their by the author - since you bring your own experiences to any art you appreciate, you automatically become a part of it, and re-interprit it in your own way. You might make a connection with some other art, or some other aspect of your life, spot of pattern and want to tell people about it because it's like, "woah" :)

  17. Its all about control on Gaiman and Whedon Discuss the Rise of the Geek · · Score: 5, Interesting

What's awesome about these two movies is that the talents behind them (and I include Dave McKean here) had complete control of the movies. The scripts, the direction, the marketing - everything. And guess what, it works. They follow through on their vision, no compromise for execs who don't get it, and produce something faithful to what they want.

And they produce excellent movies. Thought-provoking, entertaining, well directed, beautifully shot movies (without any 6 figure salaries).

I was luck to see both Mirrormask and Serenity at the Edinburgh Film Festival this year and both were amazing films for completely different reasons. I realise some random comment on /. isn't going to make anyone pay 5 bucks for a movie ticket, but if Mirrormask is on near you, go see it.
If you haven't seen Firefly, and Serenity is playing near you, go see it.
