And considering how flaky broadband providers are, do you really want to trust your phone service to them?
Bellsouth ADSL. I already do trust my phone service to my broadband provider, and both work commendably. However I wonder if there's a potential for liability if 911/emergency services dont work? Either way a cellphone's portable, and you may well end up getting more minutes
Once i was almost at a point where i would have considered myself addicted to Ultima Online...I was on the phone with my girlfriend at the time, and some loser PK'ed my guy...i was tangibly pissed off for a while, and it showed. then she said something, and it was like a slap in the face...made me realize "WTF...oh yeah, this is just a game".. And it is just a game, of course. Until i see some data proving otherwise, its no more addicting than chocolate, pr0n, or even reading (And yes folks, i do know some people who read so much they are out of touch with reality as a result) I'm not sure if I think this is a mental issue ("addictive personality" sort of thing) or if it is just maturity, the same thing as making a kid put down his Pokemon and do his homework.
To suggest that Blizzard et. al are taking advantage of people who get 'hooked' like this is ridiculous, when you consider the VAST majority of players, and thus the most subcriptions, are from people who play in moderation. Though truth be told, they do need players like this, as they make up a large part of the upper tier of the MMORPG world--perhaps the advancement model can be redone so as to not require such a time investment, but that would take away alot of the motivation for *Anyone* to be high-level, that is it wouldnt be special anymore.
Bottom line, this is not an addiction in the drug- sense of the word, but on the same level as eating, slashdotting, reading, masturbation, or over-exercise. Its not that these people can't stop, they dont want to badly enough to find a healthy alternative.
With linux as it is, as long as you have computer users who cant find the shutdown button and can't fathom the fact that the page their browser starts up on doesnt mean they cant go anywhere else, linux will quickly intimidate them. two solutions
1) dumb down Linux to windows standards 2) educate computer users I'm in favor of a combination of these two, but more of the second option
Unless the law specified dstribution of *machine readable* malicious code (ie binaries) then MS et.al. could start nailing those who post proof-of-concept code to demonstrate the flavor of the week exploit in IIS or WinxP or what have you...more security by obscurity, yippee
They say, that three PCI slots will be enough because all that stuff is onboard....okay. But, until the onboard 5.1 sound, and ethernet is everybit as good as what i get from my Soundblaster Live or 3Com NIC, I will continue to use those instead of onboard solutions. the support for so many USB and IDE devices is nice though
To all you people who talk about animals being used to comfort the elderly instead of robots-- the people who work these places oftentimes can't be bothered to keep the people there clean and accomodated, do you think they'll make much of an effort for the furred or feathered company the old folks have?
I'm not touching any computer mod that has me using thread to secure a heatsink to a processor...
I don't see how this is newsworthy? sure it worked..for ten minutes. If you're going to post a watercooling article can't you at least find one that is a semi-permenant solution?
Re:Wireless Monitor? Not happening...

Wireless Monitors?
·
· Score: 1
Something worth noting- TV does meet the bandwith without "cooking your intestines" adequately, but keep in mind that you're nowhere near the high-power transmitter. The transmitter for a wireless monitor wouldn't be that powerful, obviously, but prolonged use might ahve questionable effects....
and besides, if its just 640x480, what's the point?
English- "I love you" translated thanks to altavista, through spanish, italian, japanese, leaves us with "His Matrix"
...I don't know firsthand what some of you guys are talking about when you mention crappy translation of important documents, but I can only imagine...
What exactly is it about the color problems that LCDs have? I've heard people say that newer ones "fixed" this but all of the LCDs i've seen in stores ranged from plain washed out to the pseudo-kiddie effects i used to put on my video games by playing with the brit/con/hue controls on my TV...until they correct that issue i'll happily drag my heavy 17" (soon to be 19 i hope) to LAN parties and whatnot
During my tenure as a helpdesk staffer at a local ISP, i found myself wishing many many times that each and every one of our customers got a CD with IE 5 and Netscape 4.xx on it. main reason being-- Old PCs. 1/4 of the computer market around here is people who got their pentium I or II running win95 second or third hand with IE 3.0 or none at all, or MS Inbox for email. Call me a dumb little techie, but all i had to do is say "i'm sorry that software's a bit old and we dont support it anymore" and they quickly..even gladly! bring it in to let me update it with NS or IE (i let them pick) but it would have saved alot of time and dollars to hand out a CDR with both of these to all new account signups..
In my opinion, if you're fooling around with Mozilla or Opera then you're bright enough to figure your email or tweak DUN settings out on your freakin on.
Wow. pay 500$ for a console, only to have it spend half its time working on someone else's games...on the otherh hand, plug it into a 56k line and watch someone playing Quake 7 have a stroke as their FPS drops to 3

If this goes to court, it'll make another good/. story at some point. A shame though, that he's getting nailed for Lotus's incompetence. Is that looping issue patchable?
A pipe bomb in a crowded subway can kill more people, but it does not level houses, flatten trees, cause flooding, mudslides and all sorts of lovely stuff that a tropical storm does. nor does it release, according to this page up to 6.0 x 10^14 Watts/day of energy. any idea how that stacks up to the hiroshima nuke?

If I dont have to reboot anymore, when am i supposed to go to the bathroom at LAN gatherings?

What happens to the last one standing when the music stops?
I can see it now, a gov't tech switches, and then gets a letter from his boss saying not to come back, they like the other guy better.

What do you tell the old folks? that this is their new friend Blinky? or do you tell 'em its not a real person?

maybe there ought to be an "Obvious" option for mods....
of course he's an idiot. The question is, is he lying or merely uninformed

Yes. You install it, and it works. There might be some security problems you can correct, but you have basic functionality out of the box.

Because being ABLE to patch means at LEAST you have video, disk, and network connectivity
