In the same vein, DON'T ever buy a Matrox card. From what I remember of the common wisdom from back in the day (before nVidia), matrox was all that and more because they were best supported in linux and were high quality cards.
Recently I figured I'd use 'em for high quality 2D (I don't play games so don't really need 3D/OpenGL). Went with a high end Matrox since I was planning on 4+ heads. Big Big mistake. They seem to have the opinion that they have enough paying clients within the Oil/Military industry and that Linux users, in their opinion being synonymous with Freeloaders, don't generate any revenue and therefore can go to hell. Never mind that Linux user or otherwise, I still paid for their card. Fidgeted with messy non-supported drivers for a while and switched back to nVidia with 2 heads.
Now that ATI/AMD looks like they'll come through big for my platform of choice, I'm already a fan. Now if I could drive 4+ 1600x1400 DVI displays, I'd be in heaven.

still not 0.
Odd thing about odds is that when it's not zero, it's not zero. Case in point, what are the odds of being hit by lightening? Twice? Yet it somehow manages to happen. And to those that it did happen to, the low odds don't really seem to be of any consolation.
Forget the bad physics. What about the probabilities?! Don't forget the branch of statistics!! I mean, come on.. What is the probability of bad shit(TM) happening to McClain all the freakin time?? Even worse, what are the probabilities of Bad Shit(TM) happening to McClain exactly as many times as there are Die Hard movies? Either there are some Bad Shit happening to McClain while no one is watching or there are Die Hard movies out there where none of that Bad Shit is happening and McClain is just chillin at home watching TV.
Actually, come to think of it, Bad Shit did happen to his partner Zues. The Motherf*ing snakes on the Motherf*ing plane. But alas, McClain was nowhere to be found.
To those that regurgitate "I have nothing to hide..", I ask them: "So when can I come by and install a web cam in your bedroom?" That usually shuts them up pretty quick.
> Email is not an encrypted protocol by default!
While that is true (ie. the default SMTP), there is also a provision for encryption (SMTPS) between mail servers. At work where I also manage the mail server, I have POPS, IMAPS and SMTPS. I have to also have SMTP since, like you said, most sites by default use unencrypted SMTP.
What is encouraging is that in the mail server logs, I do find that there are a number of mail servers out there that are willing to speak TLS and thus auto-negotiate encryption for email exchange. Since we only allow POPS and IMAPS, the email is a private conversation between the sender and the receiver for sites willing to speak TLS.
Since we are the techies here at/., and i'd imagine a bunch of us manage mail servers, if all of us enabled TLS for SMTP, over time, enough mail servers doing TLS would mean that email sniffing would be a thing of the past. (I realize this is a tall order for sites handling massive number of emails but for small to medium sites the additional burden of encryption would be peanuts)
It still does nothing for public servers like gmail - but then that's a conscious decision. You can very well run your own mail server or use PGP.
see this for further info: TLS for postfix
> While I agree that vim may not be the best place to start, I feel that it is a great place to end up.
you, sir, are completely off base! it is clear as the mid-day sun in Arizona that *the* great place to end up is emacs.;)
all kidding aside, i started off with TurboC++ IDE. well, a console based one - there wasn't a thing called windows(tm) back then. then onto VisualStudio (along with a number of others) and then i 'discovered' emacs. haven't looked back since.
i do, however, disagree that IDEs are better at managing a large number of files. grep/sed/awk/bash/elisp/python makes for a potent combination unparalleled by any IDE i've run into.
Amps that go to 11 are old news. Nigel confirmed it himself that he now has amps that go to infinity. On The Satch Tapes. Or was he saying that Satriani had those amps? I forget. Whatever the case may be, somebody has amps that go to infinity dammit. Top that you evil volume level compressors!
> Would you consider a book that you bought now exclusively yours, then copy it and redistribute it? Of course not.
You said it! the authors have a right to have their works be used in a manner acceptable to them (rights granted withing the copyright framework etc.). Conveniently Tivo doesn't seem to want to honor that right of the FSF. Just because they bought it at $0 doesn't mean Tivo can pretend it's in free domain. Tivo doesn't seem to want to play by the rules set fourth by the creators/distributors of the GPLed software but doesn't seem to have any problem whatsoever turning around and expecting that their customers play by their rules. Don't you think that a tad bit hypocritical?
> What about your house? You own your house so does that give you the right to modify your water, gas and electrical hookups to bypass the meters? No.
you didn't by the hookups, you bought the house.
> Your car? Do you have the right to drive your property you bought however you feel like? No - there are rules you must abide by.
I do have the right to drive it however I like as long as I do it within my property. When I use public areas, yes, there are rules of sharing the public areas I must abide by to make sure it's equitable to everyone sharing the public areas. but the rules are for sharing the roadways not for how to use my car, my property. Ever notice how the driving booklet says "Rules of the Road"? and not "Rules for using your car"? If I kept my car within my premises I'm fairly certain I can drive it however I damn well please.
> Tivo has a right to do what they want to their products. If you buy it and attempt to take it apart, well then that's fine and your right, but they also have a right to put mechanisms in place to deny you further service if you do.
when people say "i've got nothing to hide..", i usually come back with "well then when can i come by and install a webcam in your bedroom?" most shut up. some mention privacy. my point exactly.
well, my dad always told me "find the second best thing you like and make that into a career." i love playing guitar. that's my hobby. computers/software is my career. it's working out all right. if i had to play the guitar for a living i know that i'd get burnt out with that just as easily as i would get burnt out with computers. but then i couldn't relax with playing the QWERTY.
server side "push" seems to be a recurring theme. pointcast in (around) '99 tried it. couldn't scale very well. the beauty of client side HTTP is the statelessness. which also happens to be a pain in the a**. anyhow, i somehow don't think a server side push will work out except for niche application for a limited number of users.
let's not forget that diversity is essential for long term survival. unless you belong to the camp that believes evolution theory is just a 'theory', it's hard to argue against diversity. the mono-culture leads to susceptibility, in nature as well as in computing, to various ailments in the long run. it's uncanny how the real world tracks with the computing world in this regard - viruses can wipe out mono-cultures pretty easily. much harder with a diversified target.
are you using the UNO bindings? we do something similar with about 1000+ documents on each run. and found that after about 100 or so documents, OOo stops responding. so we had to put a nasty hack of killing OOo after evey 50 or so documents and restarting it. this was OOo 2.1. i'd love to hear what your experiences are...

i like to think of GPL as the block party. the whole block is invited - come as you are, or bring something if you want. feel free to eat as much as you'd like. just don't expect to show up and take all the food home with you depriving everyone else. so yes, it's not *totally* free, there's just one restriction - you can't hog all the food after the rest of the block spent time preparing it.
analogies are just that - analogies. perfect for setting up a straw man. but that's kinda how i like to think of it. i have this mental image of a tv ad with linus, RMS, Alen Cox and a few hippie/hacker types and IBM suits (in suit and tie) having a block party. i think that would make more sense than the 'boy growing up' ads IBM put out a few years back.

Well, me and my karma will burn for this (never has that phrase been more on-topic!). Incidentally, the word "karma" comes from the Hindu religion.

Yup. Those would be your tests. There are many tests. Those are yours.
According to those tests, FSM and IPU clearly are religions.
