    20,000 years ago glaciers 1 or 2 miles thick used to cover places like Chicago and Toronto. There were maybe 1 *MILLION* human beings on the planet, and CO2 was half its present level. Notwithstanding that, the large glaciers mostly disappeared, temperatures went up 8 degrees C, and sea levels went up over 100 metres. That was *NOT* due to billions of people running around in CO2-spewing SUVs.

    Fast forward to today. Alarmists are freaking out over the disappearance of a couple of metres of polar sea ice, and a temperature rise of 1 or 2 degrees, and a sea-level rise of a few centimetres in the next century. They aren't really freaking out. It's just a flimsy excuse by the lib-left for bigger government.

    I know this is Slashdot, but please RTFA. Microsoft *DELIBERATELY* *WENT* *OUT* *OF* *THEIR* *WAY* to add UA-parsing code which then slowed down non-MS users. They actually expended additional effort to sabotage non-MS users.

    Microsoft *PROMISED* extended support for Windows 7 to January 2020 https://support.microsoft.com/... I suppose they can weasel their way out of calling it an outright lie, but people expected January 2020 to mean January 2020.

    For QEMU on linux, typing the command...

    qemu-system-x86_64 -cpu help

    gives the following list. It has been my experience that you can be certain that a previous version CPU, which is a subset of your physical CPU, will work. However, I haven't always been able to get higher-level-than-my-physical-CPU emulated. There is also the "-cpu=host" option, which simply passes through the host machine's CPU to the VM.

    EDIT: Sorry, this isn't quite what the output actually looks like, but I had to do some editing to get past Slashdot's "Lame Filter".

    Put it this way... you're 44. You and your wife have well-paying jobs and are raising a son. Then both of you become unemployable. Now imagine two adults living the rest of their lives, plus putting a kid through college on a $73,500 one-time payout. I don't think so.

  18. I remember work. (I'm retired now). Windows 98 SE was the best. It flew in 32 megs of RAM, and it worked just fine. The only problem was when a machine died and I inherited a machine that had been used by a co-op student. I knew how to get rid if standard stuff like RealPlayer, etc. But there was so much crap (toolbars, email emoticons, etc) installed by the student that I gave up and asked IT to blow away the OS, and give me a fresh install. After that it ran fine again.
