It is common knowledge that there are many problems with the current theories of gravity. In fact, that is just the point, these are just theories, designed to explain what we see around us. Evolution is also just a theory, with many well publized and commonly known problems.
I'd love to see a holodeck also. But I disagree about creating Cousellor Troi. Do you remember the episode called 01010110 (or something) where the Binars created the 'woman in red' for Commander Ricker (sp?) in the Jazz club? Now that's what I'm talking about!!
When a tree falls in the middle of the forest, and there is no one around to hear it (human or animal), then it does not make sound. The only thing it does is create a change in air pressure, but a human (or animal) is needed to convert that into what we call sound.
My personal favorite was CLANS, at least until the Sysop of the board started cheating. I ran my own BBS for a while, but that was just when BBSs were dying out, and the Inet was becoming the new world!
I agree! I hate multiplayer games, and I will by buying Doom III when it is released. Personally, I can't wait. Now, I will buy the games before upgrading my video card, just to see if it really is neccessary.
There is no such thing as too much Matrix!! That said, yes, it will probably reduce the box office take a little, but not that much. It really depends when they release, and the competition on those particular weekends. Personally, I am really looking forward to them releasing all three in some collectors edition DVD set!!
At my small Canadian University (~6000 students) 100% of all CompSci courses are taught using Solaris 8 on Sparc Ultra 5 systems. And yes, Linux has become cool and elite among undergrads here also.
Not so. WMP8 (and WMP7) were always shitty players. They are extrememly resource hungry (like all MS products, it seems) and on slower machines, they can't even play a simple CD without skipping. Even on a Athlon 1.6 I've noticed severe hesitation when switching to full screen mode. Personally, I'll stick to WinAmp, or WM6.4. (PowerDVD also!)
Glad the moderators didn't decide to mod this down to shit.
The only real problem with your idea is time. Even if you spent all your waking hours running this 'farm', how could you possibly keep over 240 computers updated, if they are all running different OSes and different flavours. I am kept busy just keeping the ~95 computers running 5 different OSes I'm in charge of updated. And they are Windows! Which means no compiling, cutting down on the time. With all the different Linux flavours alone, you'd have a full time job for a team. Plus, when are you going to find the time to put this processing power to good use! Playing games, watching movies!
And of course, as you already know, in this field a degree is nice, but it's hardly essential. An impressive resume is much more important than a degree...
But, to get into this field, a degree is becoming more and more important.
I'm not sure if the above post was meant to be funny, or if the poster (AC) was serious. Yes, if cows are sacred to you, I assume they'd all be equal. But cows are actually holy?!
As the SysAdmin for a K-12 school, these holidays are the best time for me to get any real work done. I'm taking off Christmas Day and New Year's Day, but every other day I'll be 'slaving' away. The nice thing is that I come and go as I wish, so if I want to take part of the afternoon off to watch a movie, I do! (I get paid by the hour.)
We've just had a small wireless ISP statup here in my little town of Fort Macleod in Canada. There currently are the _only_ source of high speed Internet, so I will sign up with them, but I fear they won't last.
I don't get it. I'm a huge fan of the Hubble, but how does a $60M to $1.5B mission justify a mere 3 more years of life for the telescope?

I run a home-based computer consulting business. I have a PO box, and we visit the customers, instead of them visiting us. Never had a problem yet.
Atmospheric Computing (www.atmospheric.biz) also sells laptops with no OS installed. They'll even install and configure Linux for you free of charge.
Oh, and people like me make a killing fixing the problems once the worm has hit! It's a love-hate relationship, lets face it.
You could write a small app that simply mirrored an Internet atomic time server.

Weirdly enough, there are people who love working. I do. But then, I'm own my own computer consulting business. I get paid to build websites, etc!!!

If it is quite easy, then why is this considered important enough to make Slashdot? Seemed like this was a big deal!
How does this kind of shit make it into the middle of a discussion on human powered airplanes? What are the moderators for anyway?!

Actually, freshwater tanks generally require heaters, not coolers. But, the temperature can't vary too much, or most fish will die from shock.

I hope that at least you thought this meant something useful.
