There are no levels, only skills, and they continue to train even when you are offline. It costs about $20 to start a subscription and $14.95 thereafter. While offline training was one of the few things I really liked in Eve, let's not fool ourselves. The speed at which you train skills is significantly affected by your implants. If you don't grind to get the quality implants, you will constantly be loosing ground with the other players. Also, let's not forget the huge downside of this system. You will never ever catch up to the veteran players who have maxed their learning skills and implants.

If you devote enough time, you can even pay in-game currency for game time, which results in free play. Essentially, you get paid 15 dollars a month to play Eve! It's almost like having a job (which is what playing Eve feels like).

  2. Re:Yawn on Ninja Gaiden II Needs to Level Up the Camera Work · · Score: 1

Ninja Gaiden doesn't need to go down the open-ended route. I think criticizing a game because of a lack of open-ended gameplay isn't really fair because open-ended gameplay doesn't magically improve the game. Look at a Assassin's Creed, while the game is open-ended and has introduced some interesting gameplay aspects, most gamers and critics agree that there is something missing and the sheer fun factor just isn't there. I personally enjoyed NG much more. I think a game can be great or horrible regardless if it's open, linear, or mixed. The important part is if it's executed well. If NG got any more open-ended then it is now, it wouldn't feel the same. Ninja Gaiden has always been about challenging, own-the-shit-out-of-your-enemies-with-badass-ninja-skills, gameplay. I think changing that recipe would only damage the franchise.

Hitler says hi. Or Stalin, or any of the tin-pot dictators killing their own citizens. (No, not an attempt to Godwin the thread, but killing is a valid solution to lots of problems that are difficult to solve so effectively or, yes, so cleanly otherwise.) The GP said he didn't like the idea of killing, he didn't say he was totally against. I myself also hate the idea that killing another human is a solution to the problem, although I wouldn't think twice about doing so to protect those close to me.

Why, yes, it might a shocker but Darwinism works! If you aren't the fittest, you won't kill your killer before he kills you, and you Lose The Game. Some people have hope that we will evolve into something more civilized then lions and gazelles out on the killing field. I don't share the hope myself, but I don't blame them for having it.

...you're joking, right? Your sky god has influenced more slaughter than anything else I can think of. INAC (I'm not a Christian), but I think the GP is referring to the few commandments in the Bible that involve not fucking with other people. Maybe "Thou shalt not kill" comes to mind? It also talked about this guy named Jesus who tried to teach people to love one another. What you are referring to are a bunch of assholes to did a lot of fucked-up shit and justified it by claiming their actions were demanded by God. You think people would magically be really nice to each other without religion? Watch the South Park 2-part series of "Go God Go" for a funny take on why that would never happen.

Also, you should only be reloading when you're safe. Imagine if everyone used stupid aliases like that. People would be asking for cover every 5 seconds even if they were just reloading at the end of the round and don't actually need cover.

Bnetd was cool, but you have to admit that people were using it to playing pirated games to their fullest. Regardless, you can play Blizz games on LAN all you want. It's not that hard to set up local tournaments without software.

Then there's Blizzard, who actively fucked over [linux.com] people making local-type servers for games like Warcraft and Starcraft. What is a "local-type" server? Bnetd was a piece of software that allowed anyone to emulate their own Battle.net servers. There was nothing local about these servers. These people got "actively fucked over" (as apposed to passively fucked over??) because people were able to enjoy multiplayer on the internet without having to authorize their CD key with the official Battle Net. Because of bnetd, there was no incentive for people to buy Warcraft III because they could just pirate the game and still enjoy internet mutliplayer at it's fullest. Blizzard was no doubt losing revenue because of this. They could have also potentially lost significant revenue to people who bought the game but still played on bnetd servers because they used Battle.net to advertise. I fail to see how people can demonize Blizzard for doing this.

If someone lies to me because they know it's a bad time to tell the truth to me or they want to protect me(trust me, there are situations where this can happen), I wouldn't necessarily stop trusting them. Not saying I trust MS, but they've done worse things to upset me.

That, coupled with all the other strange things he did after her disappearance, creates a good case against him.

So yeah, if your friend ends up screwing you over in some fashion (cheating on your wife, stealing your XBox, etc), and then goes missing, you better get the hell out of this country. Or replace the carpeting in your truck, but make sure you do it before your friend goes missing.

Great logic...except that it has nothing to do with what I said. I said Jackson did a great job because THE FILM was a success. I'm saying it would be hard to argue that Jackson did not a good job when you look at the box office numbers, the reviews of critics, and the overall reception of the movie. You can say he did a bad job at keeping consistent with the book, but I have yet to see anyone put up the case that he made a bad movie.

What the fuck does proving awesome isn't equal to successful have to do with anything I said?

The GP didn't say Jackson did an "AWESOME" job, he said that the results were awesome, which is hard to argue considering the success of the films.

However, I think he did a great job. Look at any book-to-movie adaption, aside from movies based off books that read like a movie, the movies always fail to capture everything from the book. Given the herculean task of moving the trilogy to less than 10 hours of film, I don't think anyone could have done a better job. Yes, there were some important parts missing but unless you enjoy sitting down for 5 hours straight (I don't), something had to be cut.

What makes you think that Tech schools don't have non-CS classes in their curriculum? At my large tech school, I took numerous history classes, poli sci, communications (really good for anti-social people to work on their social skills), technical writing, english, and a quite a few engineering, math, and science classes. I really don't think this "tech schools teach CS only, liberal arts provide education outside of CS" dichotomy really exists. It all depends on the curriculum of the specific school you are looking at. Some schools have better curricula than others depending what your goals are.

You'll also meet a more interesting cross-section of people. :) That is a ridiculous statement. There is a total abundance of interesting people that attend large tech schools. Hell, there is probably a wider spectrum due to the large volume of people with respect to liberal arts schools. "Interesting" is a subjective term when you're describing people anyways. Some people think Paris Hilton is interesting for example.

I'm assuming you mean play video games by yourself because playing Halo2 with my roommates was one of the most enjoyable experiences I remember. ask yourself: why is baseball appealing in the first place? because people self-identify with the struggle going on on the field. so when there is achievement, there is pleasure in the spectator I think you miss a very important point made by the GP. While it might make it easier for someone to make it to the big leagues if he/she takes performance enhancers, you still need to talent and work hard to be a professional athlete. I think large portion of MLB players take some sort of legal or illegal performance in enhancers, and people still come out and watch the games, despite how boring baseball is (personal opinion).

In fact, I think if sports allowed athletes more freedom with performance enhancers, everyone would still have an equal opportunity. The way it is now, people can take illegal performance enhancers and get an advantage of people who abide by the rules. These are the people who forgo the "effort and perseverance" as you say, and get an advantage. Such people would not get an advantage if everyone else could get access to performance enhancers without fear of consequences. The struggle to "be the best" would still exist, and could even be more difficult.

The funny thing is, weightlifting, a sport that would be most effected by performance enhancers, and a sport that has to do with pure strength and power alone, actually has some of the loosest drug policies in all of sports. It's pretty much a "don't ask don't tell" kind of policy. But then again, who watches weight lifting?
