Another reason why cs is being held back is the general sportsmanship of the community. It's just pure trash. I have played cs for 3 years and I am currently in Cal-Premier(one step below cal-i) and attend most of the CPL's. Unfortunately, I've noticed one of the biggest differences between CAL-p and the lower-tier leagues that I've played in, is that most teams will pull out all the BS they can to beat you. Many teams find loopholes and ambiguity's in CAL's rules to totally screw their opponents. For example, CAL rules states that a team can refuse to play on a server if there is a ~75 ms difference of ping. So players will start messing around with their netcode rates to raise their ping and make a fair server seem very unfair. So than they make you play on their server, which they are very comfortable with, and their opponent pings +50 to, for the whole match. You can make a complaint to the CAL admins, but many CAL admins are very biased as they are "befriended" by many players. So sometimes you're just SOL in some matches. I'd also like to point out that about 50% the matches I've experienced have involved trash talking and threats (idle threats mind you), it gets pretty annoying.
In terms of online leagues and tournaments, professional gaming will go nowhere...at least for quite a while. In CAL-i there really aren't any conferences. So teams from the east coast will play teams in california and etc. This often causes ping issues which leads to teams fighting over which server to play on. There have also been many incidents of intentional shutting down of servers and hacking.
I think if CAL got sign-up fees from it's players they could really cut down on all the BS. But servers will still crash on accident, packets will be lossed, and the netcode for cs is inconsistent. Unless, you're on LAN your bullets don't always land where you expect them too. I think the game needs to move on to a new engine (which is why im exicited about HL2 being released with CS). The technology for cheap, reliable gaming servers and fast, reliable, internet connections also needs to improve if professional gaming is to go anywhere online.
Once this happens, who knows what will happen with CPL.
My mom basically runs a country dance club in my hometown. It has well over 500 members in it. Every month she sends out a newsletter by email to all the members that request it. She's already have had problems with spam. Her ISP's spam protection labeled her address as a spammer so she couln't get these newsletters to anyone for a while. Her dialup ISP seemed be pretty cool about it when she called them, and were able to resolve the problem immediately. But if her ISP would follow the ways of these email providers, it would probably force her to email the newsletter over the course of a few days, which would be really annoying and cause problems. Assuming she doesn't get "unplugged."
I can understand that spamming has got really out of hand, and that something needs to be done about it. But I think the countermeasures might screw other people (like my mom) who are running non-profit orginazations and are sending information on their member's request. It's unfortunate that a handful of people who want to make a few dollars by abusing a system screw over the people who use that system ethically.
In effect they are stiffling the creativity and enjoyment of the other people.
First of all, How is using aimbots and wallhacks enjoyable? All you do is see people through walls and your crosshair snaps to them and you fire and than bam...the fights over. I don't see the entertainment value in this. At best, it would get boring really fast.
Look at it from Valve's point of view. Most people DO NOT cheat. And the few people who do cheat are making the game much less enojoyable for the rest. Which hurts Valve's business.
There is a huge difference between what Valve is doing and what the RIAA is doing. The majority of people who are downloading hacks from Valve not only screw Valve over but they are getting on CS servers and simply making the game suck for most of the online community. Downloading and pirating songs takes away a few bucks from some millionaires. Whoopty freaken doo! But online tournaments are starting to spring up here and there. Theres even a site that allows people to bet money that they are the better CS player. Although there are anti-cheat measures in these matches, I'm sure hackers have found away to circumvent them with all these new OGC and other hacks that are CONSTANTLY being updated. This makes it hard for people who are really experienced with CS and other games to want to touch online tournaments with a 10 foot pole.
To me, the benefits of Valve sueing people who create/distrubute hacks would significantly outweigh the drawbacks. I think hackers are stiffling the creativity and enjoyment of other people much more than anything else.
I can see exactly why you're a liberal. You believe that you are better than the common American and so you want government to provide services to these people because they can't provide for themselves, right?
wow...Just wow!
I can't say much more than that. Do you always turn discussions into political bashing like this? There aren't really any intelligible points to your post. You just attempt to make the grandparent feel bad for his opinions. I know I shouldn't be feeding your troll post, but I want you to realize that people don't always form their opinions in a political context like you do. Hell, I bet if the guy didn't say he was liberal you would have AGREED with him. That's more sickening than anything else I've seen on here. It's also sad that people judge others based on lables such as "liberal" and "conservative." Which is an action that is evident by the tone of your post.
I don't think "liberals" OR "conservatives" are the problems to this society. It's closed-minded assholes like you that prevent people from achieving their political goals.
I know that this was a pretty recent game that didn't have any copy protection. There was no CD keys or anything. I believe you had to have a CD in the drive to play it. But I don't remember having to get a no-cd crack to run it off a burnt cd. I'd imagine that they saved lots of money by avoiding all this copy protection.
Any know how well Lucas Arts did with jk II? I think they are setting a good example for other game companies that shows them that fighting against piracy hurts themselves more than it helps.
Maybe I'm missing something here...but woulnd't it be easier for them just to send you an email with a generated password. If the email is bogus, they don't get the password. If the email is truly their real email address, than they will be able to use the site.
In the beginning of one of the E3 demos for Half-life 2, they show a face of the "G-man" (or whatever you call him) in his old school HL1 form. The screen fades away and the HL2 version of himself appears. The difference is amazing. The old face looks like a square block with some hair on top of it compared to the new face. The new G-man also pulled off some very believable expressions that the old models would never come close too. In the video, you can hear people laugh as he smiled like a horny old man.
If you ask me a cube with some textures on it the resemble a face are ALOT more creepy than what has been coming out recently. I think it's good and important that animators and graphics artists keep striving for perfection. Some of the results might seem creepy, but this is shouldn't be a reason for computer graphics artists to switch directions.
I think some people are trying too hard to MAKE themselves believe that what they are seeing is real. They should realize that movies and games are all fake and are there to provide us for a temporary escape from our real lives. If you're creeped out by some fabricated thing on your monitor/tv screen, I'd hate see how you'd react to some one actually getting shot...or maybe even a spider for that matter.
I mean if our brilliant president gets hurt by these things, they have to be dangerous right? I mean jeez, travelling 5 mph at one foot off the ground. Using those segways are almost as dangerous as JOGGING.
If you listen closely to the dialogue, the reason why he shoves the soulstone into his head is because he believes that no one could be trusted with the thing. I guess he thought it was the best way of making it sure it wouldn't fall into the wrong hands. I guess your character ends up being Diablo (D2) anyway. So maybe it was a dumbass idea afterall. I guess it was the best ending Blizzard could think of to keep the plot going.

I've been browsing the comments of this article with points boosted for flamebait and trolls. Almost all the flamebait/troll posts are people merely saying "I can get what I want for a cheaper price" or "The new Mac is too expensive for me."
WTF!? Why are these comments being modded down? They are just opinions. I know that most of you disagree with that opinion but it doesn't make them a troll. It seems like no one can get away with saying something negative about Macs around here. These type of posts get modded down faster than racist or religously offensive posts. I think this is rediculous. I've had/used Macintoshes since I was in 5th grade, and I think they are quality products. But there's no need to start a holy war for them. Please save your mod points for something more useful.
I'm thinking if the author of this worm would have made it attack the windows update site a few days ago, when the number of infected computers was at its peak, it would have caused a lot more damage. I'm sure most of us on/. would have figured a way to get the update from somewhere else (assuming WU gets taken out). But what about all the computer illiterate users who were too clueless to update their systems ahead of time in the first place?
I think there would have been alot more problems if the author predicted the spread of the worm more accurately. Am I correct in assuming this?
Because as time passes, it's less painful to the people who were affected by it. I'm sure when Otzi the caveman died it was a tragic event to some one. Are you saying that you feel pain for when Otzi died? Please.
If you killed some one to save your mother, but condemned killing in general? Would that be hypocricy? Probably.
But if you wouldn't be save your mother in order to avoid being a hypocrit, not only would you no longer have a mother but you would live with the guilt that you sat by and did nothing.
You can't be sensitive to everyone all the time, otherwise this would be a perfect world...oh wait you probably think such a thing can exist.
I'm no history buff but I think the soldiers in World War II had a little bit more of a reason to fight then "liberating" Iraq from a cruel regime. To me American Soldiers in WWII are heroes. They were fighting for the future of the world. Who knows what the world would be like if it weren't for the landing at Omaha. I love WWII movies and WWII video games because brings me closer to understanding what happened and what kind of events the people had to suffer. The entertainment I get isn't entirely from the action scenes. It's the pride I get for our grandfathers who took on such a great burden that makes me glad I forked over the 8$.
I already know what Americans are going through in today's events. I don't want to play a game to get today's news. Maybe if we weren't cuasing more problems over there than we were fixing, I'd might not despise such a game.
There's a big difference between making money off of tragedies and atrocities that are still close to people's hearts, than making money by glorifying heroes of the past. Maybe you can get karma points other ways besides insulting people, eh Mr. Hawk?
Oh and I think most people here regret ever seeing that piece of lameness called "Titanic." Please don't remind me of that garbage.
I don't consider watching my ship mine asteroids for 3 hours straight so I can get a better ship a fun experience. Maybe it gets better once your character becomes stronger and you get deeper into the game. But I can only recall going into combat once in the game, and that was the tutorial. The only MMO game that I have yet to lose interest in is Planetside. You gain levels and skills just like RPG's but combat is just like quake3 and other FPS's. And you have to work as a team and communicate well in order to take over bases. And in my opinion thats alot more fun than watching a 3d model swing his sword at the air in his enemies direction and reading in a dialog box: "Your swing did 5 damage to the attack bunny."
The only problem with planetside is that your system as to be UB3r L33t for you to have an enjoyable experience.
If the program is written well, it can be impossible to tell the difference btween a good player and a hack.
Once you've been playing long enough it gets pretty easy to tell the difference.
The matches are played on tournament computers. Which all have the exact same hardware/software. They are closely monitored by CPL volunteers 24/7. While the matches are being played the players are being constantly watched by the CPL staff. The BYOC area is just for clans to practice before the matches. And even then, if you think someone is cheating you can just go over to their computer and watch them. If you catch them cheating you can a) bitch slap them or b) get them thrown out and disqualify their team.
CAL is another story though. Every month the CAL admins ban a whole new set of cheaters. It's not surpising though considering theres at least 5,000 clans in CAL-open alone.
And it was a incredibly enjoyable event. There were some incredibly close matches... some going to into overtime or double-ot (including my match). If you guys are wondering what kind of stuff happens at this event you can download coverage at cpl.netfire.com.These videos include some good interviews with top players and summaries of the better matches.
How they tie this to '9/11 fears' is curious considering the hijackers had valid paperwork.
Many of the terrorist hijackers had expired visas for more than two years and the FBI didn't do anything about them. I just don't get how I have a video rental that is two days overdue and Blockbuster is all over my ass.
I think we should put Blockbuster in charge of immigration!

Being able to browse the web with both our hands free. ;)
Yes I do...
do you also realize that conducting raids and seizing lead to arrests rather quickly?
I suppose that's another stupid question.
This is no surpise considering the FBI have conducted raids to seize equipment that might have been used in the theft months ago.
