My company was using a touch screen add-on for Macintosh's back in the early 90's to allow them to be put in Kiosks so we could hide the keyboard/mouses. It was a simple film you put on the monitor and would act as a mouse. Despite this technology being available, I haven't seen any proliferation of touch screens in a box for people to use for their computers and laptops. How does MS come up with the idea that everyone wants this on their pc's/laptops?
I don't understand why this law was necessary. If I take my phone some where else, I will have to break my contract with the phone company or pay for two plans. If I cancel my plan, I pay a termination fee that results in the phone company getting their subsidized portion of the phone back (financially). Everyone walks away and calls it quits. The phone goes with me because I paid for it in full. Also, if the phone companies all have policies allowing you to go out of the country and arrange to swap your SIMS, again what was the point? Where is the damage being done if I should unlock my phone?
If we are going to have DCMA protection of copyrighted software./firmware, it should be aimed at situations where replication of a copyright material is being made.
Is it just the coding? Does he neglect to say hi or bye. When you are talking to him about something, does he just go back to work without giving you feedback because he is really busy. Does he skip using an IDE environment because he can just read and compile the code into an app. He's totally happy to do this over and over.
Does his odd ball brain make him superior at some tasks? Can he juggle 15 projects at once? Can he stay nose to the grindstone for 10 hours with a 30 minute lunch? Does he eat the same thing every day for lunch?
I'm describing my co-worker. Same coding issues. Same lack of interest in anything he doesn't write. But he is a valuable member anyways because he keeps things going in the old world while we write a new platform. Originally, he totally pissed me off, but I realized my manager understood my points and my desires to have a better organized team and environment. At the same time he explained he was working against the gun to reach milestones for our mid size firm.
Now i just understand this guy better and focus my attention on the more average personalities on my team that need a good code review or the benefits of my experience and talents.
I really agree with this. Especially that last statement. It's the manager's job to handle this and fix it. If he can't see the problem or doesn't at least discuss why he would permit it (perhaps business reasons that are valid), then you are in the wrong place. If he goes, yes i know, I want to fix it, but we have to do it my way as the problem employee is actually valuable, then you have to trust in him to do it.
It's all good until he leaves the firm. Then you guys are fscked! At minimum when you try to do maintenance or enhancements you will havfe to invest a lot of time and energy. Ok, so he wrote a highly optimized piece of code that works and makes money. That is awesome. Some people are brilliant at this stuff. But nothing stops him from going back after the fact and putting his thoughts in to make it easier to undertand the code. Maybe he can't do anything he is not immediately interested in?
environmental chemicals, food additives, air pollution, genetics.. the question to ask is what and why it's an epidemic. What is an epidemic? Is is obesity, lack of energy, lowered IQ, metabolic disorders? It's easy to say just exercise and control the portions but that is downstream and doesn't eliminate what is causing the situation to spiral out of control in the first place. Not just at the moment but a whole life time of wiping your ass with bleached toilet paper (for example):)
Here's a really good layman's article at the Economist mag on this topic.. I read it back in August and haven't stopped thinking about it every time I see someone who is obese but still is chowing down in defiance of his own situation.
Maybe it's not Windows 8 that is the issue. Maybe it's the technology. Mouse/keyboard/screen/windows.. nothing new.. When it comes to laptops... I'm bored. Nothing has changed in forever. I go to Best Buy and look around for something really new and interesting.. Oh look.. more laptops.. Touch screens? We were doing that on Macs back in the 90's with a cheap kit. I have Window's 8 on my 3 year old laptop and mostly I just hit escape to get back to Windows 7 look and feel, and do what I've been doing all along. But it's all boring.. really.. now my new Galaxy Note II phone, that's a little more interesting.. I can talk to it, touch it, shake it, you can smell the innovation in it!
Here is an interesting article on Gut Bacteria in the Economist.. Autism is mentioned as well.. worth a good read..

You mean the free 3g signal or the non-existent LTE signal? Eventually I hope that Sprint's declaration that they rolled LTE out in Dallas will actually become a reality. Look at their map! It's everywhere.. but if you drive around, it's nowhere:) Vaporware! But that doesn't stop them from selling you a phone and telling you that you will have LTE service. So bully for you that you have unlimited but I suspect when they really handle a LTE work load for their customers, that will go away..

I have an app that runs windows on my phone. I wonder if I can run Socket in there? Wouldn't that be the bomb?
Oh I know why he is what he is! It's BACTERIA!
