I think you'll find that to some extents numbers (1) and (3) are because of (2). I, among the vast majority of people who have used Steam, have found it to be absolutely ridiculously poor.
I find it surprising that Valve would risk Half Life 2's early reputation and hype by the smaller side issues which, frankly, the royalties from HL2 will fund.
And Microsoft will be happy. Thanks to the lack of competition, It means a lot more people will be buying the PC version of Halo when that comes out in a couple of weeks! (indeed, I'm surprised that you slashdotters haven't gone for that tin-foil-hat conspiracy)
There I was, a former mutant with daggers in my knuckles, hacking a 128-bit encryption system, and then this lady started giving me a BJ whilst another guy had a gun to my head. I just about managed it in time, despite distractions.
I think Sean O'Keefe is already on Mars, after all, he thinks he's having a conversation with the teleportation expert from Star Trek, Miles O'Brien, eh?
OK, so when Microsoft slots in a similar service into Media Player and it automatically swallows the entire market because it is the default media player, will you also be applauding its "all-in-one package"?
In the past week, this date has just come out of nowhere and is now generally accepted as the release date. Not that long ago, there was an interview with someone at id that suggested the engine was complete and it was just down to finalising level design.
It wouldn't surprise me if HL2 has been a factor here. Everyone was shocked at the E3 debut of Half Life 2, and full, full credit to Valve. Over the past 2 years especially, Valve have taken all the criticism of "you're just happy to sit on the laurels of Half Life you lazy b's", and sat back and blown everyone away when it mattered.
Certainly some aspects of the Doom 3 engine seem from reports awful in comparison to HL2's engine - poorer scaling in terms of system spec, Environment manipulation (which HL2 blew everyone away with at E3 but is apparently very poor in the current Doom 3 engine) and a plethora more effect/shader programs than Doom 3.
The competition is good, because its a chance to force id's hand to play catch up. For too long, id and Carmack have sat in almost demi-God mode over the PC games market with the Doom 3 hype and you have to wonder if maybe they have got a little complacent.
Oh, and a final issue, purely to play Devil's Advocate, I understand Half Life 2 uses DirectX and some might suggest that it is the reason why HL2 apparently is more scalable and achieves more effects more easily across many performance levels. Could HL2's apparent conquering of Doom 3 at the moment be the defining moment of DirectX's conquering of OpenGL?
possibly because they are doing some neat tricks with their drivers which they have spent a lot of time and money to develop and don't want to just hand over said secrets to their rivals?
It seriously needs to be packaged as an MSI installer, preferably with a Transform creator so that the install can be customised as much as possible. To create a custom MS Office install for the entire enterprise takes 15 minutes, OpenOffice can take days to repackage...
How does 2. work? The problem with 2. is that the license will end up being stricter and effectively Closed Source. Otherwise, what is to stop Buyer's direct competitor using it for $0, as opposed to $XXXX?
For those hacking the X-Box, here's the challenge: Prove you aren't doing this just to one-up Microsoft and you truly believe that you should be able to do whatever you want with the hardware and the software. How to prove it?
Challenge 1 - Get an Apple G3 or G4 or G5 to boot Windows XP
I think its a tad disingenuous to blame Microsoft for the problems that Venture Capital firms are having. Its more to do with them pouring all their money into ridiculous business ideas like web sites which could never make any money and the sort. The last people that deserve any help from anyone in IT, is Venture Capital firms.

Don't be daft. If you are a professional, there is no "them" and "us". If you are unable to look at all solutions in terms of their technological prowess, as opposed to engineering some ludicrous political ambition about being "us, not them", then no one should value your opinion in an IT decision of the sort of magnitude of which Groupware product to use.
Staff at a small computer conference yesterday were expressing "shock and dismay" at the poor performance of Wednesday's lunch.
Local area Dinnerlady, Mavis Angolis, 58, exclaimed, "I don't understand it. It was full Monday and Tuesday but today its less than full". Rumors have been flying about the site about the possible explanation for the failure to fill every seat in the small canteen. Some cite a internet post on popular IT News site, slashdot, as the cause. However, others have their own theory.
Conference attendee, Mitch Buchanan, 28, echoed many others opinion: "man, they are serving meat loaf again! I got sandwiches today instead"
That isn't an analysis, that's ridiculous, retarded, ill-thoughtout biased opinion. For slashdot to post that article as analysis is a new low for the editors. And who is the editor in question? Oh, that's right, the Jayson Blair of computing journalism, michael.
Why is this sort of thing marked as Interesting? Its rubbish. There is NO WAY that anyone could justify giving Microsoft's money to another company-backed organisation who in turn will use it to turn a profit.
Look at the replies in this thread. That's why. One group of people did it, a large number of the rest of the community are condoning the actions and the blackmail. There is nothing good for the community's image in any of this at all.
This whole debacle makes the Linux community looks like little spoilt brats and about a million, billion miles from being a serious competitor to Microsoft. Even this morning, the mad Open Source kid in my team was sqwaking down the phone about this like some immature little hacker. And that's all this is about - getting a one-up over Microsoft over something so, so dumb not for any real purpose but for stupid bragging rights. This whole thing is a sham and anyone who condones this action or the blackmail attempt by this team is a disservice to the Linux community. rant over!
And I'm sure that everyone on slashdot would agree, a single company having a dominating market share is what we want!
Wow, even Hollywood actresses are into open source.
Oh, hang on...

Yeah. Not quite a video game but...

$20-$40 for a movie and some popcorn? That must be one big box of popcorn.
I think Sean O'Keefe is already on Mars, after all, he thinks he's having a conversation with the teleportation expert from Star Trek, Miles O'Brien, eh?
Its called "W32/SitePostedOnSlashdot"
ahhh, but I bet you don't remember the Spectrum-compatible, Sam Coupe?
"How to get by with only 1 wife" might be useful

uptime is measured in years, you say?
On a product that was only released a year ago?
Or do you mean it comes up saying "Kernel Panic - Uptime: 0.043 years"?
