While the current network policies may seem restrictive, I did live in the dorms during the 2003-2004 school year, and between xbox gaming and unlimited p2p filesharing, we had to survive with bandwidth that had the throughput of a coathanger. Average download speeds would rarely top the equivelent of dialup. I know that there is a plethora of affordable off-campus housing in Mount Pleasant, most of it with broadband included in the price of rent. If you aren't trapped by the horrible if-you-get-any-scholarship policy that makes you live on campus for two years, I strongly advise you to look into it.

  5. Goals on Understanding Addiction-Based Game Design · · Score: 1

To begin with, I have not RTFA (damn you websense!) nor have I ever played WoW. But I can give some examples of addictive games that I have played, such as Sid Meier's Pirates! As many other posters have pointed out, one of the features that they feel makes WoW addictive is the social interaction. This has no appeal for me, which is why MMORPG's haven't ever really captivated me the way most single player games have. I think that the addictiveness has to take into account both the nature of the players and also the player's goals. In the case of Pirates! the game became very addicting because the quests that would be given to you could be accomplished in about 20 minutes each. This, coupled with a fairly intuitive control scheme using just the number pad on the keyboard made for a great pick up and play kind of game, but always having the ability to complete a particular quest in 20 minutes or less triggers a "just one more" kind of play style where I lose track of time and next thing I know I've been playing for 14 hours with minimal breaks. Having short, attainable goals that tie into a long term goal provides a sense of accomplishment that produces a desire to keep on playing without interruption.

  13. Re:Bullshit on Joining the ACLU? · · Score: 0

Well, unfortunitly, the state militia as mentioned in the constitution no longer exists. What the courts interpret to be it's modern day successor is the National Guard. However, if you look at notes and letters writtin by the founding fathers, you see quite specificly that they had no intention of the Federal Government funding, training, or having any control over the militia. The Federal Government provides arms(Which they are only suppossed to specify what kind the states should buy), training(National Guard troops go through basic and combat training alongside regular army personnel), and the Federal Government has on serveral occasions commited National Guards men to duty inside a state, even directly over ruling a state governer. So, the state militia no longer exists as stated in the constitution, and that power MUST fall back to the individual, NOT to the federal government as has happened.

  14. Re:GPL avaiable from LINKSYS on Linksys and the GPL, Again · · Score: 2, Informative

    Well, from the horse's mouth:

    from http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html
    ------

Does the GPL require that source code of modified versions be posted to the public?

The GPL does not require you to release your modified version. You are free to make modifications and use them privately, without ever releasing them. This applies to organizations (including companies), too; an organization can make a modified version and use it internally without ever releasing it outside the organization.

But if you release the modified version to the public in some way, the GPL requires you to make the modified source code available to the program's users, under the GPL.

Thus, the GPL gives permission to release the modified program in certain ways, and not in other ways; but the decision of whether to release it is up to you.

    --------
So, if Linksys did modify the software, they (for the most part) must release the source. If they didn't modify it, and only messed w/ configuration files, then they should be good.

I'm sorry I wasn't clearer. We have only just started to convert the music, with about 13,000 albums finished. We have a rather large SAN set up to handle all of the music. It doesn't take too long to rip the music off of cd/record/tape, because we have access to equipment donated from NPR.

  20. Some legal issues on Legalities of a Company Sponsored MP3 Repository? · · Score: 3, Interesting

First off, I work for a fine arts academy, where we recently converted all of the old records, tapes and cd's we had in our music library (750,000+ albums) into mp3's encoded at 320kbps. Some of the legal issues we ran into were had to do with students copying the mp3's onto their local machines, in essence making illegal duplicates. Because the library only paid for one copy, and must pay a nominal set fee for every copy they make of the music, we either had to come up with a way to keep track of how many copies were out going and bill the respective student's expense account accordingly, or make it so that we only kept one copy and all the students had to share it.

We went with the one copy system using a web interface and streaming the music because it gave us the best accountability, and we were able to keep track of all the music's statistics using a SQL database. Because our music contract states that we cannot remove the actual music from the library, we located the 2 servers underneath the circulation desk, solving that little problem. Because of our VLANing and general setup, only non-wireless trusted clients can connect. This means that the students can log in from their dorms and listen to their music, with out having to trek a 3/4 mile across campus in the snow.
