Does not matter how long it takes. Companies who may implement DRM know there is an inconvenience factor involved. How many times will the average public patch/hack/config something to make it work outside the "law"? My guess is the die-hard geeks will do it as much as it takes but johnny-lunchbox is going to get pretty tired real quick. This has to do with America's lazy attitude toward everything. It has to work right now and without any thought on the users' part.

When I purchase the next gen console I want the latest and greatest technology not something that is hindered by some old piece of crap game that is 4 years old and plays like a dog. Everything I do is saved in My Documents and is backed up locally and then copied to my server where a backup tape runs nightly. Anal? Yes but at least I know I have a backup if needed.

It would have to burrow into the asteroid before exploding. We would certainly have some space debris, but as long as it was somewhat spread out, most wouldn't do much damage if the pieces that broke off weren't too big.

My thoughts would be to have the weapon(s) sit on the surface of the object in close proximity to each other and explode at the closest possible point where the axis of the detonation point was most inline with the earth. That way the object's particle trajectories would be outward from the blast point (directly inline with earth). Thus "most" of the particles would be sent around the earth. That is if they were not seduced by either the moons or earths gravity. Another factor would be if the object broke apart cleanly. At any point the odds of NASA or any other worldly organization doing this is pretty much moot.

Another thing I see is all these companies are just waiting in the wings with this until someone violates the GPL, goes to court and actually wins. Say good bye to all these companies support of the Open Source movement. Everything they are working with will be come closed and cost dearly for since there will be a dependency on it. Just because it's Open Source does not mean these companies have an ulterior motive up their sleeves. These companies are all in the business to make money and will do it anyway possible and crush those who stand in their way.
