I know what you mean. I've had opera open now for about 20 minutes and its already taken up 97 megs of memory space, after viewing a png w/ quicktime embeded (probably the biggest culprit), and a few webpages. But it runs like it only takes 8 megs. And its not like I can't spare the RAM. Opera deserves every byte for it is such an awesome browser.
With all this talk about comparing MAC addresses and changing them or buying new cards, its easy to overloook to obvious method of circumventing the program...
Take the NIC out of the computer (who needs a network anyways?) and play over dialup!
But what you're forgetting is that it'll increase linux' popularity, particularly amongst those who play games in windows. If they do switch, that means more linux gamers and more consumers willing to pay and play.
Either I'm still going to buy a copy when it comes out. Linux could be an awesome gaming platform.
I have an email forwarding setup so one can easily e-mail an address rather than knowing my phone number and provider. There is no way to know that its an SMS address. What kind of reward/compensation can i look forward to when i do start receiving spam? Is it even covered? I already get a newsletter from the email fwding provider that i don't want, and there is no way to have myself removed since the email gets cropped with the 160 char limit.
Since it is such a localized area, perhaps billboards or other signs might be better. I'm not sure how you could profit from these, but they are harder to ignore and hit more than just your users.
Wouldn't SMS be the best choice for an overloaded network anyways? It seems that you would only need a few chunks of time to send the message, not the huge allotment required by vocal communications. What's the ratio of sms messages to a voice call? I imagine it would be something like 10 sms messages = 1 second of voice. Would it be a good idea to SMS family in case of a disaster, a la 9/11?
Here's the text from Amazon: Greetings from Amazon.com.
You recently received an e-mail from us regarding the Segway Human Transporter (also known as "Ginger" or "IT"). This e-mail was sent accidentally by an automated system and the information in it is incorrect.
In fact, there is no new information on Segway's availability. Consumer versions of Segway Human Transporters are currently being piloted in various communities throughout the U.S. The Segway HT is expected to be released to the general consumer market in 2003.
We apologize for the confusion. We will keep your e-mail address on our list of customers who wish to be notified about this item.

I wonder how effective a live version of this would be? Say you had the device read your mind and a computer turns it into "music" in real-time, then plays it back through headphones. You would be hearing your own thoughts. Would you fall asleep faster? Halucinate? No effect at all? Has their been any research to see if we can understand raw brainwaves, even if they are our own? Say we record a thoughts with music just like the article, then hear it, would we jump to what we thinking about during the recording? Would it begin an feedback loop? 10 Think a thought 20 Hear that thought 30 Think about heard thought 40 Goto 20?
It is just for that reason that I'm pushing for housing developments in my small rural town. I have no options for broadband, so my only hope is a population increase to bring the attention towards us. I do like the small town feeling, but broadband is essential.
The demographics for my town are upper-middle class folk who work for hi-tech firms, such as Intel, HP, and Oracle, but unless you live in suburbia, you're out of options.
The quality of the SBC phone lines equate to galvanized barbed wire. Dialup sucks, ISDN is ultra-pricey, but pennys compared to a T1 drop. With all the trees and hills, wireless is not an option. And with the distance between houses, a meshed wireless network won't work either. Last-mile is a huge problem for me and many Americans.
If anyone else has other ideas on how I can get broadband, It'd be much appreciated.
My favorite 3d world is Cybertown. Easily programmable, flexible worlds, personal community, the works. But the best part is v2.0 Cybertown NextGeneration with a truely seamless world.

wouldn't a battle bot capable of social engineering the judges be a great thing?
That reminds me of a beer commercial where the bot opens a fridge full of ice-cold booze, the opposition manuevers their bot into position to grab the beer and bring it back, and suddenly the beer-bearing fridge pulls out a hammer from behind and whacks the other bot to smitherings.
All right Chimp, I'll see you there. I don't know how I'll manage security at the moment, but something will strike me, be it an idea, security, or Frat boys. Who's novel idea was it to host the Sacremento Meetup in a bar?
in case you were wondering, much like I was, John Romero's very attractive GF is the famous Killcreek (who i always thought was a dude). Her real name is Stevie Case. Here's an interesting interview with her.
This sort of reminds me of the plans to put missle launchers on hundreds of miles of track circling the midwest during the cold war so the Soviets couldn't take out our defense systems.
Maybe these plants will miss the rolling blackouts.
Great, now how are low budget movies going to fake a stack of 50 orange colored hundred dollar bills when all they can afford is 50 blue one dollar bills?
its ironic that this movie came out shortly before the supreme court's ruling today. If you listen carefully, they use an altered version of the pledge of allegiance, unfortunatly, I don't remember it off hand.
Ford Perfect couldn't get a ride for fifteen years my arse... obviously he wasn't trying... at the very least he could have visited scotland for a week.

Anyone with a crapload of money can do this sorta stuff.
But not everyone who has a "crap load of money" wants to do this sort of thing. That is what makes her Geek.
Besides, Catherine is paying you/us to wire this for her.
You want to keep buying your gadgets and food?

Its always amazed me how computer power cables (the ones that go from the wall to power supply) are engineered so perfectly.
If they didn't have that black block of plastic with female connectors and instead used male connectors, imagine the weapon possibilities!
Everyone knows that the e is dead and i is in... this year's buzzword is iTerrorist.
Great! Maybe now I'll be able to find my cordless phone.
Not like it maters; no one calls me anyways.
