It never fails, the interface is usable by the lady, and it was a breeze to install.
I currently have a TiVo, which my wife loves, but I've been looking for a long time for a more integrated solution that can play media from my computer. However, all the current component solutions suck or aren't particularly user friendly. Then I was over at my friends' house one night with my wife and he had his MCE machine up and running. While playing with it, my wife exclaimed "Ooh, I want one of these". That was when I knew I'd found what I was looking for. I'm still getting it built, but look forward to the nicely laid out interface and quality feature set. And, of course, the fact that I won't have to sit with my wife for hours trying to explain how to use it.

Me? I don't like having my PDA and phone as a single unit. I don't like overly large cell phones, and sometimes find myself needing to use a PDA while talking on the phone... so unless you have a speaker phone built in, it can be rather difficult.
I have the Treo 650, which has bluetooth built into it. If you have a bluetooth headset, you can use all the PDA functions while on a call. I've found it useful for being able to add appointments to my schedule while I'm on the phone. Or one time, my wife was lost and called me for directions. I was able to pull up my mapping program and find out where she was and give her directions, all without hanging up the phone.

  14. New Strategy on The Downward Spiral of Music Retailing · · Score: 4, Insightful

The real problem is that nobody in the industry is trying to adapt to all the changes that have come about in the past few years. The RIAA has spent all its effort trying to stop P2P sites rather than finding an alternative to lure consumers back to buying.

And while all this was going on, the retailers were just sitting on their butts not doing anything. What the CD retailers should have done was band together and get on the RIAA's back about coming up with a better product that would bring back consumers to CD purchasing.

The retailers will always have the hardcore music listeners who will continue to buy CDs no matter what. They are the people keeping those businesses around at least for a little while longer. Unfortunately, the average CD buyer has been swayed by P2P sites, being satisfied with the quality of the files they get from them.

So, what the retailers (and RIAA) should be doing is developing new incentives for people to go back to CDs (or another media). Why not add cool features (like they've been experimenting with) such as bonus content, exclusive concert ticket buying rights, etc.? Or, they should really push the DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD formats (preferably picking one as the standard), which offer far superior sound to MP3s.

Perhaps it is too late. Perhaps the procrastination has killed the CD industry. I hope not, personally, because I highly prefer a physical product to MP3s.

In fact, I've seen several people get ticketed by the police for violating that law.

Back when I was in high school, I was ticketed for not only riding my bike on the sidewalk, but also crossing in the middle of the street and riding on the wrong side of the street. I thought it was stupid...after all, everybody did it. In fact, my friend got the same ticket about 10 minutes after I did.

Of course, I later found out (when I asked another cop) that the cop who ticketed me was such an asshole that he had actually ticketed his own mom!

  17. Re:I hope they banned bikes on their sidewalks too on Segway Banned In San Francisco · · Score: 4, Insightful

The Segways should have to adhere to the same rules that bikes do. Bikes aren't allowed on the sidewalk either. They have to follow many of the laws that cars do. This includes riding in the street, going with the flow of traffic. So, why can't the Segways use the bike lane (or curb area) too?

  23. Webcasters were hoping for a percentage rate on Copyright Office Publishes Final Webcasting Rates · · Score: 4, Insightful

The problem with this rate is that it's still based on the number of songs the station broadcasts. Most webcasters were hoping for a rate based on a percentage of their revenue. But, this was rejected.

So, even with this reduced rate, we're still going to see almost all webcasters go out of business. It's even going to be hard for the big businesses. I work for a large internet radio company, and I was just told by our exec in charge of working with the RIAA that our rates would probably go up about $500,000-600,000/yr from our current rate. He said one reason is because even if a user skips a song, it still counts as a play.
