I used to work for one, they sold wireless as their primary broadband offering. In the foothills no less, where there are all sorts of things (like TREES) that killed signal for a sizable slice of people that were interested. NTM the fact that the equipment they were selling (PCMCIA card + PCI adapter + house mounted antenna) cost multiple hundreds of dollars compared to a 200$ ADSL setup fee from the local telco that was *faster*
If you could put the LCD output on a HUD-type thing on the windshield then maybe you could change things and keep your eyes on the road. But as it is, i'd stay far far away from anything that i have to look down to use (this coming from someone who's already had one accident from not paying attention)
Well, if the thing was needed the day before yesterday for $something_important and it didnt get there until the day after tomrrow, then it could be kinda bad. dunno bout nightmare tho. maybe he's just implying that nightmares have occured
If they get ripped off by a seller? Would sure be a great way to cut down on fraud, if all the slimeballs on eBay had the possibility of committing fraud to the US gov't and paying the piper for it
Man I wouldn't have touched one of those things when i was in band in school...one bathroom break and it woulda been gone faster than hot coffee at halftime....
Neat idea though, especially for a musician that goes through a *lot* of music...tho as far as the drop test and writability, i think plain ol paper reigns supreme...NTM the fact that if you forget this thing, ALL Your music is gone
That seems alot like the way ISP's triple their price for "business" access broadband; just charge 'em more money because they have it? Bah, some reward for getting your doctorate

Mainly rear end accidents because people slam on their brakes to avoid getting a ticket. In fact, at many of these intersections, the rear end accidents have doubled or more.
That's called tailgating, which is a violation in itself, and the fault of the following car

The Plague of Frogs

To the naysayers, the common bullfrog is capable of eating ducklings, but its tadpoles are hardly fist sized.
Frogs in a balanced ecosystem, as well as other amphibians, are a good indicator of pollution, but in Hawaii, as in Australia, and the Florida panhandle, non-native frogs overrun native populations by eating everything in sight including the native species.
Well, as it's been said before, those numbers mean next to nothing. But, as someone who just graduated highschool in a medium-rural area, i can tell you that the kids AND adults around here are largely science-dumb. not that these are stupid people, but they dont NEED that knowlege, so they don't bother remembering it.
Kinda like the way i forgot all of the stuff i learned last semster in calculus, but i DID need it (for this sem, calc2)
It's not that it isn't being taught, it's just not being retained. what do you expect when your schools teach towards a multiple choice exam for the better part of your public schooling?
Okay, this is a small-medium sized ISP in the area, really our biggest competitors were AOL and MSN giving away free hours with the computers sold at wally world and staples. Anyhow on to the point. We took calls on a first come first serve basis, or we were supposed to. Our management never had any way to keep a log of people who called, unless we kept track of the phone msg slips. The phone lines in this area (mostly rural) suck balls and make connectivity a nightmare. Our "marketing" people lie. Our equipment, and the equipment of one company we outsourced roaming connections to had KNOWN ISSUES with the Winmodems put in MANY OEM PCs...This made for the following scenarios- 1. At one point i spent an entire afternoon at an old fellow's house. great guy, but we DONT DO HOUSE CALLS. i was there because he was a friend of the management and couldnt figure out why he couldnt burn MIDI MUSIC TO A CD. btw did i mention we were an ISP? I only got paid 7$/hr but that was still company money.
2. Many problems we simply couldn't fix. One customer called in about once a week for several months because he could not get connectivity in one of the more remote parts of the county. Bellsouth insistd his phone lines were fine. he swapped modems at least once. brought his computer to the office, it worked like a charm. To this guy's credit he kept his cool through it magnificently, but it is horrible for morale to have issues you can't fix and be TOLD you can't fix.
3. My afternoons were spent reading/. and AIM'ing after a long period of looking busy. The higher ups moved everythign else we could possibly to do help out in slack times to another location, so i was happy to chew bandwith
I'd believe it. A friend of mine is at a university that offers "high speed" access from the dorm rooms. Their IT admins even go so far as to cap bandwith, though i'm not sure at what level. Must be low thugh, because i've sent files more quickly to people on 56k. and this is to someone not 2 hours away
I could see this being an interesting development for comic and manga artists, but as for me personally, my eyes are bad enough from the time i spend at my desktop. the last thing i need is for another computer device to replace what i do in order to get away from the computer (ie, reading a book)
These guys have obviously never played Sim City 2000 (it's a joke. laugh. =))
But, seriously, how strong are these panels and transmission arrays and whatnot? having no atmosphere an all, the moon gets hit a bit harder by solar wind. If solar flares can disrupt radio comms on earth, imagine what sort of havoc they would play with electronics on the moon?
Lol. Now you wont have any reason to complain when your neighbor's dog craps in your yard, just shovel the mess into your hydrogen-extracter and get enough for a quick outing to the pizza parlor. Make it a trip out of town if you catch the dog and toss it in too.
So, if someone or some group with a vestd interest in causing you problems posted information for your specific house and how to make it fall to the ground, you wouldn't care all in the name of free speech? Bah.
On the one hand, you are corret, its the utilization of this info that makes it a Bad Thing(tm) but, the only possible use of this info is to make bad things happen. To me, that says that not one person in the world has any right or need to know this. if it's illegal to act on (and of course you'd never break the law), why bother knowing to begin with?
what's more, this is a private company trying to keep it's interests secure. As someone else menitoned, security through obscurity DOES WORK in the real world, and a company has every right to keep its routes and schedules private. Banks dont post a sechedule for the armored truck arrivals, last time i checked, and i dont think anyone would be up in arms if they sued someone for persisting in posting such a thing
Power companies do not forbid you from running eight computers, four space heaters and a fridge and washing machine in your home, because it uses too much electricity, they simply charge you for what you use.
Granted this is somewhat a different situation, why can't the NZ telcom do the same for bandwith? Is the cost per megabyte so expensive they think they can't feasibly pass it on to users?
Honestly i'm glad bellsouth doesnt charge me for my bandwith, my connection speed is adequately fast (advertised 1.4mbit) but i would go back to dialup if i had to pay per meg. The scary part would be when they started charging me for the megs going up my pipe due to filesharing instead of down from my own activities.

4-something?
Y'mean $4.xx, $4x.xx, or $4xx.xx ?
The question is, how many /.ers are reading that review and thinking "66Mhz, wow i was using one of those just [time] ago"
For me it's been about two weeks, at dad's office, but i have a pair of defunct 66's around here somewhere
That seems alot like the way ISP's triple their price for "business" access broadband; just charge 'em more money because they have it? Bah, some reward for getting your doctorate
No, it means people who were formally doing something illegal are STILL doing something illegal and now have a good reason to change.

At least s/he didn't mention Jar Jar and Pikachu...
Sounds like fun. Too bad we're not allowed to do that nowadays because it would mean being cruel to an arthropod.
but the rest of us can make a complete system with $3800.00... easily!
And still have enough money left over for a 21" CRT monitor that may well look better

The "rupees" he gets in the movie are red ones, which are worth 20 apiece IIRC. so really he got 400 rupees...
or 20 rubies.
