Due to the joys of the way DVDs work this is not really Macrovision's fault. The work required to produce a MV protected disc is to flip the 'protect with Macrovision' bit in the appropriate data structure on disc. Any screen-effects you see are due to the MV circuit in your decoder. You could try sue-ing Sony for not complying with their own specs but I'd imagine they would just give themselves the ability to get around it.

From my totally unscientific sample of one school near to my college which I consult for, I can say that school IT managers tend to be some 'knowledgable person' the hire to 'learn on the job'. Schools cannot offer the kind of salarys required to get a professional IT manager in. Hence anyone they get in will either have to learn MS on the job or OSS. Also one might just point out that training is the one thing schools are very good at :).

Works for me, you have set interval mail checking haven't you (i.e. told it to check mail every n minutes)?

don't tell me to pitch in and make these apps better. i'm a writer, not a programmer. i want things to JUST WORK on linux.

XCode is pretty nice as an IDE (for one it allows you to add shell script hooks to your projects) and the editor is OK (although the first person to make a vim plugin will get beer bought for them by me at least). No idea how it compares to VB.net but, AFAIAC, anyy IDE which includes more than an editor and project manager is bloated.

The SCM support (SVN, CVS and Perforce IIRC) is pretty nice too.

Certainly in EULAs up to and including Windows 2000 there was a clause saying that, if you didn't agree with the EULA for Windows, one could take the shrink-wrapped box back to the vendor for a refund. I don't know if the WinXP EULA has such a clause however.
