Well if anything, it gives us less worries in the event of a catastrophe. Back when the Taiwan earthquake happened, Internet connections here in the Philippines were pretty much useless for a couple of days. It pretty much showed how dependent _I_ am to the internet (I can only speak for myself, but I guess this was a common feeling for most people). It was pretty frustrating to say the least. I don't know about the other countries (Malaysia, Thailand, etc), but we were hit pretty hard back then. I'm pretty much welcome to adding more connections, to say the least. If anything, it might eventually help improve the bandwidth/cost ratio.

You might not appreciate how hard it is to have redundant cable connections until you find yourself in a country with 7,000+ islands, separated from other countries between quite a lot of water.

You could always use white boxes. It doesn't have to be a Dell or an HP. There are some shops here in the Philippines that sell $150 (or so) PCs with the monitor already. These are GHz Athlon XPs and sub-2GHz P4's and the old Durons/Celerons drop to about $100. These aren't second-hand stock (or so they claim), but rather surplus, unsold stock. It's not a bad investment for a school in a third-world country to buy a bunch of those for computer classes (about 40). If a school already has a bunch of working, relatively modern (700MHz++) computers, they don't even need to buy.

I haven't seen XP starter edition yet, but I would guess (from what I've read) that it will run on those systems pretty fine. I don't know if it will stack up to OLPC, but i definitely think it can do what it's supposed to do: help children get educated in computers.

But that can tend to be annoying if you're, say, downloading, compiling, converting, or running some other maintenance stuff that takes quite some time. I tend to be bothered with those at work, and I make a conscious effort not to stand up to make sure that Windows doesn't reboot on its own.

Yes, I'm willing to put up with that, if only because it's gonna be a PITA to start over on whatever I'm doing previously. If there is a way to disable the popup, please tell me.

From there I usually branch out into different sites. I do keep a lot of RSS feeds that mainly get linked from those sites (Truehoop, Deadspin, Wages of wins, Extremetech, etc.). It's really easier and more efficient to just check RSS feeds on most sites.

So from those sites, you can see I'm pretty much a sports fan. I also browse through some Philippine computer retailers' websites to check up on prices if I'm in the hunt for something (like right now, I'm in the hunt for a decent LCD). Dude...

I think I've seen enough ads in my life to have paid for every movie, tv show, and cd I've ever stolen off of bittorent

But the ads aren't there to pay for the tv show, movie etc. They're there to *hopefully* pay for those shows, that people might think of their products when they need buy something. The ads don't pay, but the ads are there to boost sales. So effectively, we still pay for those, it's just that it's been spread over stuff that we always have bought (which in turn we bought because of ads).

I understand if people hate ads (thank god for adblock). I don't understand why people don't know why ads exist. So at least until people come up with new business models to support artists without charging the consumers (that doesn't include piracy), I hope we could at least understand.

That's a good idea except it will only work for computers that do not need to save some sort of state, those such as school labs and the like (where user data is primarily saved in the servers). Enterprise computers are not in that category. For example, setting up email accounts (outlook, thunderbird, etc) would be quite a pain in that regard, unless you use web based email (TWIG, Squirrel, OWA) which will easily eat up storage in no time. User preferences (wallpapers, screensavers, themes, recent docs) will generally be wiped clean every boot. That's nice if you want to work in a boring, authoritative environment, but that's still not for everyone. :) FYI, we used to have them in school, and in the company dorm in Japan, which was mainly used for surfing and email (and a quick dose of brood war every now and then).

Same with bowling, same with baseball and golf (I played baseball before). Changing the mechanics of my motion for a simulation would change those mechanics in an actual game. But bottom line is that people will adapt the same motion that they are used to. So if you really play tennis, you would swing a wii controller the same way you would an actual tennis racket, knowing that changing the way you swing will affect the way you play in real life, whether it's tennis with the boss/wife/friends, the company/neighborhood tournament, or the ATP tour.
