Just think, if this thing really works, then we've created another day where everyone will stockpile cans of food and hides in the cellar! "The Ancient Americans knew this clock would only need to be accurate for 3.65 million days!"
If you doubt that will happen, take a good look at the Mayan calendar.
the number of computer science majors enrolled at US universities increased for the first time in six years
Well, I guess it HAD to increase sometime. There's a financial saying that applies here, "Even a dead cat will bounce if you drop it from a great height."
I'm going to apply a little more of Lar's logic here and say that this is like Lars walked in a music store and shoplifted the CD. No one can disagree that would be wrong, would they? Only this is far, far worse because it involves the Internet.
So how much longer before we see a variation of this on our real-world car windshields?
I hope that we never see this. Not as long as there's a human steering the car. Do we really need yet ANOTHER distraction from driving? People are texting, putting on makeup, calling, eating, drinking, reading and doing too many other things than driving. Imho if a police should see you doing this they should sell your car and take your license since you're too stupid to figure out that 3000kg at 100km/h is a force to be respected.
The funny thing is that people are far more likely to "pull over and chat" in an FPS (where they can respawn) than in a real car (where they can't).
I would argue that it is important. Looking far into the future, when does a machine get rights? When it shows that it does have a "soul"? Or when it thinks enough like a human? Or does a machine never qualify?
This is a very good topic for debate. I can argue for either side of this: On one hand, I can look at the code for a machine at any time, regardless of complexity, to get to the details where procedure "self-awareness" or "feel_sad" is called. So, we can argue that it is not really feeling these things, it is just calling code to emulate the feelings.
On the other hand, I can argue that there is nothing special about being self-aware. If we recognize ourselves as existing and have a certain level of intelligence, isn't that enough, whether it is called by code or called by brain cells in the body?
Like most politicians, the leading contenders don't have personal expertise in the field of finance so, no, they don't know a whole lot about how the economy works.
Agreed. Just look at how much personal expertise politicians have in the field of technology to get a good idea of how much personal expertise politicians have in the field of finance. Then, try not to panic.
"Turn off intrusive alerts. Anything that pops up, flashes, or goes "ding!" will interrupt you when you're trying to focus and will trigger a response to check your email."
That seems like a really bad idea to me. Without alerts, I would be checking for new emails a lot more often than I already do.
Nobody does a cash discount anymore because it's against eBay policy. eBay is all about making the seller unable to get around eBay's exorbitant fees in any way possible. That is their entire basis for forcing PayPal.
To give an example of their total fee structure: after selling a small item for $30, you're only going to see around $24.50 for it after fees, and then you still have to pay to ship it.
This is not the right thing to be complaining about, another change that goes along with this is that final value fees are increasing from 5.25% to 8.75%. That makes items ending for $25.00 fees equal $2.19 instead of the current $1.31.
Anyone who thinks this is a trivial project has never watched Jeopardy.
Um... hello? Jeopardy is a trivia game show.
j/k

Me too.

"Print is dead."
No I thought, "I understand QWERTY and even DVORAK keyboards, but why the hell would anyone want three E keys?"
I guess we'll find out in the next
Really! It's quite fascinating actually.

This is ALL your fault, mqduck!

The end of TFA actually says:

She won despite her age, not because she took drugs or anything.
A younger age is actually an advantage. 20 is practically considered an aging veteran of the sport.
I think it's funny that the Olympics tests drugs so rigorously, yet not this age rule. Both are biological advantages.
Maybe he was dictating it.

Because botnet sounds WAY COOLER and FIERCE than distributed computing!
Do you realize how long this sentence is? Fine for court documents, but not for a casual news site.
It's fine, we're all very adept lawyers here.

Richard Stallman on OLPC
I knew it! I knew that guy had to be on something! But, I thought it would be PCP.
Missed me missed me now you've got to kiss me!
After all, .gov could try to make the case that the two of them are terrorists
Actually, that's happened before...
But we still get just as many superpowers right?
