Piracy and illegal computer activity are densest in asia, and india is close to china, the piracy capital of the world. 7. don't waste your life like jon carmack did on An Interesting Look at the Video Game Industry · · Score: -1, Troll

Lets talk about Jon Carmack. Jon is the legendary programmer of such classic PC games as Wolfenstein, Doom, Duke nukem 3d, Quake 1, 2, and 3, unreal, and the upcoming doom3. Jon has single handedly created the genre known as the first-person-shooter. He has also popularized the Direct3d 3d format over Microsoft's competing Opengl format, as well as caused public interest in 3d cards when he first released accelerated quake for the s3 virge chipset. Jon carmack has redefined gaming on PC's.

Now stop for a moment and think... What would have happened if Albert Einstein had worked creating amazing pinball games instead of creating the theory of relativity? Humanity would suffer! Jon carmack is unfortunately doing JUST THIS, using his gifts at computer coding to create games instead of furthering the knowledge of humanity. Carmack could have been working for NASA or the US military, but instead he simply sits around coding violent computer games.

Is this a waste of a special and rare talent? Sadly, the answer is yes.

Unfortunately, it doesn't stop there. Not only is Jon carmack not contributing to society, he is causing it's downfall. What was the main reason for the mass murder of dozens of people in columbine? Doom. It's always the same story... Troubled youth plays doom or quake, he arms himself to the teeth, he kills his classmates. This has happened hundreds of times in the US alone. Carmack is not only wasting his talents and intelligence; he is single-handedly causing the deaths of many young men and women. How does he sleep at night?

Carmack is a classic example of a very talented and intelligent human being that is bent on total world destruction. Incredibly, he has made millions of dollars getting people hooked on psychotic games where they compete on the internet to see who can dismember the most people. I believe there is something morally wrong when millions of people have computerized murder fantasies, and we have Jon Carmack to thank. Carmack has used his superior intellect to create mayhem in society. Many people play games such as quake so much that their minds are permanently warped. A cousin of mine has been in therapy for 6 months after he lost a 'death match' and became catatonic.

It is unfortunate that most people do not realize how much this man has damaged all the things we have worked hard for in America. Jon has wasted his intelligence, caused the deaths of innocent children, and warped this country forever. To top it off, he got rich in the process and is revered by millions of computer users worldwide. Perhaps one day the US government will see the light and confine Jon Carmack somewhere with no computers so he can no longer use his intelligence to wreak havoc on society.

Personally I find movie piracy to be good for the movie industry. I can search kazaa for divx's of movies, and if I like them, I go out and buy the DVD. There are no divx's that even come close to the quality of a dvd, and I cannot play divx's on my dvd player (I would rather watch movies on my 50 inch hdtv than my 17 inch flat pannel display!).

Divx's are also good because if I see a 'bootleg' home-camara recorded version of a movie that is still in theatres, I can get an idea of wether it is good or not simply by judging audience reation. For instance for the latest star wars movie, you could see alot of people getting pissed off and leaving the theatre because the movie was crap. If you didn't know this, you might have gone to see that terrible excuse for a movie.

Although I am an avid supporter of linux, I have alot of trouble keeping up with the latest version of my principal programs as well as the ever-changing kernal. It would be alot easier to update the system if there were easy to install service packs available, which upgrade all the main programs aswell as the kernal all with one click (like installing service packs in windows2000/XP, it updated the kernal and main programs like IE and media player all at once). Also, in windows when you install an update all your programs still run, but in linux is seems that when you update the kernal or compilar it breaks alot of applications (I do not understand this, it seems counter-productive, don't people test updates to avoid breaking older apps before they are released?).

As it stands I still love linux, but I won't begin to start using it as my primary OS untill it has service packs.

    from the article:

Each node consists of a 2.53 GHz Pentium 4 processor, 1 Gb of 333 MHz DDR SDRAM, an 80 Gbyte Maxtor hard drive

The normal P4 cpu was not meant for long computational work, it was meant for desktop mulimedia use. If you want cpu that can handle brutal computation work over a long period it would be wiser to use a cluster of Suns or low powered transmeta processors (create much less heat than bulky p4's! I'm sure that lab is hotter than an african rainforest)

333mhz ddr ram is sub-par. 333mhz ram is still relatively untested, 266mhz ddr would have been a wiser choice. Servers need reliable ram with error-checking, eg. rambus rdram. 333mhz ddr might be good for quake playing overclockers, but it is not what you want in a cluster.

Maxtor is one of the worst hard drive vendors out there. It would have been wiser to use more reliable drives for cluster work such as seagates or ibm's. I have had the displeasure of using maxtor drives and they never lasted more than a few months.

With all these factors in play, I would be surprised if this thing ran for more than a couple of months before totally breaking down.

Microsoft is allowed to ban whoever they want, for whatever reason.

This is very similar to what sattelite providers have done. Some have used eeprom updates that completely ruined systems that had pirated cards. Microsoft in turn is banning users who have used illegal mod chips which in turn could let a user use pirated games. This is no different than blizzard using serial numbers to prevent people from playing online using pirated versions of their products (blizzard is a prime example of a company that tries hard to curb piracy, despite many attempts to hack their protection such as bnetd).

Most importantly though, if you don't like MS's perfectly legal tactics, you have the perfectly legal solution of not buying their products.

  25. The reason... on Microsoft Loses $177m on Xbox in Three Months · · Score: -1, Troll

The main reason the x-box is losing money is quite simple: because it uses the pc architecture.

Other systems such as the playstation2 or the gamecube have been sucessful because they have a large amount of propreitary games and use propreuitary hardware. For instance you can't buy a gamecube or playstation2 to and run linux on it, but on the x-box you can.

Apple uses propreitary hardware and software, and they have had consistantly good sales for the past few years. By using the PowerPC chip instead of the standard x86 architecture for computers apple has created a propreitary market which is very profitable. EG. If you want to run Itunes you have to buy a 3,000$ computer. Microsoft hasn't latched on to this and by using standard PC hardware anyone can use their system any way they want.

Since microsoft loses 100$ on each xbox sale, a person would have to buy at least 2 games for them to make the money back. If a user simply buys an x-box to run linux on it, which many have done, then MS loses 100$. The simple answer is: Linux has killed the X-box sales. This is good. Lets just hope Microsoft doesn't begin to take legal action on X-box hackers.
