    because when i go to an eye doctor, i am paying to be told what perscription i need to correct my vision.

    when (ha, if ever) i go to msn.com i'm not paying for anything. it's a free service supplied by microsoft. no express warranties, etc.

    (one totally unrelated comment, why did you use "you" once in your comment while the rest of the time you used that ever-annoying "u"? consistency, my friend. consistency.)

    Now that I can see that there are some lights on at Slackware...

    When did the lights go out? userlocal.com is a fine site, but it has no "official" connection with Slackware as far as I can tell. http://www.slackware.com is the place to find Slackware.

    And don't just look at the front page for updates! Patrick doesn't brag about his work on the front page, but you can get an idea about what he's doing by looking at the Changelog.

    Uh... Who is this "them" of whom you speak? There is only Patrick V., and rumor has it that he doesn't want your help. :-)

    Perhaps even our own version of a package download tool (tgz-get?).

    There have been prototypes of something to do this in the past. However, something to automagically download and install packages/updates/patches isn't really a part of the slacker's way. Most slackers want more control than that, and ftp and installpkg/upgradepkg are sufficient for the majority. The rest have probably already written their own scripts. :-)

    Considering the number of times I've been almost seriously injured by people using blades, scooters, mopeds, and bicycles on sidewalks, I'm quite happy to not have Segways allowed.

    I don't trust people to not be stupid with them, and I see no reason to risk public safety before proving that people are stupid and can't use Segways responsibly.

    what exactly do you mean by "rogue neutrinos"?

    neutrinos are "little neutral things". they can travel through cubic light-years of *lead* before the probability of an interaction becomes close to one.

    i don't think that you need to worry about the neutrinos.

    (besides, how often have neutrinos wiped out the contents of your regular harddrive? not even i have had that sort of problem)

    i was a little surprised myself that they didn't mention his first name at all. odd, that. i kept re-reading the first few paragraphs to make sure i hadn't missed it.

    this guy is a truly nice guy. a pretty decent professor, too.
    it's good to know that once in a while the good guys do get some attention. :-)

    Um, I think you're misunderstanding the case.

    Microsoft Germany is an ISP in Germany. They host some forums. Someone on the forum put up the images of "Steffi Graff." When asked to, Microsoft Germany removed the images, but they refused to sign a document saying that those images will never appear again.

    Microsoft Germany never posted the images. A user did. What this legal outcome implies is that if *you* were living in Germany and were to post nudie pics on a site hosted by Comcast Germany, Comcast Germany would be responsible for that, not you.

    Unless a "BOWLING BALL" is somehow different from a "bowling ball" (you know, the round ball people typically use for bowling), I'm pretty sure that it's actually a whole bunch of molecules formed into a spheroid.

    But yeah, it's possible to have a very large molecule (in theory), so how big are they talking?

    Why is it that these companies do this? When I say "no, I don't want that" I typically mean it (Unless I'm talking about chocolate cake, thank you). I understand that the Almighty Dollar plays a huge role in this, but isn't changing your privacy policy without notice an underhanded thing to do?

    I thought it was, anyway.

    I've actually arranged my books based on the Library of Congress call numbers. It worked rather nicely. Of course, it was a pain in the butt to do it at first. For some reason, you only ever come up with an idea for organizing something *after* you have too many to deal with quickly.

    I use a bookcase...

    What would be the point of a book database? The databases for DVDs and CDs allow for players on a machine to spit out relevant track/title information. I'm having a hard time coming up with a reason to have a book database.
