Well, I can see one scenario where TV makes a lot of sense - MTV. They own Guitar Hero. And given that the expansion pack went multi-platinum, and Rock Band is about to ship with oodles of DLC, wouldn't it make sense to have the competition as a big ad for downloadable content? MTV started out as a big ad for music, why not continue that? how about a Guitar Hero reality show - The Ultimate Fighter mixed with American Idol but for guitar hero?
I'd love to watch two guitar hero masters try out songs they've never played before...
I caught an episode about a month ago. The guitar hero battles were really entertaining. For me, it hold the same allure as watching tennis. "holy crap, I can't believe they did that". I think it's harder to see teh expertise of the players in some of the other games though, and consequently it's less engaging. Hopefully, they be reborn as a video podcast of the events..
Here's a link to somene ripping on "Jordan". If you've tried that song, watch in awe...
If they were dealing with a commodity product, and an open free marketplace, yes. They aren't and it's not. Apple is strongarming the media companies over price and DRM for both music and video, and has been for a while. Most likely, on hulu or wherever heroes season 2 pops up, it will be a different pricing model.
What does sony have that's going to compete with Halo 3? (or even Metroid Prime 3? Hell, even Mario Strikers? ) Playstation Home? LittleBigPlanet and Killzone are the only great exclusives I see on the horizon, and both of those aren't shipping until February.
If blu-ray is the only thing going for them, the Paramount/Dreamworks Deal and Halo 3 could end this fight this holiday season. 3rd place with a huge loss on every console sold is a bad place to be.
Sure, but it isn't the only option. And not even an attractive one to me. Speakeasy is much more customer friendly, and FiOS is loads faster. That monopoly may not be all it's cracked up to be, esp if Google starts lighting up dark fiber. My speakeasy DSL is slow as hell since I'm far from the CO, but my AppleTV content still looks great. As long as it's not streaming (ie, not breaking news or sports), customers will not care. Price and Ease of Use matter much more than quality anyway. (see Crappy + Free, ie Youtube). Hell, Cuban has been talking about FedExing hard drives full of HD content around, and only downloading the DRM key.
I agree it's going to be a bloodbath though. But if its Google/Apple vs. Telcos vs. Cuban vs. TW/Comcast, it's not going to be a walk in the park for the cablecos. Look at the leverage Apple has on the music industry...
You'd think that with downloadable TV (appleTV, revision3, democracy, youtube, etc, etc) becoming a real threat, cable companies would actually want to embrace products people love. I have DirecTV and am stuck with the HR20 for HD. It is awful. I'm thinking that 60 bucks a month could go much further on Netflix and iTunes...
It's not like it's going to take a lot to get customers to ditch time warner and/or comcast.... these companies are reviled.
non-scientifitc study: I personally know 4 non-gamers who bought a PS2 as a guitar hero machine. I only know 2 people with a PS3.
take a look at amazon's bestselling video games. PS2 is #16 (and #17 for the black one) and Guitar Hero 80s is #3Guitar Hero 2 bundle is #19. (PS3 is #2 and 360 is #21)
Not to mention DS or Wii games hold 8 of the top 12 games. Casual gamers anyone? the first "gamer's game" is Halo 3 at #13 then RE4 (wii) at #20.
30 rock is amazing. I bought a bunch of 30 rock episodes on itunes and watch the episodes again and again - that's the only time I've ever bought TV except for season 1 of the sopranos on dvd.
so, to keep this on topic, yes it's a stupid idea. even tv people mock it.
or iphoto? or final cut pro? (yes, I know they bought it, but v1 and v6 are a little different)
Apple makes a lot of great 1st party apps. Don't count them out.
Also, what's to stop them from writing custom html hooks into safari that access phone functionality? Isn't that what they did when they supported the canvas tag for dashboard?
i find the Blackberry Pearl a more than suitable replacement for my Treo 650. Not sure if it retains memory when then battery runs out (the treo didn't) but a re-sync gets it back in shape. Plus, the Java apps (esp Google Maps) are much better than the palm software.
Seems like you're already using most people's favorite LAMP based gallery software - I'd take another look at flickr.
I resisted it for a long time, and just uploaded all my photos to it, and am glad to have them all off my server. flickr's easy to use for me - and more importantly - my family and friends. no training, no maintenance, unlimited space, upload via email + phone - all worth 25/yr to me. (cheaper than research and setup time for the software, or the hard drive I was going to have to buy to store the pictures)
The only downside is the 'not my server' argument. In terms of privacy and backup, I trust their maintenance and organization over my home server. Cal Henderson knows more about that stuff than I do, that's for sure.
Get what you like and what you can afford. For my home stuff, I use the video functionality of my Canon Powershot still camera way more than I ever used my miniDV camera.
If you're really planning on making a movie, or need to shoot long form stuff,, get an HDV camera. The new cameras (like the canon HV20) are around $1100, small and have HDMI ports , so you can plug 'em right into your plasma/whatever, but of more interest to pro video folk (and most likely nerds) you can capture right off the sensor via HDMI, skipping HDMI compression. So, if you need to do greenscreen or need a REALLY nice image, that will come in handy.
For general purpose use? Make sure the still cameras dont do what you need. Save the extra $500-$4500, and rent a Z1U or a XLH1 for the big violin recital....
The book is really a-z from acquisition to delivery. If you're looking to shoot on prosumer cameras and edit on prosumer gear, there's something in here for you.
If you're not using After effects, what are you using? The book concentrates on getting professional level finishing and effects out of prosumer level tools. Basically, with the finishing chapter, he's showing you how to replace a Smoke with AE and some elbow grease. If you're using something higher end (Flame/Nitris/Nuke/etc), it probably got stuff you already know how to do in your app, but you'll pick up some handy tips and the book may still be worth picking up.
The scripts alone are worth the price of the book. The color correction thumbnail script is genius.
I'd also look at Colorista - his GPU assisted color correction plugin that evolved out of one of the included scripts. Also super cool.
I feel that the teenagers and young adults that exist now, and certainly the children who will soon become young adults, have a different outlook because they've been "raised" on the internet.
I disagree. Most of us were raised by the internet as well (i've been online since i was 8 or 9, and I'm 34), and many of us still like TV. After a tough day, I don't want to sit down in front of youtube with a beer. You can't fall asleep at your desk, or even with a keyboard in your lap.
There will always be a place for longer form, narrative, high production value video. Whether it comes to you through a coax cable or a cat 5 cable is irrelevant.
don't get me wrong, this thing looks amazing, but i'm surprised no one has commented on the hugeness of this thing. It towers over my already-too-big Treo 650. You really gonna carry that out to the bars?
Wait and see. If they roll a push email server into leopard server at a reasonable price (as opposed to blackberry's and exchange's unreasonable prices) every business with less than 50 people (read: a lot) will buy a new fancy xserve with leopard server. And/or they cut a profitable deal with yahoo, since tons of kids will ditch their gmail/hotmail for yahoo. either way, it's a good play.

To each their own, i guess. I love path finder on my 12inch powerbook (also 1024x768). The tabs are fantastic, and the shell drawer is nice for quick shell work w/o even having to open a terminal. Filter by name is great too, and much faster than spotlight. Real permissions info, custom colors + transparency, secure delete, etc etc. It fixes most of my gripes about the finder (including this one) and the UI is customizable, and is actually fairly similar to the finder UI. In most cases, the features it duplicates, it does in less space...
That said, I agree with your main sentiment that cmd-r should work in the finder (or the finder should jsut plain old work as someone else pointed out.)
As for not installing shareware, isn't that what this whole article is about? If you're happy with windows explorer, stick with that. Personally, I'll take path finder (or the regular finder, or a sharp stick in the eye) instead.

You can only make calls where you have wi-fi service? That's one way to get people to stop bitching about AT+T's lackluster coverage.
Oh yeah, that's right, that other big company just screwed them by going to wal-mart with DRM mp3s.... who was that? UNIVERSAL.

I slipped and modded him troll, when I meant Interesting. So, I'm undoing the Troll with this post.
Damn you, AJAX! If we're gonna build web apps, we need undo.

damn, I was gonna post that. 10 second sitcoms - It was brilliant.

I plug my laptop into a Dell 24" and use the laptop as a second monitor. 2 30" screens is just decadent.

That game is the biggest crossover game since the original super mario bros.
And the DS - well, it's just awesome.

gizmodo had the wrong specs.
Dimensions 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 inches / 115 x 61 x 11.6mm
Weight 4.8 ounces / 135 grams
so, it's only slightly larger than a treo.
