The news shows are the worst. I think it's Dateline that is top of the cake.

You can watch the last 5 minutes of an hour long episode and not miss a thing. I think they are afraid of losing someone that just changed to their channel.

But often, even if I find a story interesting, I'm changing to something else after a couple commercial breaks when they tell me the whole back story for a third time.

I thought I already replied here, but it seems lost. If two replies show up, then someone found it.

mythcommflag comes with the standard MythTV install. It runs as a separate process but the make for mythtv makes mythcommflag too.

myth's commercial flagging is modular, so you could in theory replace the built in comm flagger with a differenet one. But the built in one works pretty good. I've had no reason to change it.

It does do better on some shows than others, and sometimes marks a commercial in a weird place. But for the most part it is accurate and helpful.

I have a 46" HD DLP TV. Standard DVD's look pretty good on that and I'm happy with them. HDTV looks really good, but a good DVD is pretty good.

I also have a projector that shoots onto about a 96" screen. Here the DVD resultion is lacking and I am pretty excited about HD DVD's. Though I'm not as excited about having to run a new cable through my ceiling due to the stupid HDMI requirement. If HDMI is the only sticking point I'll probably bow and give in. If they have stupid DRM crap that only lets you use one player then that is a different story.

If I just had my TV, I would be slow to upgrade to HD DVD's. With the projector it's a different story.

I have Myth and enjoy it. My family enjoys it too.

I really like Myth for the network and multiple tuner features. I also like the ability to upgrade. I'm thinking of getting an OTA HD card soon, which won't render the rest of my system worthless. Can't do that with a Tivo. You'd end up with two Tivo's.

That being said I haven't recommended it to anyone I work with, and I work in the IT dept, but I'm the only Linux guy of the group. I tell them I really like it though, but there is a time investment.

I tell them to get a Tivo or something that "just works". It's cheaper if it has everything you want, and you don't have to mess with it.

The worse thing about MythTv is if it fails to record (very very rarely) then my wife and family blame me. With Tivo they have a company to blame :)

*** Usually the failure to record is disk full, which is our fault cause we set it not to autoexpire anything..
