This is pedantic BUT sometimes (rarely) the lottery's jackpot will grow big enough that you aren't already losing, and you actually have good odds.
Example: the chances of winning could be 1 in 107 million but the jackpot has unexpectedly grown to 150 million. Hypothetically, you could buy all 107 million tickets and still win money.
No they weren't!!! Best Buy was simply being paid by the RIAA to look for and document illegal copyrighted files on their customers' computers! They swear!
Anybody see anything wrong with this? It's a quote from Croal in the article:
It's hard to argue that games have anything approaching the depth of theater, novels, movies or television given the medium's newness; its requirement of repetitive action, reaction and interaction to maintain the player's interest; the thinness of its characters; the perfunctoriness of its plots; the lack of complex or even complicated psychology. It would be like arguing that an activity--a mountain hike, laps in a pool or a game of chess--is profound.
Actually, an AO rating does not allow anyone under 18 to purchase the game, with or without parental permission. That is more like the NC-17 "kiss of death" for movies.
That's right along my first thought after reading the summary. Brutally violent games shouldn't be rated AO? Wha?
I can understand the outrage over an outright ban, but rating a game appropriately, regardless of the consequences to the bottom lines of the companies involved, sounds like a good move to me.
The only thing I really see wrong with it is that it seems that video games get rated more harshly than movies, and there's no reason for it. You press buttons for one and you don't for the other. I'd like to compare Manhunt 2 to Hostel 2 and see which is worse, because I imagine the answer is Hostel 2. Maybe the same board should rate video games and movies?
Come on people, you know what it always come down to at the end: choosing the lesser of the evils! So I propose to reword the post's question: As a geek, which of the Presidential Candidates is the least worst for you?
Some examples:
Hillary (Hot Coffee) Giuliani (banned honking car horns) Obama (has a stupid Second Life account)
So not only is Stanford graciously enforcing the RIAA's copyrights for the RIAA, but they are also joining in on the payday for the pirates that are caught? Bad Stanford!
I thought I'd heard that MSNBC? was covering the debates, and was trying very hard to lock in all the content to themselves where no one could really publish parts of it, etc.
I use it mostly to watch parodies of TV shows and movies. If the filtering system isn't good, which is very likely, then it could block a lot of good, legal stuff.
For a second there, I thought he had announced he was creating his own rock band. I can only imagine him playing a song hitting only five buttons while the fans all put out mats and step on them.
The Chinese are selling virtual magical swords? Is their internet more free with their "Great Firewall of China" or is the article a little out of date?
I think you're contradicting yourself (perhaps unintentionally). On YouTube, there's a message that comes up on a very rare occasion: "This video has been removed due to copyright violations." That means that Google IS censoring but missing a lot.
As far as the "game makers", well, they know that a game based on the law-abiding middle-income family guy from suburbia, who goes to work and pays bills on time and attends a baseline church and plays a friendly game of poker once a month with "the guys" WOUDL MAKE A TERRIBLY BORING VIDEOGAME.
You mean The Sims? Yeah, people hated that...
But seriously, you're right. Video games should be held to all the same standards as movies. Why should CJ in San Andreas be held to a different standard than Samuel L. Jackson in Shaft? People have it in their heads that a stereotypical character in a video game is somehow worse than a stereotypical character in a movie. Can someone explain that to me without using the letters MPAA?
You're already losing by buying the ticket.

The meters are there to reduce the number of parked cars, not for revenue. Apple is offering money, not a solution to overcrowded streets.
Yeah, I don't get it either. "Since you're trying to reduce the number of parked cars, how about we help you by offering free parking!" ?!?!?!

Seriously, has any highly anticipated game ever NOT been delayed? I don't think this guy is really going out on a limb here.
The reason I do the same thing (close both the seat and lid) is so the cat won't drink out of the toilet. She has bad enough breath as it is!
We're surrounded!

This survey is 100% accurate, because they interviewed all 29 females currently working in IT jobs.
Actually they interviewed all 92 females. I'm not sure whether you didn't read the article or whether you inverted the numbers!
Atari 2600: One Joystick, one button. What more do you need?

You thought right: Here's the previous Slashdot Article.
He probably was just looking for a bargain on them.
Probably just a little bit easier to point, click, and wait for the mail. I doubt he was too concerned about saving money for the future!
Sure they might have let one guy buy some bullets but let's not forget all the dangerous people they stopped from buying virtual +5 swords!
I use it mostly to watch parodies of TV shows and movies. If the filtering system isn't good, which is very likely, then it could block a lot of good, legal stuff.
Bad news for Vampires, Type A is the tastiest. So much for just going to the blood bank for meals!

Wait, wait, you're saying that scientists have significant others??
Tang
That's a damn good list!

Has anybody checked on that Cramer guy? His blood pressure was through the roof even before the plunge!
