Patents are an evil and savor in their own The protect companies who spend millions in research from another company coming along and just basically stealing all the work put into a project. On the other hand they are the cause of our large drug prices and crazy licensing agreements (at times). Some technology should just not be patented but where that line is would be nearly impossible to draw. There should be something to stop companies from patenting products they don't even on building or a way for patents to be turned over once they realize the patient is crazy. (There most likely is a process for this but it doesn't seam to work very well) The bottom line is someone will always try to get around them or use them to their advantage... its just the human way

  5. Had the dream job, didn't then did on How to Do What You Love · · Score: 1

I had a job I really loved about 4 years ago but due to family pressing me into thinking I should be making more money and having a "better job" I left the position and went to a different job. I hated the job and while I was making 35-40% more I was no more happy and in fact was more in debt because I was spending more. One day I finally had it and called up my old company was asked if they had any positions open... I'm sitting back at the old company right now happy as can be and get this I ended up getting a rather nice pay raise and am at pretty much the same level as with the job I hated. Many people think work is just that work. You go and do your time no matter how bad it is. I just cann't do that life is too short to spent 9-5 five days a week doing something you don't enjoy. My advise to you little ones is at least try your fun jobs first if it doesn't work out at least you tried... I always wanted to be a forest ranger when I was younger so one summer I worked for the parks and quickly realized this dream wasn't so dreamy. I also love working on my jeep so while in univeristy I worked for the local 4x4 parts shop. Love it but realized unless I owned the store it really wasn't the same. Point being try things... You are going to have many jobs in your life and some will suck and others will feel like they are not even work.

  6. Its all because of the idiots.. on Domain Name Sold for Millions · · Score: 2, Insightful

The funny thing is it totally makes sense for it to cost that amount... Think of how many 14 year old males and idiot computer users must type in sex.com. A part of business not many people like to admit but really does sell is selling to idiots. The sex industry is a billion dollar industry and while most of it is very legit the people making the big money is the damn reseller sites that don't even host their own adult content. They just link to others so by owning a site like sex.com you could make millions a year. Someone made reference however to how Google and others are now really changing the way URLs work and I have to agree. While sex.com is still a great buy I think the idiot who type in sex.com in their URL window will also be the type to put stupid stuff in Google and get back the same results. Now this is where google and other can are are helping. Back in the day you searched anything in a search engine and half the sites where either mislabeled or porn. I really do not find this much anymore and even if you type in sex you get 95% of the site returned to be heath sites. I applaud Google for this and while I'm not one for censorship or hiding porn I think this move is one for the good. As I had people making money off the dumb (or jealous..)

Well said! This to me is a huge new feature for Windows but I still would like to see it work... Wonder how it really effects other services currently running or if its just a quick reboot really. If a now able to upgrade some software on a server and not have to wait for a maintence window to reboot this is a huge advantage. Trying to use the new feature might be hard for some of us IT guys to get past some old school managers who will still want it done in a maintence window but what they don't know doesn't hurt them. Everyone can compair this to unix all they want but it is a different type of OS. I perfer unix but you have to use windows for some software and we can knock it for all we want but i must say i find my windows server to be just easier in general. Easier to work on, more reliable, not as secure but great for in our LAN.

  11. Already being done... on Books in Beta Form · · Score: 1

I work for a technical doc company that produces documentation for a number of companies... We do things a little different since most our products are offered free to go along with hardware. I'm not an author as you can tell by my spelling but I do work on the production / management side of things so I do see this from a different view. We release all our Beta docs to registered users (people who have the hardware) to go over the content. This allows them to get a sneakpeak at the hardware and software before it is even released and the information we get back from them is way way better than we used to get from the hardware teams. You have to make sure you have a good beta program setup though as some people just take the material and you never hear back from them. We do sell some of our books in print form but nearly every book is also offered off our website in PDF for free download. (However free mostly just because you have a hardware license) These online docs are upgraded on the fly and allow for books to always be kept up to date. Three years ago everyone wanted the printed materials but these days we hardly print a thing because people are realizing they get the most up to date materials by downloading them. With PDA, laptops, etc most people are just grabbing the latest versions using them and then just erase the file until he next time they need it. I was a student as well and agree with people who are saying its annoying when text books chance editions. I think we are going to see that changing in the future.. Publishers are going to start offering licenses to their books online. So you can buy a license and can always get the latest version for free. It will not be in print form but the publishing companies are starting to see there is profit in non-printable formats. I'll tell you too working on the production side of things it is so much nicer to just throw a PDF on a server than send to a printer. Yes people might pirate them but that's why they need to give added features. A few places already offer really great online quizzes that go with their printed materials and offer updated versions of their printed materials on the web. To sum it up beta testing with the public is great for book that don't have huge value themselves. But I'd never put one of our books out for public beta if we are going to turn around and sell it for a few thousand..

This has been great for coffee shops and people travelling in the city because they are getting free internet when before they would have to pay for it. Personally I think this is something more citys should be thinking about. We are a small city but if I'm told they money created by local bussiness because of this has pretty much paid for the system.

Oh my god this is just what I need! Wonder how I could get my girlfriend to wear it without noticing!! ok all joking aside... Personally I'm not a huge fan of these tracking devices however it can be really useful. That the place I work you have to enter in passcodes to enter into different areas of the building. If I really need to find someone and if it so happens they might be in an area that cell phones and pagers aren't allowed I can track them down using this system. Ok tracking how long a student is sitting on the throne is alittle much but I could see this being useful in just even tracking all the enteries. This way at least you know a student is within your building. While this seams little crazy to me for highschool students what about elementry school kids. If I was a parent I'd feel alittle saver knowing that if my kid asked to use the bathroom and then walked out the front door a little alarm would go off in the head office. But seriously where can I get one for my girlfriend!

I understand not having hands on in many degrees even computer science however a degree like electrical engineering or mine Forestry Engineering it is key to know what you are doing before you get out there. I can know all the theory in the world about sexing plants but until you actually do it you really know nothing.

MIT is known as the brain school but I think you are going to see in a few years from now people not wanting there grads because they only seam to know theory. I was in a theory degree once the school I was going too was 100% theory and it was a computer science degree.. I at the time worked at a helpdesk for the school and I had a grad student come up and ask me what does ftp'ing a file mean.. A grad computer science student doesn't know what ftp is...

My point is hands on is the way to go you learn much much more about what your job really is going to be and really prepairs you for what you are going to be doing in the real world... After all we can all look up formulias in a book but not all us can weld for the first time.
