  1. This is just stupid on Red Hat Announces Product EOL Calendar · · Score: 1

    Timothy commented:
"I don't see how this is "Microsoftish" -- the code Red Hat creates or includes is still GPL, and you can pay anyone willing to fix it. They're not required to support it forever :)"

You know, neither is microsoft. Does this mean Slashdot will officially stop complaining about EOLs from Microsoft?

  2. The real problem... on MPEG 4, Windows Media 9 At War · · Score: 2, Interesting

Is that MPEG-4 is so outdated and pathetic compared to wma9 format. Of course microsoft doesn't want an open file format for media... why is this such a shocker? They're a business... they're in it for the money, not to make the consumer happy. They'll only make the consumer happy when it makes them money.

The idea that mpeg-4 is better than wma9 just because it's free is idiotic. It's clearly a less capable video format. So if we're going to rally behind an open format... let it be a good one (for instance, the OpenOffice.org xml format for documents.)

  5. Pearl Jam and Vinyl on Inside One Of the Last Vinyl Record Manufacturers · · Score: 3, Interesting

Pearl Jam (the band, not the... err... stuff) releases all of their albums on Vinyl first (a practice they've done at least since their second release in 1993.) The band members have a love of vinyl, and that's mainly the purpose.

The fan club singles they release every year are also only put out on vinyl. An interesting note: it was a trip to the Library of Congress that sealed this decision: vinyl, unlike tape and CD is impervious to time and will not break down if it is protected from damage, unlike magnetic and optical formats (tapes and CDs)

I have no idea who presses the Pearl Jam vinyls. I do know that PJ's album "Vitalogy" was the the last vinyl album to enter the billboard top 100 list.

  8. Have you looked at your university? on Jobs for Students - Where Are They? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I know most CS students see it as "below" them, but most universities have a thriving IT department. Even getting a job at the help desk can be a *huge* boost in your career... a couple years of that, and you've suddenly got 2+ years of experience in the field. You don't have to stay, but it's a good place to start.

The real problem is waiting until you get out of college. IT departments in colleges are much more willing to hire students, because they can count more on the person actually sticking around if he's got two or three years of school left.

  11. really... on Microsoft's New Hurdles · · Score: 4, Insightful

as time extends out, the need for a "visible" operating system" is going to be less and less necessary. The OS will be a part of the hardware. When was the last time you upgrade the operating software of your television?

As OS's become invisble, the need for upgrading them is going to be lost on consumers, so MS would have a hard time trying to sell it as a product. It will become a commodity only.

I think MS's only options for maintaining a business model are to either expand into other software areas (there aren't many left) or to start renting software, which they seem inline to do.

  12. email as ftp. on E-Mail Size Limits? · · Score: 1

I've seen some posts suggesting this isn't a good thing, but it's just so much easier to do... especially if you don't have a remote server with a web panel interface. If a user ftp's a file, and then gets to a computer without an ftp program, what can they do? nothing much... unless the ftp is visible on the web. Using webmail (which everyone at my university uses now) makes this process much simpler. Even I, who know quite a bit about computers, find sending files over email much easier because when I get to work or home, I don't have to download anything... the file is already sitting on my computer (unless my mail program has crashed for some reason).

Anywho, that's off topic a bit. I personally don't see a problem with configurable limits. Is this possible on a per-account basis? Set the limit at 5mb (that seems high to me!) and then increase it for users who request it. Really, if people want to send huge files over email, they should break them up over several emails rather than uploadding a 100mb email.

Why put it on the web? Well, there are often times, on irc and in email, when I want to point someone to something I've written... plus, if anyone is visiting my website, then it's possibly they want to know more about me. If they don't, then fine. If they do, then the weblog is there.
