I'm in Boston. I work in the 128 region (Burlington specifically). All of my friends who work just a little further out (west of 495, southern NH, etc.) refuse to listen to me griping about salary, because jobs in the 128 region pay LOTS more than those just 20 miles further out. Seriously. Even living in Boston, I make double what the average family of 4 IN BOSTON makes. I'm definitely getting the impression that the cost of living may be high, but the salaries pretty much make it irrelevant.
Lots of companies are doing this now. I work in Windows development (sorry, gotta pay the bills...) and have three machines currently sitting in my office. Once is a Compaq: No Windows CD, full system-restore CD only. One is an old NEC (5 years old, no less!) with no WIndows CD, a full system-restore CD (with Win95) only. The third is a Gateway laptop with - glory be! - A real live WIndows 98 CD! Two out of three do not come with a Windows CD, however the NEC does have an MS-Bob CD which is an acceptable substitute for the AOL crowd.
If more distro's supplied these "live eval" type CD's, it would certainly do nothing but help Linux in the long run. How many people have you heard of who say they'd like to try "that Linux thing" but are afraid of messing up their computers, or have heard too many installation horror stories?
One final interesting tidbit: The "Happy Birthday to You" song (lyrics and melody together) are still under copyright protection, so every time you hear them sung on TV or radio, for example, royalties are being paid to the publisher (Warner Chapel, in the US).
Nope, wasn't a joke. I think I'm thinking of something other than Minix though, that just doesn't sound right. I remember hearing SOMEWHERE (problem is I can't remember where) that MacOS (prior to OS X) was based on some OS with a Unix-like kernel. But, as I said, I'm completely Mac-ignorant and must have fallen for some bad info.
Despite the fact that the Mac and Unix are essentially polar opposites
I'm completely Mac-ignorant, so excuse me if I'm incorrect, but I was under the impression that MacOS was initially based on Minix, and still was. Is this incorrect?
I don't know that I'd say MS suffers from Not-Invented-Here. DOS and Internet Exploder leap to mind as counter-examples. They seem more than willing to sell something they bought or borrowed, as long as they can make a profit on it. I think they're pissed that Bungie isn't using the product they sell, and is in fact using the direct competition. I don't think NIH plays a role.
Nifty idea, but what happens when there's only one person left, and they sell, and are left with $100,000 profit because the house was in San Fran and doubled in value in 5 years? Isn't this going to piss off the others who bailed out and got their investment seed back, but no interest? Or do we not care since they're in Borneo?
Apple's advertising agency is threatening several publications carrying Apple ads to stop printing Apple rumours
Perhaps I misunderstood. I took "publications" to mean ANY media outlet that printed rumors, such as MacWeek (does that magazine still exist?), etc. So if John C. Dvorak prints an Apple rumor in his "Inside Track" column in PC Magazine (what a terrible magazine that is, but that's a whole different issue), Apple would then refuse to run ads in PC Magazine (yup, I have occasionally seen Apple ads in that rag).
I want this so that I can inject it into my cat, then stick the cat in bed with my mother-in-law when she "drops by" for her two-week visits. Perhaps if she thinks my house is haunted by a cat she'll stay the hell away.
I LOVE when they ask for a postal code. Sometimes I respond with "90210" and insist I'm serious, but I especially enjoy responding with something like "7". The look on the cashier's face when you respond with one or two digits is damn near priceless.
I may agree with the general sentiment more or less, but seriously, dude... DECAF.
I dunno about that...

Rise and shine, get out of bed and I'm a war machine again. -Name that song for 20 points.
"Switchblade Knife", Pro-Pain
Where's my 20 points?
You can get the number - *69 them and it will appear on your next telephone bill.

.katz? Then we could filter him as easily as .sex!
Who owns the rights to "Happy Birthday?"

Thanks for the info...

Batman will Trepan himself at the end of this movie?

Nothing, I repeat NOTHING, beats Balvenie. If you're strapped for cash, Cardhu isn't bad.
How subliminable.

In order to stop the rumors, Apple will stop advertising? Great! That's a fantastic busniess plan!
The analogy to Anakin becoming more and more machine is amazing, huh?
Jon Katz? Is that you?
Not a problem anymore - I heard they found him dead in New York City last night.
I wholeheartedly agree. If we want to continue to get the level of service we've come to expect from Google, they're going to need to get some income.
P.S.: Anyone know where I can get a copy of Junkbuster?
One of my favorite bits ever from The Onion was a mock-up TV schedule. The show that was playing on Sci-Fi in that schedule was "Space: 1972".

does star wars meets nine months scare anyone else ?
Sure, but "Star Wars" meets "9 1/2 Weeks" sounds pretty damn good.
