Phil Katz, creator of the ZIP compressed file format. Widely used, and in some ways fundamental to personal computing. Sadly, it'd be a posthumous nom, since, according to a Wall St. Journal article (whose text was copied in the following link), he died in a cheap hotel with a bottle of peppermint schnapps in his arms.
I only commented because I, on the other hand, do generic sys admin on contract for a rather large company that is rigidly afraid of adding a single new FT headcount, and while my boss swears they want to hire me full-time (with no OT, naturally), the offer will likely be *less* than what I'm making now.
So those who have a good story to tell should spread the word; maybe it will bleed over to the pay that the rest of us will get.
(in fake theatrical producer accent)
"Picture this: Palpatine and Vader on stage together, as they knock out their rendition of "Puttin on the Ritz", just like in Young Frankenstein! It'll kill, trust me!"
Or re: the parent post, Vader doing a baritone, hmmm... "Ole Man Death Star", sung to the tune of "Old Man River?" Sure it could work. After the Ewoks and Jar Jar, I'm starting to like the idea of a musical comedy.
In 1985 I had a headlight stolen off of my car... cost me about $9 to replace. The real pisser was that I had to replace the mounting bracket as well as the lamp itself.
As long as there is easy money available via banks and mortgage lenders, there will be little or no effect. BUT...
Eventually the bond market will drop, and market forces will raise rates, whether the Fed wants it or not. This will have much effect on interest-rate-sensitive industries. And it will pressure an already debt-laden public. For more on the credit bubble, lookie here.
Outsourcing: I and my tech-support section were outsourced at the end of 2002, to a local startup with no track record and only one other customer at the time. The motive? Cost savings. The result? After a year, the startup's contract was not renewed and the company is now (or so I hear) running unsupported. Good luck trying to do that for long...
the author is from my town... which is strange (not as strange as the story!), since badgers just don't pop up much around here. If she writes about installing Linux in a dead skunk or very large squirrel, then she may have something.;)
That's pretty handy, as it contains pointers to a lot of interesting early documents (e.g. RFC135, where the 2741 data terminal is described. It wasn't very web-friendly, as it didn't have the > and < characters, among others!)
Imagine the thousands of less-than-flexible programs in the world that would reject a name with a numeric digit in it. Just... say... n0.
Sorta OT: Where I grew up, an entire family changed their last name... seems the wife was a real estate agent, and didn't like the way her name looked on the signs. So the husband, wife and kids changed their name from Titmuss to Tyler. No kidding.
What I was getting at was whether the speed and ease of use of the Canon is sufficient for spectator sports use and whether another camera would do better. That's all.
I'd be interested to see how pro pics taken at the Super Bowl with Nikon's D2H camera (high-frame-rate, 4MP) compare with the digital EOS, especially since the photo editor claims that most of what he's getting from the EOS users is 'shit'.
Seems like there's still a difference; shelf space devoted to indy films vs. shelf space devoted to "indy games", whatever might qualify for that term. How many small studios are able to get their high-end platform game on the shelves of EB or WorstBuy or wherever games are bought? And on top of that, how many people are *looking* for small studio games vs small studio films? (Like any Clerks fan, I actively look for the new, small, odd film to get away from big budget boredom.)
... when will this one show up in C&C Generals? Wanna kill those Scud Storms at the boost phase! ;)
Koolio, meet the Pyxis HelpMate, found at better hospitals near you.

If they added your OT pay *and* 15,000 on top of that, you got an unusually good deal.

$3000 for a headlight? Accck.
"There IS no off-switch."
An hourglass... two funnels connected together.
25GB on paper. Wow. Wonder how long it will take before AOL converts to those and starts inserting them into local newspapers.
Looks to me like it was run through a code obfuscator... sure, you could write code with 1 and 2 letter vars for everything, but would you want to?
So there's a "Strat-o-Matic" for Cricket? No? Didn't think so.
A big fat asterisk, just like they tacked onto Roger Maris' record-breaking homer year.

Wood = renewable resource
Vinyl sheets = petroleum-based product with petroleum-based inks
Printed-paper sheets = renewable resource with petroleum-based inks
Throw in a water-based stain and finish for the veneer, and I'll take the wood, thanks.
As for wood, next stop: Amish Oak Case Mods

Better hope these guys don't plug South Park's "brown noise" into this beast.... or there's gonna be a lotta Mr. Hanky.

That's not development, that's data entry. Been there, done that, got the wrist brace.

Speak for yourself.... I find having a herbally-enhanced 20-inch dick to be rather empowering. Gotta watch out for the car door, though.
