Maybe...but I would be really pissed off.
I already paid 30 bucks through Steam in order to play the CS:S beta (or in other words i bought CS:CZ, which is really not worth a dollar if you already own cs). Than I paid 60 bucks for the HL2 silver package to be able to play CS:S source right away. I think Valve is gonna make tons of money off of gullible dumbfucks like me. I knew I was wasting my money when I bought CS:CZ but I just wanted to see what the source engine felt like and I was so sick of the old half life engine. Even though it's sorta my own dumb fault (I even saw it coming), I feel like I was tricked.
Now if they decide to add a Subscription fee, I would be incredibly "steamed." I would do every thing I could to pirate an account before I would pay a monthly fee. I know piracy is illegal but I feel no regret taking advantage of companies that take advantage of me. But if I can't find a way to get a free account, I would probably end up paying the fee. I'm just that addicted to CS and half life I guess.
It prolly won't have terrible character model animation/movements like most mod's on UT2004. The upper bodies of the characters look like they are frozen in time when they run. Not to mention they run around like they have a 3 foot pole stuck up their ass. Some mod's are pretty good and I enjoy playing them, but man, I can't stand it how the character's look more life-like when they are dead than they do alive.
Don't forget Half-life was based of an engine that Carmack and "his crew" made. And probably makes more money by making games for kids with "boogey-man issues" than any other fps game developer in the world.
Not to mention in UT2003/4 you can jump once or multiple times while in the air depending on the server you are playing on. How this is more realistic than bunny hopping beats me.
After a while, I was guessing every corner something would be in. Sure enough. It got to the point where for every new room I entered, I would run in to hit the trigger than backgrack and just wait for whatever it was to appear so I could kill it and move on. I didn't feel like I had any real room to fight the monsters, and it was too dark for me to get any good shots, so that's how it mostly was for me.
Wasn't this type of combat the whole point of the friggin game? If you had more room and lighting to make the process of killing the monsters easier, wouldn't that just make the game more boring?
Alot of the complaints I hear is that people eventually begin to succesuffully and repetively guess where the monsters will be hiding and when they will come out? And some how this repitition is boring. My question is how is this different from any other fucking game? Say you play a track on a racing game over and over and you memorize the turns in your head. It's not boring because you beging to kick ass once you learn the tracks. Or when you face a common monster in an RPG that you know is weak to a certain spell. Or when you find out what units in an RTS counter other units. Even in half-life most of your time was spent backstepping and blowing up little bugs and zombies. My point is that all games or repetitive in some way. But it's HOW the game is repetitive that's important to me. If you don't like fighting in the dark (ie getting your ass kicked), hang out in a place where a monster has to walk through a lighted area to get to you. Even your running in and running out is a tactic that you can use. Developing tactics to overcome the difficulties of the enviroment is what makes the game fun. Since when does learning how to play a game make it more boring?
If you are really dissapointed because you didn't like this type of the close-quartered,challenging, frightening combat...something which iD was saying they were gonna do THIS WHOLE FUCKING TIME, then maybe should read the previews, reviews, and looked at some of the screenshots BEFORE you bought/pirated the game.
I get the feeling you were expecting Half-life 2 when you played Doom3. Why don't you just play the game for what it's worth instead comparing it to something that's totally different.
That hundred grand is split among 16 teams each with 5 players. The most money a player playing cs can make from this tournament is about 6,000 dollars.
I would think the free trips to all over the world including Japan, various places in Europe, and many places arond America would help even more. Not to mention the salaries some of the top players get paid by their team and/or sponsor.
Most of the top players don't sit around play CS on public servers all day, as some might think. Most teams having scheduled practices ranging from 2-4 hours each day. They probably devote less time to their game than most professional REALathletes.
I just came back from the CPL and met with many of the top players. One thing I've noticed is that alot of the top players are actaully quite accomplished athletes. Many of the swedish players are soccer players. And they are thin but well built. I've noticed that I play fps's better if I am regularly exercising. I don't want to go into any deep psyho-analysis but I think the whole mental attidude many athletes develop, such as being determined to win, focused, relaxed, and confident, will bleed off into other things like video games.
I can see how these people can get away with being called a "cyberathlete" because they have to focus, train hard, have good reactions and hand-eye coordination.
I will have to admit though, there were some really pale, fat, and unhealthy players there that manage to hang with the cream of the crop.
The reason I don't answer your points because doing so would be like trying to explain something like the birds and the bess or the Theory of relativity to a very young child. It would take too long and be very frustrating.
When you make a large angry post like that. It's obvious that you are afraid of and don't understand homosexuality. "Homophobe" maybe a label, but it's describes you and the parent ALOT more than the word "liberal" describes me.
Is Bravo even mainstream? I've heard about Queer Eye for the longest time. And this only because South Park had an episode on it. But I didn't even see the show until this last weekend. And I only caught a few minutes of it.
The only way I can imagine homosexuality being "shoved down mainstream" is if you watch TV all the damn time or you watch Bravo all the damn time (who the hell watches Bravo besides for Celebrity Poker?) Or maybe you are unable to push a button on your remote control to change the channel when something "gay" comes on.
You have every right to be a homophobe. But that doesn't mean that we should force shows with themes you are incapable of accepting/understanding to a channel that you can skip (in order to continue your ignorance).
Don't forget F-ZeroX, Smash Brothers MeleeX, Rogue SquadronX, and Chrystal Chronicles X.
You could never expect what the big games for the next PS console are gonna be! (GTA X, FF X, and the EA sports games you can get for the PC and other consoles)
I would think tactics and strategies are very closely tied to the morals faced in wars. If it's the military's strategy was to blow a whole city to kingdom come because a few terrorists are causing problems for them. Would you think that would be the morally correct decision? If it was a commander's decision to send some soldiers into harms way in order to take these guys out without civilian casualities, is it wrong to risk the lives of their own blood? Was there a better way to win WWII besides dropping h-bombs on cities, killing thousands of innocent people? I think you get my point by now.
Alot of the strategies used in military come straight from the top. Thousands of civilians have already died as a result from US attacks in Iraq. The prisoner abuse in that Abu-Ghraib(sp?) prison probably was a tactic used by the soldiers to get information. You think these "keen minds" that we employ are doing a great job? I think by better understanding the tactics and strategies being used, people can also see the moral issues that the military must face. With that said and done, I think voters will/should be interested in understanding the tactics/strategies used in today's wars, as they will have an effect on which "keen minds" will be employed to make these tactical decisions.
I don't think "there won't be anyone who has had time to practice" implies that the game will not be released before the tournament. The phrase "not having time" isn't always meant to be literal. I really "don't have time" to post on slashdot during work, but I do it anyways. People say that don't have time to spend with their children/practice for match/learn how to ski/eat at Red Lobster/etc. You know and I both know that when people say this, it's total bullshit.
It's possible that they won't release the game before the tourney. But I think the Aug 3rd was confirmed by some inside sources.
The article never says that this will be the first time people have played Doom3 multiplayer. It just says that the playing field will be even because people won't have years upon years of perfecting the game (like CS or Q3A). In fact, I think this means that Doom3 has to be released BEFORE QuakeCon.
I don't think our acceptance of gaming company using "booth babes" is a problem (at least from the companies view). As long as guys are always going to look twice when they see a attractive body in the corner of their eye and models are willing to do this type of job... nothing is going to change. I can see how this might offend other females and scare them away from the booths. But I don't think the companies are gonna care if these booth babes tracking flocks of "nerds."
I'm not quite sure how we are gonna stop "supporting this bloody idiocy." You want these kids to ignore the booths with the "really hot chick" and a possibly interesting game to check out? That's like asking a straight person to turn gay.
The game she was representing was someting called 25 to Life. Her comment was that I wouldn't like it. Smart girl; I have no interest whatsoever in killing people or pretending to kill people or being in the ghetto because it's "cool".
That's probably because you aren't 13 years old.
I'm not a big fan of being in the shoes of a gangsta living in the slums or something. I do, however, play violent fps's such as counter-strike or Unreal Tournament 2004. For me, the gore in these games are a very small reason for me to play them if any. I like UT2k4 because the graphics are very beatiful and immersive. Like many people, I like to take a break from my real life every once an while...it relieves stress and it keeps me something to focus on. I think the kid and me has always wonder what combat would be like. Althought these games are far from realistic combat, it appeals to the violent side of me...without hurting anyone.
Some of the enviroments that you call "repellant" (which comes of as somewhat elitist to me...sorry to offend) are good represenations of REAL enviroments that REAL people live in. People who live in these enviroments are constantly afriad...it's not the easiest thing in the world to be non-violent when your family is in danger every day. I feel incredibly lucky that I don't live in such a situation. But sometimes I want to get an idea of how it feels like to be in dangerous enviroments...without actually endangering myself.
You bring up a very good point. As I was writing the sentence you quoted, I was thinking to myself that's not a completely valid statement. Now that I give it more thought I know a shitload of girls that are dating guys who don't seem to have a shred of intelligence located within them.
But I think a more accurate statement would be "Girls are very attracted to guys with alot of money" or perhaps "guys who are really talented at something." I realize that intelligence isn't always proportional to how much money you have, but I think in most situations, that's the case. I think I read something saying that girls are narturely attracted to the talents a guys has, more than anything. Because those talents usually allow the guy to make money to support her and her babies.
One of the girlfriends I had in college liked me because she thought I was smart. Although the reason she thought I was smart was because I was CS major and had good grades (which I believe is more of a result of hard work than intelligence). She also liked the fact that I had passion for video games (I competed in LAN tournements).
I find that each person gauges intelligence in variable ways. For example, people who are very good at speaking and able to start very interesting conversations, seem intelligent to me. While my x-gf thought intelligence was something totally different.
I also have a few friends that who are very bright (to me at least). And they always have no trouble getting girls...or even "stealing" the ones I like from me.
I think there are many slashdotters out there that have nice high-paying jobs that they somewhat enjoy (more so than alot of people I think). Engineers, scientists, programmers, technicians...these are the "nerds" that are making the dough, and alot of girls/women are at least initially attracted to that. I know a couple of programmers with some drop dead gorgeous wives.
I think this is enough evidence(to me) that at least the "nerds never get any action" stereotype is nothing more than a stereotype. Maybe not most of the girls like intelligent guys, but enough to make it possible for nerds to at LEAST touch girls. I think your view of "women look for someone who is kind, stable" is more of a reason why a girl stays with a guy. But I notice girls seem to be initially attracted to guys for reasons ranging from "wow he so so smart" to more stupid things like height or curly hair. Being fun is another thing I have seen girls be attracted to, however.
Most of the examples of the girls I've used are college students from Texas though. They could possibly be different than the females you come into contact with now.
...that finds these girls, for the most part, unattractive? I suppose a few of them have good bodies. But none of them would make me "shake when I put my arms around them." I can't believe there are actaully guys who are that deprived. I think it's a very inaccurate stereotype that "nerds" don't get any action. I find that most girls are very attracted to intelligence and to guys with a passion for technology.
If you're one of these guys who goes to E3 conventions and freak out around girls that are halfway attractive. Do us slashdotters a favor and stop giving us a bad name by freaking out these poor women! At least pretend that you've touched a girl before or something.
On the contrary, I think most travelling tourists do in Las Vegas isn't between airport and hotel, it's usually between hotels and casinos. The project will be quite useful for the Casinos as it will make it easier for the tourists to come in and blow 500 bucks on black jack. I went to Las Vegas (for leisure) for three days. I have never walked so much in a three day period. I would say I did about 4 hours of walking everyday. Most of this was walking was from our timeshare to hotels like the Excalibur or the MGM grand. Getting taxi isn't a great option because it costs 10 bucks and isn't much faster than walking on the strip. The buses on the strip aren't worth the few bucks either because the strip is constantly congested (filled with all those cars driving around with ads on them). When my friends and I got to Las Vegas we were dissapointed to find the monorail hans't opened yet. It would have saved us so much time. Although it's probably good that we didn't have more time to gamble our money away, and it was also good exerice. But I think it will help the decongest the strip. It gets pretty annoying walking the strip with the ubiquitous "card-slappers" that try give you escort service/strip-club ads all the time. I think the monorail is very useful indeed.
Maybe...but I would be really pissed off. This is also simply wrong, the 5900XT is the best bang-for-the-buck on the market.
Ummmm...from what source did you get this information.
Toms Hardware says otherwise.
Yeah, the charts are quite a bit old. But the price drops from both companies since then seem to be very comparable.
As a PC user the only response I have to that is...J00 R T3H SUXX0RS, ST00PID N00B!

For real man.
"she "lost" half a day of her life."
Oh my sweet Jesus! There has been a loss of life. I demand retribution! I could have gained 5 levels on my Level 69 bowazon!
Awww you poor girl. Do you want some tissue?

The patch only takes advantage of the Geforce 6800. And if you look at the benchmark's it adds about 2 fps. Not something I would spend 400 bucks on.

drive it the same way a hamster drives his ball; create an magnetic impulse between the internal and external sphere
Holy crap! Where do you get your hamsters from? I want a magnetic impulse generating hamster, damnit. Just think of the possibilities!
1) Buy hamster with ability to create magnetic impulse
2) ???
3) Profit!
