Not so much that, but I know theirs geeks out their with a linux or BSD box firewalling, that logs EVERY packet for some paronoid reason. *G* Anyways, I'm guessing one of these people would have caught something like this already. I'll agree with the hoax line.
95% seems wrong. My way of looking at it is that what if 5% (which is not unlikely) of the P2P users were using *nix. I'm guessing these boxen wouldn't be affected, which means they've infected 100% of windows machines on the P2P network. Thats... just wrong.:-) Doesn't norton or something of that nature ask you before a program is allowed to send info out? Wouldn't someone have caught this already?
Yeah, except I don't think I'd get as much thrill out of watching my drunk friend hit on a machine as when he hits on the 40 year old 350lb woman that works at our bar.
I think things like this are great. I'm glad geeks like stuff like this for the most pat. But I'm not happy about it. I knew it was going to happen. What I dont like is that EVERYTHING must be commercialized.:-( I remember back in the day I wanted to engineer my own custom car Mp3 player. I still can obviously, but the bad part is I can't do it as cheap as these in dash "Hook up the power and go" units. Its kinda depressing. The minute you build something nifty outta an old PII board and misc parts, some stupid company comes along and says "Oh, lets make this cheaper, smaller, and mass market it. This just sucks. Yeah its great for the "Not as geeky" people. Its just not as cool when I show off my geek thing and someone else was like "Oh, yeah I bought one of those last month".:-(
Beacuse of mplayer I will never even try WMP9 if it gets ported to Linux. Its just trouble. Plus, mplayer can play real, quicktime, divx, etc etc... I'm sure wmp can play some of these.. but I know it can't play all the stuff mplayer can:-)

Well, considering the fact that he's already used them, I'd say your a bit behind.
but not allowed to touch a computer or log onto the Internet until January 20, 2003.
This is wrong. He's been able to use computers for quite a while now, he was just banned from the internet. So, in theory, he's been able to use MDK and XP, which you can purchase at a store. (Why anyone would use MDK when Slackware exists is beyond me). Jokes aside, if I remember correctly, I read somewhere that he was heavy into Solaris when he got busted.
I've put almost a decade of of my life into computers. I'm just realizing now that I can't get a decent job. I could go work at McDonalds and almost make as much as I make here. I'm seriously considering a job outside of the computer world, and putting computers back on the shelf as a hobby again. I can't support my family on what I make. The factory down the road has a higher starting pay than what I make now... its starting to get really tempting.:-/
Mplayer rocks my pants! Just never use the RPM's. Always build by hand, and take the 5 hours to build all the libraries for it. It will play ANYTHING. But the people making RPMS for it just don't take the time to get all that support in there. That was depressing as hell! (Plus I just love watching stuffs compile)
I've been trying to figure out why this article was drawing me in so much. At first I thought it was all the tech details. Oh a computer in space. NIFYT! Not it. I finally realized with your post that, it is the curiousity of whats out there that intrigues me. All the posts about "Why can't all the manufactures....blah blah". So many of them, I'd rather see none of them. I guess I was just craving information about whats out there, how far it is away, how many years they've been waiting, the idea that it takes about 22 hours (Is this accurate?) for a command to get to the probe and back. Its just fun. Now if they could only come back with something nifty. Like.. 'We found a plant growing on x plannet!!' Then I'd be like 'HOLY BUSTED RUBBERS BATMAN!'. Until then I guess I'll just go back to work.
I agree. And good luck convincing a non-geek lotr fan (the kind that read the book.. their is a book you know) to not go see the new movie. Slashdot community is just not big enough to make a difference, and your not going to convince Joe Shmoe to stop buying this stuff.
You mean I'm not the only one on/. that reads the post, hits 'Read More', and tries to figure out what the article has in it by what other people reply with? I don't feel so alone now!
I don't even see it that way. I'm pretty small time. Plus I'm not speaking in the context of a large (Mid/small) company. I think more TINY.:-) Anyway, if I were to start another business (first one failed, fsck!), I would think more small time. For instance. If I sell 1000 copies of a game at $20/game, thats $20,000. If I coded that myself and had little to no over head, I'd be happy with that. Now lets take 'a few thousand coppies'. Lets up the price to $25.00 and say 3000 copies. Thats $75,000. I'd definately be happy with that.:-) Of course, this is only speaking in terms of theory. Real world numbers tend to be a bit more jagged. Anyway. Thats my opinion.
Indeed! I've enjoyed the latest Final Fantasy games sooo much. I never could figure out why I was so drawn to them untill I went back to play the original FF on my nintendo (Yes, I still have them, yes they work). The thing I noticed was that the newer ones didn't per se have a better story line (which they do, heh), but the story line is more convincing due to all the nice graphics and such. You get a much warmer fuzzy when CGI Rinoa and Squall are hooking up than when some little 8 bit blocky guy is like 'Message box: Your hot'. Just my two cents;-)
Yeah, wait for the next 'Security Patch' to have the updated EULA. Microsoft will probably be changing their licensing very quickly. Which turns it around again and makes it useless. =)
Big Telcos bug me. They charge like hell and yet they are always crying about losing money (Last time I checked atleast, could be different now). On top of that, they are a monopoly, how can they lose money? Ick. Greed. And for me, well, I can't offord to start my own local independant telco, so thats the end of the story.
I bow to you sir! I feel the same way. Stop worring about China and worry about all the damn problems here! This kinda reminds me of when I was hearing about all those starving etheopian kids from a telemarketter, and I was like 'Lady, I've eaten toast for the last week because _I_ can't offord to eat. Go raise ME some money!'
If all these people are willing to 'Help out a cause' why don't they start looking here? Oh, thats right, its not as glamerous. Thats pretty pathetic.
I could really care less about Joe Sixpack. IMHO Joe Sixpack is a yuppie. Yeah, I don't like the things that are going on out there, but I decided to just work around them. Of course, I do understand other peoples point of view, and I know it does effect them. My point is, I'm not Joe Sixpack, and I still don't give a flying foo. Polititions lie, big business lies. Why should I even try to battle them? I'm not that good of a liar, so I won't stand a chance.
PS: Yes, this was ment to have a small sarcastic tone.
Prepare for it? Don't you mean "How to hold back the tears when your 233mhz personal webserver finally gets something worthy of./ on it and gets melted in the./ing" ?:-d
mmmm, the macs. I remember making a mac linux boot disk and taking it to school just to see what kind of messages showed up in dmesg for the hardware. I also remember getting in some huge trouble about that. It wasn't so much that I was 'Doing something with the computers that I wasn't supposed to'. It was more that I was doing something that the teacher (who was self proclaimed 'Older and wider') didn't understand what I was doing. Sad.
That works, but please keep Liv Tyler off that list. I'd rather take the chance of a huge rock slamming me on the head than never being able to see Liv Tyler again!
This sounds familiar. Isn't the MPAA bitching that all us Ev1l haxx0r types were downloading copyrighted material without paying for it? Whats that? The movie industry just did it to Stan? OMFG?!?! Those Ev1l haxx0rz!!!
I actually liked Spiderman (Even though I never was into the Spiderman Comic book, or the cartoons, the movie just clicked), but if Stan Lee aint getting any of the cash from me going to the theatre to watch it, then fsck it, when the second and third one come out, I'll wait till someone else buys it, and borrow it from them. FSCK you Marvel.

Hrm.. boobies... my only weakness. Its like that green stuff.. ya know, the Kryptonite! Or as the Blood hound gang says "HOOORAY FOR BOOOOBIES!"
I'd say if slashdot doesn't kill it, nothing will! Except the MPAA.. Evil bastards!

If Microsoft did this (MSN actually), would you be proud of them? Just curious. :-)

So uh, how long before toilets come with per-flush licensing? Diarrhea could be expensive!
Hrm, who does this sound like: "Look at me! I own everything"
