A company out there, needs to pull a Lotus Elise/Exige in the face of Apple's "Jaguar, BMW, and Mercedes" approach. Am i talking about M$? Dell, HP, or Alienware? I'm not sure. But i'd like to see someone take a run at apple & give them a run for their money.
Arrr, oh, say, argh! can you see by the dawn's early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleamin'; Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched war so gallantly streamin'? No refuge could sa'e the hirelin' and sla'e From the terror o' flight or the gloom o' the gra'e: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wa'e O'er the land o' the free and the home o' the bra'e.

Occasionally posts like this make me wonder if the BSA, and the **AA's have PR people working on posting this kinda thing on/. Thievery? Piracy?... Please. The only real, evil pirates, are the people who have whole physical warehouses of warez, and DVD collections they sell on the streets of 3rd world nations and elsewhere, sometimes a lot closer to home than you might expect.
The problem here is that the dumb, psychologically malnourished, potentially undereducated, masses don't care. And disturbingly, don't want to LEARN. They care about what media file format their porn comes in (wmv anyone?)....and whatever app will let them use myspace. Do they have any idea about how badly designed soooooo many myspace layouts are? No. The masses who are still using win98,... and winxp pre-sp2 on Dell & HP all-in-one integrated graphic chip, no you can't take your harddrive out because we've screwed it into the case and designed the case so it has to be CUT OPEN with a metal cutting instrument, if you want to replace the dead in 6months drive.. don't bloody care.
computers are becoming like commodities, like cars. and the masses don't care how they precisely work. They barely even care if their cars are lemons.. if their SUV's are death traps. The environment? feel good fuzzy stuff? yeah. right. as if...
they don't even mind taking in their computers every 3-6 months to be fixed. re-formatted, re-worked.. whatever. like an oil change or needless repair at some shoddy garage that takes advantage of its clients making up work orders for parts that don't need replacement... but still the masses pay for it. they ARE WILLING to pay for it.
It's not the late 70's & early 80's boys.. in this new century people just want it to work...for a while. Repairs and check ups are just part and parcel of the new game. And the ignorant masses don't care. And they don't want to learn about this stuff.
don't get me wrong, i think things are pretty darn fsck'd up.. but eh. C'est la vie./rant
A bit under a year ago, i picked up a Razer Diamonback. I wanted something with many buttons and high resolution. I was tired of trackballs and using el-cheap-o 5$ mice that had trouble with precision or always needed to have their moving underside-ball cleaned. It also had to be comfortable. The mouse wound up coming with a LAN pouch that i've actually used regularly given that i use this mouse with a Powerbook and take it everywhere when i travel. I don't know about non-tangle cables. On average I treat my cables respectfully and almost obsessively make it a point to neatly tie them up when transporting devices so as to avoid tangles and other sorts of negative wear & tear.
I think the colors of their mice as well as the glowing is a bit annoying, particularly when watching a movie on screen with the lights out. But i understand it keeps the gamers happy, or perhaps the marketing folks? Either way at worst i just put a cloth over it and watch my movie in peace.
On resolution and number of buttons: I think this one's pretty straightforward: 7 buttons are nice. 3 Up top including a scroll wheel that does have notches that will hold. None of this smooth wheel scroll without deviation that are a pain in FPS games when selecting items. The 7 buttons are nice as they work well with Expose when configured in preferences. I doubt i'm the kind of person that can tell the difference between 2000 dpi and 1600 dpi versus 800 dpi in a mouse. However i can say that this mouse is a world of positive difference from an MS trackball and cheap 3 button no-scroll wheel no-name types i've used in the past on other computers.
The size of the buttons, location of the buttons, and over all size of the mouse are the sorts of things that are very user specific. It fits my hand which i like to think is neither too large, nor too petite. There was a brief period of a few hours where i did have to get used to the buttons located on the sides of the mouse. I've also noted the same with others who try to use my mouse. At first there's a bit of disorientation after accidentally setting off Expose or using the side buttons inadvertently.
I like the mouse for use with photoshop and apps like Aperture that regularly span multiple screens. In the occasional games i do play i've also found it to be a pleasurable mousing experience. Precise, quick and comfortable. Razer does make an awful lot of fuss over the numerical specifications detailing out how 1337 it's mice are and the one thing that sticks out in my mind is: The thing about high resolution and fast travel time is not that you need it all the time, but over brief periods of time to traverse from one high res monitor to another on spanned screen real-estate, or want to be able to reliably click on specific pixels in a scene or displayed image the 1st time and not the second without having to zoom in, or in cases where the interface is a bit fiddly and it's just easier to have a high res mouse do the job.
As for this review? It looks like Razer's released just another bottom of their product line mouse with partially trimmed down features and attempted to orient this new mouse to mmo/rts gamers. The review wasn't all that inspiring and is laced to the brim with advertisements. Navigation of the site is a pain and i had to stare at the first page for about a minute to realize there were 4 or so more pages of review content with NEXT and page number links to click on near the end of the 2nd paragraph.
In closing i don't particularly understand a lot of the negative feedback on this article in regards to cheap quality of Razer mice. As far as i'm concerned, they're a bit expensive, but of good quality if they fit your hand and personal sense of preferred ergonomics. I've never had my mouse break / cease working.. or act negatively unless you count the glowing.
I'm surprised this issue hasn't been mentioned more. After bit-torrent use as the predominant use of internet resources... adult content, is one of the THE largest internet interests.
Yet what formats are adult content published in online ?: Still images, Video*, and Text.
Yes there are Console, PC games, and online attempts to create virtual adult content, but typically they are hampered by technological limitations and general scarcity. Or they are hidden (due to politics, morality police, etc.) and require significant effort to access (Hot coffee), for limited content.
When the developmental tools become easily accessible for the masses (people at home & professional developers) to create 3D, rendered content that is on average on par with SD video quality, of an adult or sexually themed nature, and people are able to interact with one another (or simply AI's) with avatars whose appearances are convincingly organic, one would think there will be a dramatic increase in the overall adoption of a 3D virtual web, for purposes above and beyond mere adult/sexual interests.
*Do a search for "Virtual Sex" in your favorite p2p application. The materials found when reviewed have an interesting use of camera and suggested viewer relationship with the content. Yes it is video, - but it is an interesting side note amidst the issue of virtual adult content.
Actual question, - How many people who happen to work for Google also contribute and work on Firefox in their free time, and to what extent do they contribute?
I actually re-started my/. account having sorta got tired of/. for a while. Later i found digg & started watching diggnation for amusement value. I thought Kevin was kinda cute, but after a while settled into the realization that Alex is a touch more grounded & down to earth about things ( i watch the show for his views and thoughts these days). Voice of reason. Not unlike slashdot in these social news site communities.
I've also cut back on my digg.com visiting and have as well noted an over all quality increase in features and content of the slashdot site.
Both sites are likely imperfect, but i think if anything, the competition has seemingly sharpened the edge of slashdot to a point where it's getting rather nifty. Who ever's responsible for this, great stuff.:)
So i suppose it's a bad idea to even murmer a question about prospective battery life of a G5 portable vs the legendary stories of 12" ibooks with alledged 5.something hours in a regular day of use?
