Microsoft already were declared a monopoly in their country of origin.
AFAIUI, Israel has been unimpressed with MS for some time. The fact that their software doesn't support Hebrew merely brought it to the Antitrust Authoritys attention, causing them to cry "Enough!"
The last straw, if you like.
There's plenty of other examples in industry of some two-bit outfit employing unethical (and often illegal) tactics to maintain their position in the marketplace.
The difference is that most of them are smart enough not to attract attention to themselves. So nobody really cares.
Had a Coke lately? Are those Nike shoes you're wearing?
Around here, nobody uses IE (okay, I think it's got around 3% browser market share).
The alternatives are just so much better.
Of course, none of them come pre-installed on windows systems, but that's hardly a problem as I put one of them on as soon as the machine is switched on. It's not a problem for linux machines, of course.
Mine does. There's no wraparound thingy: the words "scroll lock" are printed on the key underneath the "F14" string. There's even a scroll lock light. I'm looking at it now, honest! And it's ADB.
Okay, so it's not the one I'm currently typing with (macs are not for me), but a decomissioned one (one of a whole suite that my work used to own).
Rest assured: If Microsoft did somehow find a cure for cancer, it would not be distributed to those who most needed it, but to those who could afford it.
That's great! I guess I was only thinking of nVidia and Radeon-based cards. I hadn't considered Matrox before, I think I need to investigate the driver status further...
Does anyone know why he still includes games which require openGL acceleration (eg Chromium), when Knoppix doesn't come with any hardware-accelerated drivers (that I know of)?
It seems to me that it will just result in thousands of introductions like this: "Hey cool, a 3D game! (click) (0.5 fps game menu displays) Wait, this is crap, Linux sucks!"
All well and good, but...

Does anyone know what became of those guys who were trying to specially treat tungsten (into a lattice, as I recall it) to force it to radiate mainly in the visible spectrum (as opposed to todays tungsten bulbs, which radiate mostly in the infra-red)?
The idea, IIRC, was that the bulbs would operate much more efficiently, as the energy they would otherwise be radiating as heat would go into generating light.
Could give traditional light bulbs a new lease on life.
'Tis but another reason to move completely away from Microsoft.
Bring on Jabber, I say.
If going fully MS-free isn't practical (I know for some unfortunate souls that to be true), your friends and relatives can be shown how even under windows, it is possible to drasticly reduce your dependence on them just by changing the applications you use (or in this case, networks you subscribe to).

95 crushed OS/2 Warp, and Longhorn will crush whatever other OS crawls into its space while MS is developing it.
Isn't that what they said about Windows XP?
I hope they'll put this technology in the next model Zaurus.
C'mon, it'll be like 3D penguins!
The object /cm/cs/who/dmr/otherunix.html does not exist on this server.
I don't get it.
SVG is a new way to render without pixels, it requires less ram...
Only for sufficently large pictures with little complexity.
For complex 32x32 icons, such as the Mozilla dinosaur head, I doubt an SVG would yield a smaller memory footprint than a rasterised one.
Don't get me wrong, I think SVG is a great and necessary step, but I wouldn't tout its memory usage as a benefit.
I just discovered an excellent little app called Kalzium in my RH9 distro, and what do I see featured on /. ?
It currently lists element 110 as Ununnilium.

I would add WinGIMP (with relevant gtk+ library) for gfx work, and Celestia for, well, for fun.
Not unless the music department needed someone to do some decomposing.

For example, una says the Macintosh extended keyboards have a scroll lock key. It does not.
Yes it does. It shares the same keycap as F14.
It's just as well I haven't seen a PC with a phoenix BIOS im months.
I'll continue buying Award and AMI, thanks.

.. and still their stock price is climbing higher than ever before.

If only that were so...
Certainly, they do last a lot longer than incandescants, but I'm not so sure about that tens of thousands of hours claim.
I had my first one fail last night, after five years of use (roughly 7,500 hours use, with roughly 1800 power cycles in that time).
Still not bad, since the box said only 3 years MTBF.
