Many people have mentioned that NASA just seems to be lingering, not really accomplishing much now in comparison to times of the past, or that what they are accomplishing now is heading in the wrong direction. An AC posted a reply with a rather fascinating link to this site that talks about an idea that uses the external tank (ET) of the space shuttle as a structural component in space for creating "Space Islands". I thought this topic should be given more light here instead of being buried several levels down in the comments. The structures could house many people and huge amounts of experimental and self-sustaining equipment and processes, using several ETs linked together that NASA throws away after each SS launch (they partially burn up in the atmosphere after being let go and then crash into the ocean near Hawaii). The site is somewhat old (they make references to the upcoming 1996 presidential election, heh) but the information seems that it could still apply. One of the key ideas behind this process is that we have already spent almost all of the energy required to place these ETs into orbit (and in the site's words, the ETs are actually "nudged back down" to begin burning up in the atmosphere and crashing into the Earth). The ETs are not released until the SS is approaching its 200 mile orbital altitude, the boosters have been released, and the SS is operating on its own engines. Other ideas include creating artifical gravity by spinning the structures (the ETs are proposed to be formed into a circle, where the actual living and operating spaces would be placed in the radial direction on the arms of the circle), and the ability to move the structures through the solar system (to, say, Mars) and then use transport vehicles to drop down to our destination once in orbit around the desitnation. Sounds like a great idea to research to me unless major flaws have since been discovered that would impede such a design.

I remember visiting an engineering firm where they field tested new electronic devices to see if they met FCC requirements for emissions - they noted that they have tested computer equipment and cases before, although they mainly stick to car radios and whatnot, and that they have rejected many test subjects. Most case mods involve some sort of window that I would tend to think would cause interference with adjacent electronic devices. Any thoughts on this, or anyone know of problems setting modded cases next to your monitor/speakers/TV/entertainment equipment? Perhaps all the other devices' shielding is enough to protect it.
Woot! Calvin and Hobbes. Never thought I would see references to C&H in slashdot comments. I spent my whole childhood reading every C&H comic, and then starting over once I started running out of newer material. And they weren't just comics for fun, they provided interesting perspectives on a lot of social and moral issues. Although, I didn't understand quite a few of the references since I started reading them when I was 9 or so. Oh yeh, Hobbes is my favorite, and it annoys me how everyone thinks Calvin is just some piss head kid that is mad at everyone (ie Calvin peeing on [insert any car manufacturer here] stickers and Calvin peeing on [insert anything else you might not like here] stickers). Calvin is nothing like that at all. Wonder if Bill W had any say in that sort of usage of a pic of Calvin, I can't imagine him letting it slide, had to be whatever company owned him/C&H/the books at the time.
Oh yeh, at the previous college I attended, somebody had taken an old Dodge caravan (probably 1990 or 1991) and painted some C&H stuff on it. They had 2 or 3 actually comics painted on there (blown up to proportions to fit on the sides/back) and had the C&H title painted on there. I thought it was the coolest thing ever when I saw it. Shoulda taken some pics cause it was on campus every couple weeks or so.
I guess it's not suprising to see the University of Michigan up there. They tend to give in to that sort of pressure, basically rolling over for the opposition. Just like their racist admission policies. Take two students, one a white male and one a black male, from the same exact high school with the same exact GPA, same ACT/SAT scores, same high school curriculum, same financial situation, and same extra curricular and community involvement... Guess who gets admitted? The black male, 100% of the time. UMich seems to be forgetting who and what we are fighting. Forget about equality and let's all be racists. Forget about fair use rights and that P2P is not just for illegal sharing, let's just restrain our student's freedoms. UMich seems to continually forget that it is the STUDENTS that pays for a large portion of their $3.6 Billion yearly budget.
Didn't George H.W. Bush make a public statement regretting that he ever signed the ADA? I put some key words in to Google but couldn't come up with anything. I for one think things like handicapped parking spaces, building/sidewalk ramps, handicapped restrooms/drinking fountains, public braille signs, and automatic doors are great. But, some of the other stuff trying to be pulled under the ADA (and most definitely this lawsuit) is ridiculous. The guy is gonna need help getting on the plane anyhow, since I doubt he has the floor plans of the airport and plane memorized, so he might as well get someone to help him order the tickets too. Ya gotta have some sympathy for him though because he is missing out on seeing a lot of things, and life is more difficult in general when you're blind (I would guess, although I don't know specifically), so you can't be too negative against him, heh.

As I'm sure is the case for quite a few other people who decided to take on a little bit of overclocking, I must say "What HD?". You mean that very faint whirring I hear when I turn my computer on before the 50 dB rocket engine I have strapped to my CPU spins up? Oh how I would love to get the same cooling effect I have now with only the noise of a few HDs, I think I would have to kiss someone. P.S. I think I'm going deaf (moreso in the ear closer to the computer:P).
Is anyone else horribly dissappointed at further appearances of Gandalf in the trailers? The first one I saw showed him for a split second and then focused on the other characters in astonishment to see Gandalf. It left some suspicion as to what was actually happening with Gandalf, although it revealed more than I would have preferred (for other people, since I already know what happens). I was unhappy to see that in the preview, but figured that perhaps not all was lost. However, this trailer clearly shows that Gandalf has indeed returned, after seemingly falling/fighting to his death. It seems like it is a huge spoiler for anyone who hasn't read the books yet, and although it might bring in just a few more ticket sales, the experience that could have been felt at seeing Gandalf return has now been lost. I am extremely dissappointed to see this in the trailer, anyone else have any thoughts on this?
On another note that people have been discussing thus far, I am happy with the story taking place in the movie versus the story taking place in the book. I was discussing this with the group of friends that I went to see the 12:01 showing of FOTR with - that the story that the movie tells doesn't necessarily need to mirror the story told in the book. We came to this conclusion because the gist of the LOTR as well as other stories of similar-type eras is relatively constant. There is good and evil, heroes and villains, battling, love stories, history (of conflict, of development) etc. What then makes a good story is how you tell your particular interpretation of a particular set of events of the era (or of a particular setting - ie think of multiple copies of the same universe, taking on different courses of events to conclude on different worlds with different races, towns, events, goods, evils, etc but still with the same themes at heart as the other worlds). So, the fact that Peter Jackson hasn't mirrored the exact events, settings, and dialogues of the actual LOTR book is not a problem, because although he is basing his interpretation on the sum whole of events in the LOTR book, he is actually making mild interpretations of the world at hand, but still working the same main themes, just with a slight Peter Jackson touch. The movies are not necessarily supposed to be Tolkein's LOTR on screen, they are supposed to be the LOTR story told on screen by Peter Jackson based on Tolkein's interpretation of LOTR ideas and events (since, really, the LOTR story is not Tolkein's, he just provided his grand interpretation and visualization of events that so many people have thought about). Not that I'm knocking Tolkein down or anything, I think he did a great job, I just think that comments on the movie like "he missed this" or "the book wasn't like that" are fruitless - pointless, even. Anyone else want to comment?
I have struggled with MS vs Linux for quite some time now. Over the past several years I have set up various Linux boxes and used them initially, but I always found myself migrating back to the Windows box for simple and daily tasks. Tasks that would seem a lot easier and quicker on Windows vs the Linux boxes (only desktop/office/school tasks though, my OpenBSD box has a permanent place on my shelf as my designated household router/firewall). However, if Palladium interfaces caused enough of a problem with my fair use rights (and perhaps even some non-fair use) I would be forced to leave my Windows boxes and set up some Linux boxes for my permanent use. And I have a feeling that there are a lot of people out there that may be in a similar situation: they know about Linux, perhaps have checked it out a few times, and are just waiting for some sort of bomb shell to put them on the other side of the fence. If people suddenly could no longer play their music collection, or open up important documents, they might decide to take a dive into the alternative(s).
A 1285 sq ft house with 10 rooms? Is this some sort of jail or something? That's just slightly more than 11 x 11 per room. My bedroom by itself is 11 x 13, exluding an attached closet/storage room and my computer extension which together add another 8 x 7. And they feel like a damn fox hole. The other main areas of my house are 3 to 4 times larger. Unless this is some sort of dorm/rental house, then I would understand. If not, then you should go ahead and knock some walls down and make it much more roomy.

Sure, I like to build things and wouldn't mind changing the world, where is my 27,000 sq ft mansion? But really, how does this mansion change the world? I'm sure a lot of progress is being made to help the world out while he lounges around, having shades opened and lights turned on for him automatically, while he listens to some classical music on his hidden speakers as he heads to the wine cellar to get something tasty to drink. Yep, lots of progress going on there, I can see the world's problems just dissolving away.
But you have no idea how many think they had to... or maybe you do, probably somewhere around 95% sound right? I received those packages in the mail and was quite suspicious. So, I setup a Win98 test box on my network in order to load up the software and see what it does. Well, that was a dead end because I ran into so many problems with hardware requirements. But keep in mind, this was a rather old machine, some 133 MHz or so setup that I picked up around 95 (still, it should be quite capable of connecting to the Comcast network without any bloat, and was able to in the past). I called in tech support a couple times to see if I could find solutions for some of the problems and basically ended up finding out that it didn't change any hardware settings or whatnot (I thought they might have be trying to push everyone through proxies with the switch-over). Now, that was just me, but at least I had suspicions. I also setup my grandma's box with Comcast cable, and when the software came in the mail she must have called me and/or mentioned something about the software several times, along the lines of "Will it still work after the date listed, because the package said it is absolutely critical to install the software before the network switches over.". I explained a few ideas about the network each time and she seemed to finally agree with me and everything turned out alright. But for the million of other Comcast subscribers that don't have a nerd to turn to, how can they be sure? And, more importantly, will they just end up taking the "safe road" and installing the software anyhow?

But see, the problem with the faxes is that they are imposing their message upon us. Fine, they can express whatever they want through the 1st amendment, and whoever wants to listen can, and neither the broadcasters nor the listeners can be barred from doing so. However, people can also choose to not listen. But, by sending a fax to a person who does not want to listen to your message, you are forcefully making them listen to your message. This is an extension of expression that the 1st amendment does not cover. The first amendment was created as an agreement between people and the government - the government can not bar anyone from expressing themselves. However, junk faxes are between people and people (the company being composed of other people, executives, boards, etc) and the 1st amendment makes no guarantees that you have the right to express yourself to any other person. In fact, people deny the act of expression to other people every single day. Don't like where a conversation is going with another person? Walk away - you are not allowing them to express themselves to you. Don't like something you're reading? Throw it away - you are not allowing the author to express themselves to you. Even companies deny expression to employees every day. If you voice an opinion that the company doesn't like, they fire you - you are no longer allowed to express yourself to or at the company.
However, how can we deny expression by one company trying to fax us something while allowing expression by another company (or indivdual) trying to fax us something. We can't just simply walk away from the offending company (unplug the phone line) as that disables us from receiving expressions from others. Well, we could just contact the offending company and let them know that you no longer wish to allow them to express themselves to you, but my guess is that asking doesn't work (otherwise we shouldn't have a problem here). So, you need some way to bar them from expressing themselves to you... a government - which is the sum of all the people in the country, if the offending company wants to live in our country, they need to obey our standards and rules - is used. So, the government (who has the power) acts on behalf of the individual (who has no power) to enforce the wishes of the individual upon the offender. And the individual's wish is finally fulfilled.
The problem we now run into is that the offending companies try to spin the situation into an attack on their 1st amendment rights by the government. Instead of telling the public that the government action being taken (or attempt at being taken) is on behalf of another individual, they claim that the big government is just trying to shut them down while violating their 1st amendment rights. But, the truth of the matter is that the government is not even involved with the company, it is acting as an agent on behalf of the individual and solely represents the invidual.
The 1st amendment does not guarantee one party the right to forcefully deliver their message to another party, it simply guarantees that the government, acting on its own, can not deny a party the ability to express themselves to another party if both parties wish to be involved in the expression.
Wolfenstien in 1280x1024, lightmap, all eye candy was usually 250-330 FPS. When it hit 400 FPS I about dropped a load.

Other than being glad that the architecture is advanced enough to achieve such numbers, why would you be astounded at this? I mean, its only another ~100 FPS that you only notice because you can see the actual FPS numbers, not because the quality is any better. See, I was astounded when I dumped my old TNT2 for a Radeon 7500 a month or two ago and I could actually walk through a fire fight (in any game) without the FPS dropping into the single digits (5 FPS TFC is not fun). I was astounded at that, but still not load-droppingly-astounded:P
Having said that, I still can't get extremely high resolutions with all the extras on to work absolutely great on my 7500, although $57 for a 64 MB DDR 7500 back in May was not that bad:) I would love to see some of the newer games runnings at 1600 x 1200 with everything on and going at 80+ FPS.
Well I guess we could compare a V10 Viper and a V8 Ram then just to keep the numbers in line. However, I think it would be pretty safe to say that the Viper would not be able to pull as much as a Ram because the Viper isn't designed to pull like a Ram is. We can head over to Dodge.com and pull up a comparison sheet between a 2002 Viper GTS and a 2002 Ram 3500 SLT LWB and look at them together. And one of the most notable set of numbers I see is the weight of the vehicle itself. The Viper weighs in at 3,460 lb and the Ram weighs in at 5,979 lb - an extra 2,500 pounds. This weight is important in towing because although the Viper can get 490 lb*ft of torque, more than the 345 lb*ft from the Ram, it does not have as much weight to put that torque to the ground in order to pull something. It could prolly pull any small item like a jet ski, or mid size boat. But, if you try load up a 2,000 lb trailer with 8,000 lb of gravel, you aren't gonna get as far in the Viper as you will in the Ram.
Your comments on AMD are the only place where I could even see this type of case going. You can't sue Intel for selling a 1.4 GHz chip when in fact it runs at 1.4 GHz. It would be like suing Dodge because the V12 in a Viper can't pull the same amount of weight that the V10 in a Ram can, even though 12 is a higher number than 10 so you thought you should be able to pull more, it doesn't work that way. The other limits in the computers (RAM, HD, NB, SB, etc) and vehicles (engine literage, gear ratios, tire composition, etc) alter the performance of the selling numbers (GHz, Vxx) and have to be analyzed along with the selling numbers. This case should absolutely go nowhere in court unless you get some clueless judge up there.
However, AMD with its PR rating system is held to a different caliber because no longer are they selling their products based upon a particular specification of their product, but they are now selling their products based on an interprational 'performance' specification that is not a hardcoded part of the product. I could see people suing AMD if they bought an AMD 1600 and found it to be slower than their former Intel 1400 MHz computer. I would still think that a case along these lines would be completely absurd (why should we ever reward people's ignorance, suits should be reserved for cases where damage was actually done, or people were mislead to the point of damage in their life) - but, I could see it happening.

And I have a feeling that there are a lot of people out there that may be in a similar situation: they know about Linux, perhaps have checked it out a few times, and are just waiting for some sort of bomb shell to put them on the other side of the fence. If people suddenly could no longer play their music collection, or open up important documents, they might decide to take a dive into the alternative(s).
A 1285 sq ft house with 10 rooms? Is this some sort of jail or something? That's just slightly more than 11 x 11 per room. My bedroom by itself is 11 x 13, exluding an attached closet/storage room and my computer extension which together add another 8 x 7. And they feel like a damn fox hole. The other main areas of my house are 3 to 4 times larger. Unless this is some sort of dorm/rental house, then I would understand. If not, then you should go ahead and knock some walls down and make it much more roomy.

Sure, I like to build things and wouldn't mind changing the world, where is my 27,000 sq ft mansion? But really, how does this mansion change the world? I'm sure a lot of progress is being made to help the world out while he lounges around, having shades opened and lights turned on for him automatically, while he listens to some classical music on his hidden speakers as he heads to the wine cellar to get something tasty to drink. Yep, lots of progress going on there, I can see the world's problems just dissolving away.

But you have no idea how many think they had to... or maybe you do, probably somewhere around 95% sound right? I received those packages in the mail and was quite suspicious. So, I setup a Win98 test box on my network in order to load up the software and see what it does. Well, that was a dead end because I ran into so many problems with hardware requirements. But keep in mind, this was a rather old machine, some 133 MHz or so setup that I picked up around 95 (still, it should be quite capable of connecting to the Comcast network without any bloat, and was able to in the past). I called in tech support a couple times to see if I could find solutions for some of the problems and basically ended up finding out that it didn't change any hardware settings or whatnot (I thought they might have be trying to push everyone through proxies with the switch-over). Now, that was just me, but at least I had suspicions. I also setup my grandma's box with Comcast cable, and when the software came in the mail she must have called me and/or mentioned something about the software several times, along the lines of "Will it still work after the date listed, because the package said it is absolutely critical to install the software before the network switches over.". I explained a few ideas about the network each time and she seemed to finally agree with me and everything turned out alright. But for the million of other Comcast subscribers that don't have a nerd to turn to, how can they be sure? And, more importantly, will they just end up taking the "safe road" and installing the software anyhow?

But see, the problem with the faxes is that they are imposing their message upon us. Fine, they can express whatever they want through the 1st amendment, and whoever wants to listen can, and neither the broadcasters nor the listeners can be barred from doing so. However, people can also choose to not listen. But, by sending a fax to a person who does not want to listen to your message, you are forcefully making them listen to your message. This is an extension of expression that the 1st amendment does not cover. The first amendment was created as an agreement between people and the government - the government can not bar anyone from expressing themselves. However, junk faxes are between people and people (the company being composed of other people, executives, boards, etc) and the 1st amendment makes no guarantees that you have the right to express yourself to any other person. In fact, people deny the act of expression to other people every single day. Don't like where a conversation is going with another person? Walk away - you are not allowing them to express themselves to you. Don't like something you're reading? Throw it away - you are not allowing the author to express themselves to you. Even companies deny expression to employees every day. If you voice an opinion that the company doesn't like, they fire you - you are no longer allowed to express yourself to or at the company.
However, how can we deny expression by one company trying to fax us something while allowing expression by another company (or indivdual) trying to fax us something. We can't just simply walk away from the offending company (unplug the phone line) as that disables us from receiving expressions from others. Well, we could just contact the offending company and let them know that you no longer wish to allow them to express themselves to you, but my guess is that asking doesn't work (otherwise we shouldn't have a problem here). So, you need some way to bar them from expressing themselves to you... a government - which is the sum of all the people in the country, if the offending company wants to live in our country, they need to obey our standards and rules - is used. So, the government (who has the power) acts on behalf of the individual (who has no power) to enforce the wishes of the individual upon the offender. And the individual's wish is finally fulfilled.
The problem we now run into is that the offending companies try to spin the situation into an attack on their 1st amendment rights by the government. Instead of telling the public that the government action being taken (or attempt at being taken) is on behalf of another individual, they claim that the big government is just trying to shut them down while violating their 1st amendment rights. But, the truth of the matter is that the government is not even involved with the company, it is acting as an agent on behalf of the individual and solely represents the invidual.
The 1st amendment does not guarantee one party the right to forcefully deliver their message to another party, it simply guarantees that the government, acting on its own, can not deny a party the ability to express themselves to another party if both parties wish to be involved in the expression.
Wolfenstien in 1280x1024, lightmap, all eye candy was usually 250-330 FPS. When it hit 400 FPS I about dropped a load.

Other than being glad that the architecture is advanced enough to achieve such numbers, why would you be astounded at this? I mean, its only another ~100 FPS that you only notice because you can see the actual FPS numbers, not because the quality is any better. See, I was astounded when I dumped my old TNT2 for a Radeon 7500 a month or two ago and I could actually walk through a fire fight (in any game) without the FPS dropping into the single digits (5 FPS TFC is not fun). I was astounded at that, but still not load-droppingly-astounded
Having said that, I still can't get extremely high resolutions with all the extras on to work absolutely great on my 7500, although $57 for a 64 MB DDR 7500 back in May was not that bad
Well I guess we could compare a V10 Viper and a V8 Ram then just to keep the numbers in line. However, I think it would be pretty safe to say that the Viper would not be able to pull as much as a Ram because the Viper isn't designed to pull like a Ram is. We can head over to Dodge.com and pull up a comparison sheet between a 2002 Viper GTS and a 2002 Ram 3500 SLT LWB and look at them together. And one of the most notable set of numbers I see is the weight of the vehicle itself. The Viper weighs in at 3,460 lb and the Ram weighs in at 5,979 lb - an extra 2,500 pounds. This weight is important in towing because although the Viper can get 490 lb*ft of torque, more than the 345 lb*ft from the Ram, it does not have as much weight to put that torque to the ground in order to pull something. It could prolly pull any small item like a jet ski, or mid size boat. But, if you try load up a 2,000 lb trailer with 8,000 lb of gravel, you aren't gonna get as far in the Viper as you will in the Ram.
Your comments on AMD are the only place where I could even see this type of case going. You can't sue Intel for selling a 1.4 GHz chip when in fact it runs at 1.4 GHz. It would be like suing Dodge because the V12 in a Viper can't pull the same amount of weight that the V10 in a Ram can, even though 12 is a higher number than 10 so you thought you should be able to pull more, it doesn't work that way. The other limits in the computers (RAM, HD, NB, SB, etc) and vehicles (engine literage, gear ratios, tire composition, etc) alter the performance of the selling numbers (GHz, Vxx) and have to be analyzed along with the selling numbers. This case should absolutely go nowhere in court unless you get some clueless judge up there.
However, AMD with its PR rating system is held to a different caliber because no longer are they selling their products based upon a particular specification of their product, but they are now selling their products based on an interprational 'performance' specification that is not a hardcoded part of the product. I could see people suing AMD if they bought an AMD 1600 and found it to be slower than their former Intel 1400 MHz computer. I would still think that a case along these lines would be completely absurd (why should we ever reward people's ignorance, suits should be reserved for cases where damage was actually done, or people were mislead to the point of damage in their life) - but, I could see it happening.
