Obviously you don't believe in common sense then. I believe at a certain point you are responsible for being able to use logic and willpower to make decisions. I don't need a label on every sheet of glass warning me not to shove my face into it but your reasoning implies that such a warning is needed because I shouldn't be expected to figure that out on my own. Legally adults are pathetic infants who need to have their hands held forever.
If her son was so emotionally frail, isolated, and having problems with his epilepsy then why was she ignoring the huge amount of time he was spending playing the game? If it was so obvious that it was a problem now why wasn't it so obvious then? She sounds like she just threw up her hands and said "Let him do whatever he wants, I don't know what to do with him" then when something DID happen she immediately looks for scapegoats.
Sorry but my sympathy for her dissapears when she starts pointing a finger at others.
She doesn't need to subpeona Sony to find out why her son died. The details are incidential to the truth of the matter, that her son was isolated and depressed. You don't need to retain a lawyer to see that but you do need to remove your maternal blinders.
Unless you consider abusing yourself to www.mit-nudies.cs.edu to be programming related then I'd have to say no, programming tends to decrease performance.
I agree. It is like being a child, everything seemed wonderous and interesting when we were kids. Now that we've been around for a while a lot of it is old hat and we see the flaws in things we thought were so great back then. I look at the Saturday morning cartoons I used to watch as a kid and now think how awful they are (with the exception of classic Warner Bros).
Same goes for web sites. Being able to see a coffee pot in England, wow! Watching people in their homes, reading rants, wooo! But now seeing a coffee pot in England is as interesting as staring at a coffee pot and watching someone at home is as thrilling as watching an empty couch or someone shuffling around the kitchen. Websurfers have basically grown up.
I'm not going to waste my time on sites with countless broken links, horrible spelling/grammar, personal info "shakedowns" (you can't see anything unless you register), endless popup ads, font fetishes, demanding you download some plug-in, or a total lack of original material or even a useful link list. Plus, if you expect $ it had better be good.
I guess I've gotten a lot pickier about what I consider interesting.
This is a news site and the Oscars is still considered big news by many people (not me) so it makes sense that it'd be on slashdot.
As long as only one award is given out for best whatever and so much $ is on the line a lot of deserving (and sometimes better) movies/actors will not win.
Doesn't that violate the 13th amendment against slavery? Since they are forcing you to hand over personal work without compensation that sounds pretty close.

How much juice will a cubic meter of the stuff use per degree celsius? Would widespread use of this concrete create a major spike in energy consumption or would it be more efficient than current heating methods. I, for one, am sick of seeing power being wasted and never ending power generator construction.
I wonder if they only finally leave you alone once they've squeezed every damn cent out of you or do they then sell the list to the Red Cross to get your blood also?
It is news when it is being bandied about in the mainstream press. That is what frequently gets the ball rolling in board rooms, congress, etc. So it is legitimate news.
Odds are if you are laid off it will have nothing to do with your websurfing but more to do with how upper management perceives your cost vs value to the company (usually as a unit). I know our company let go a number of contractors, it had nothing to do with their performance, only a need to cut costs.
I can't count the number of times I've gotten an undocumented Oracle error code or needed help on a specific problem and found it within 10 minutes on the web (thanks Google). If I didn't have free access to the web at work my employer and I would've missed a number of deadlines.
It seems like any troll with a keyboard can throw stones at Katz. Bitch all you want but how about actually COMMENTING ON THE SUBJECT MATTER INSTEAD OF THE AUTHOR? What a concept!

"Won't someone PLEASE think of the children!"

Sorry, it is hard to laugh while you are beating the same joke to death.

Usenet is the worst Spam swamp on the net. It has become virtually unreadable unless it is moderated.

It could be worse, it could be like the Grammys where Metallica lost in the best heavy metal category to Jethro Tull.
Won't McDonalds sue NASA for infringing on their secret for hamburger patty production now?
Everything tastes like chicken!
So it should become self-aware some time soon? If my name was Sarah Connor I'd start running now.

And I bet you never abuse the public's roads by speeding?
Guess some of the Puritans got off the boat late.

Why don't they just ban those pesky employees? Problem solved!
Sorry if I came off sounding as if I was knocking the midwest, it was more of a defense of the NE.
We already have augmented reality devices, it is called "beer". It makes every woman look good and every guy your best friend/enemy.

If you don't read the manual for your new farm equipment you might lose a limb. Strong reason to not do "trial and error".
