I like this idea, it's slightly more direct than what's being done now, although I'd like to see it taken a step further. I'd like to see a list of sponsers/ads during a show that I can not only request more info on, but order. This is particularly useful for DIY/Home improvement shows. Also for shows like Extreme Makeover: Home Edition where the show you're watching is actually a factor in your motivation for endorsing the show's sponsors.

I'm really not trolling here, but wouldn't one solution be for broadcast companies & tv manufacturers to initially set v-chips to only allow TV-G and G-rated movies by default? maybe put the 4-digit access pin on the sign-up contract (which is only legally binding to adults)

I know this is rather simplistic, I have several qualms about the rating systems and the v-chip myself (which ammendment is that again? the one about freedom to leech or something like that?) but from the eyes of a manufacturer/broadcaster, wouldn't this help keep those pesky senators quiet, being that anybody who allows "indecent" content on their television is doing so by their own will? I'd imagine this would protect most homes, and make more parents aware of the v-chip and how to use it. To my understanding, that's a big problem with the v-chip issue today is that most parents don't even think about whether or not it exists, and never notice the "parental controls" feature which is usually hidden in the setup menus.

binary packages are normally signed by the development team. if the binary packages were changed at all, the packages won't match the signature and the installer should refuse to install them (or at the very least, warn about the signatures) so really the debian distribution should still be safe to use (again, this is assuming that their installer checks signatures. which, considering debian's scrutiny, i'd be surprised if it didn't)

As the person you're replying to pointed out, there will never be one opinion in charge of all the media because it will be too easy for someone who caters to another viewpoint to move in and take market share.

this assumes that political agenda is what drives these companies.

politics are secondary. money drives these companies.

so why not own the widest variety of large networks as possible, giving the broadest possible spectrum of opinion/politics as possible, and then you're the only one making a profit in the media industry.

once you have that accomplished, you get to set the bar to an "affordable" level (I'm of the opinion that the masses eat only from what they're fed) and narrow content availablility to a manageable scale.

this road paved with purchases of other companies that are financially struggling but are undervalued at the time of purchase (AOL/Time/Warner/Netscape/AllYourBase)

and so "Free Speech" is protected in that there is a diverse opinion available, except making your own opinion available, or better yet, making money anywhere as an artist/musician/talk show host gets harder to do without signing away your art/music/voice/likeness to a large company.

I don't really have a problem with one company owning newspapers/radio stations/tv stations, but when the price/availability for others to maintain the same kind of network gets to be unaffordable (I.E. rising FCC Fees, skyrocketing equipment costs) then only the rich get heard.

not sure where i'm going with this but i think my point is that its not just what's being said or what's being heard but who's saying that which is being heard.

That said, i don't think its the FCC's place to regulate this kind of thing, this is the kind of thing we're to rely on the DOJ for. but the FCC has been known to cater to the monopolies (like the baby bells) in the past, and that's still going almost unchecked by the other agencies of government.

  9. Re:$3k? When $500 is almost as good? on NVIDIA's New Pro Graphics Quadro FX 3000 Reviewed · · Score: 1

from what I read, the $3k card is designed for render farms, if I understood correctly (i'm not 100% that i did, but i at least understood some of it)the cards talk directly to each other for fast mutli-machine rendering.

This is an enhanced version of the QFX3K, with a daughter card that sits on top of the board, mezzanine style. This board provides such functionalities as "Framesynch" multi-system synchronization and "Genlock" for synchronization to an external source input. The Framesynch connections are the sockets that look similar to Ethernet jacks. These provide the ability to have multiple systems working on a single model and rendering contiguous pieces of it, for example, while displayed at the same time on a larger screen format. The Genlock connector is the coaxial plug on the card. However, we're looking at the standard version of the Quadro FX 3000 here for our test purposes, so that's what we'll be focusing on in this showcase.

that means that when Pixar /AAA Architecture and Design decides its time to finish up with their rendering project, it cuts render time down significantly, and since there are so few new cards out there that do exactly this, yea the price is going to be steep. and hell this is the kinda marketing that empires are built on. in order to get a real return on the investment, you need to buy more than one (let's say 32) and then the fastest agp8x machine you can get your hands on, and don't forget software licenses. so even though the card is $3k, to use the card well, you need to spend around $250K, $96K of which goes to nvidia...this is all top-of the head/google calculator math, but i'm just trying to get a general idea across....this card isn't for gamers, like at all....they probably want gamers NOT to buy this card....this is for the movies and the designers/architects.

In our case its pretty much database software. So even though offices may be required to consider open source software, it wouldn't really be very easy to move their data and software to an open sourced operating system like linux. also I'm pretty sure that a lot of these guys already know what software and hardware they're going to use before they even get started on the bidding process. That said, I'm personally very ready for if the government offices do want to start using open-source software, I'm a big lover of free software and would like if we wound up rewriting our software for an open platform.

What a marketing nightmare! Can you imagine these teeming masses of ppl that don't know what speed processor they have, much less whether or not the thing supports USB (or often much more than how old the damn thing is) going out there and trying to buy software for MacOS and then calling support to figure out why the CD they bought says for Mac Only and then the software guys trying to explain that just because they run MacOS, they don't necessarily have a Mac. or worse yet, a mac user going out and buying software that says "made for mac" and then learning that the vendor goofed and they have now bought PC SOFTWARE.

one of the key central ideas to the mac is being completely usable by the people who have never heard of the x86, or the powerpc, or the 680x0,
or even (for that matter) linux or bsd

the other half of that idea is for these people to never ever ever have to learn what any of those things are, much less what they do.

maybe down the road things will be easier, but right now the proprietary hardware is still better than the x86(64-bit words since the first ppc) and its still much easier to use.

the people I know in the media/"art" industry know very well what they get from a mac. they turn it on, do their work, and turn it off. and they don't have to do any noticeable amount of work just so that they can do their work.

personally i'm not one of these people, I like my interface my way, but I grew up with the mac so I understand their point.

Jobs obviously has a big woody for all those pc users, along with the rest of apple, but i doubt they're going to allow their name associated with something that could be called confusing.
