If you watch the flash presentation (or read the article closely), they mention this:

"The price tag for the 364 items this holiday season is $65,264, up from 2002's true cost of $54,951."

Their total number of items is higher than yours, but I'm too lazy to see if you're wrong or they are. ;)

Because compared to the systems already there, a DIY system wouldn't fit the bill. I mean, sure it works great for you because you know the kinks and how to get around bugs. If you're giving it to someone less computer literate, try to build a decent photo album program that'd work better than Gallery. I can install the Gallery Remote program on someone's computer and let them go at it.

As someone else mentioned, get your own domain and host the site somewhere. You can domains as low as $5 a year and host it anywhere from $10/yr (for a cheapo company that won't be around in a year) to $10/mo and up.. If you just want email, dont pay any more than $10/mo, if not less.

Then you can set the email addresses yourself from a simple web interface and if the host has a good spam system in place, you wont have to deal with that either.

Also, ask people you know for suggestions.. Don't go to those "10 best hosting companies!" as they're pretty much all paid placement. If you really care where you're going, browse Webhostingtalk and look for people that post often and are helpful. I figure if they're willing to help others on their own time, they'll help you out when you're a paying customer..

I used to think it wasn't complete, but I just didn't know what to tell apt-get to install. There's been maybe one or two libraries I could find that I installed into /usr/local so they wouldn't break anything else.
