With all 16 pipelines unlocked, and it's great. I also have a fanless Antec Phantom PSU and a huge thermalright heatsink with a 120mm fan (at minimum speed on a Zalman fanmate) over my CPU, all in an Antec 3700BQE (noise-reducing) case. Incredibly quiet yet very fast, though I've been thinking of upgrading to a dual-core CPU.
It would be nice to see an article about, say, products available to reduce computer noise, rather than what amounts to an advertisement for a specific product...
Take a small pouch with you, containing a 2.5" laptop drive with OS and OpenOffice on it and a tiny screwdriver. Replacing the drive and copying the files from the flash card would take a couple minutes, max. It would be a lot cheaper than trying to fit another drive in a laptop, especially since even a tiny 20 gig one would be fine. It would also be better for backups, since any screw up or virus on a mirrored RAID would be, well, mirrored on both hard drives.
Better uses of this are in a striped RAID to improve performance in desktop replacements. (Not that I personally have any interest in something so heavy, noisy, and burning hot, but whatever) Making a similar motherboard for centrino-based desktops would be awesome, though...
1 lb. beefsteak, with 1 pt. bitter beer every 6 hours

And don't stuff your head with things you don't understand.
Every PDA since the Palm IIIxe and the Handera 330 has been worse for ebook reading. Processors that need more energy, backlit colour screens, non-replaceable lithium batteries... these are all very expensive, and all make a device worse for using as an ebook reader. A cheap LCD screen with a slightly bigger area, AA batteries, "obsolete" processor...that is all that is needed. It is definitely technically possible, but no company seems interested in making one.
That reviewer is an idiot, but I didn't like the movie for a different reason - it completely screws up the book. I can understand having to make some major changes to get things to fit, but the plot is completely different and doesn't even make much sense on its own.
Heck, in comparison to this movie, I feel silly complaining about the red amulet in the Secret of NIMH. Pretty though...
How fast would it lose atmosphere, assuming the pressure and composition were suitable for humans? If it takes millions of years, redirecting the occasional ice asteroid to burn up in the atmosphere (say, every century or millenia) might be enough.
Yeah, I tried a Zalman "Silent" PSU before... at any reasonable wattage/temp it wasn't that much better than regular PSUs. I was a bit concerned how stable the Phantom would be, but I've had it for months with no issues.
I only have the one drive in my 3700BQE, but that's a bummer. The Nexus Breeze is the only other one I could find with some attempt at noise reduction and without (useless) holes in the sides, but it doesn't have the drives isolated by rubber - I'm not sure if it would rattle more, or if the soundproofing material would dampen any vibrations. (Well, there's also that several thousand dollar heatpipe case...)
The annoying thing was that as soon as I got rid of one whining or droning noise I'd notice a slightly quieter one... Now, it's inaubible except in dead silence.
Oh, duh. That's what I get for skimming the article. I didn't pay any attention after "no moving parts" anyway. Still probably takes up less space than my current 6800 with its huge heatsink, but either is much better than having a blowdryer attached...
"Sapphire's exciting new cooler is a compact, low-profile design using only one additional PC slot. Filled and sealed, it requires no user intervention, no reservoir or refilling and it is card resident so it requires no additional mounting space. The revolutionary use of an electromagnetic pump means no internal moving parts, low power consumption and delivers near silent operation."
Well, the only reason I could see for having it is to combine a "big MP3 player" and a pda in a single small device... even with all the books and references I have on mine, I still have a little left on my 512 meg flash card.
Personally, I'd rather avoid having moving parts and get a bigger card if I needed one, unless this thing is substantially faster - and gets better battery life, which I find rather unlikely.
Well, I don't know about predictable... Too much insulin and they can go into diabetic coma and die, too little and they can get organ damage and have a heart attack or need their feet amputated.
So you're looking for a laptop that weighs 10 kilos, has half an hour of battery life, and would burn you if you ever actually put it on your lap? And PDAs with moving parts? My 512 meg memory card already has more than enough room for all the books I need, though I admit better resolution would be nice. Even nicer would be a screen large enough to be comfortable to use at that resolution, in a system that either sucked a small enough amount of power or with a large enough battery to last weeks like the old Palm IIIxe did.
As for this system, the way the keyboard/cover thingy attaches just looks awkward. It has decent specs except for having integrated graphics, but - just like PDAs without flip covers - I just don't understand the thinking that went into this design. It looks like something that would be easy to lose, and much harder to close quickly and put away than a normal laptop or a tablet with a twist lid.
However, such alarm clocks don't have any internal storage, and have to spin up the CD to play mp3s. Not a big deal, I suppose, but unnecessary moving parts and expense. And I have a Koss CD clock radio that makes such a loud whirring/grinding noise when it starts up that it wakes me and pretty much negates any benefit of waking up to music.
As for using a computer in this way, I'd probably screw something up while banging on the keyboard looking for the snooze button, heh...
Considering the entire parent post, are you seriously suggesting that the PocketPC filesystem is more transparent and easier to work with than Palm's? While having something like Filez is necessary for complete control, it's just program and database files - usually one of each for each program. I prefer loading a single program file to dealing with stuff like this:
- Find/Remove bad uninstall info
- Find/Remove not valid shortcuts
- Find/Remove temporary and junk files
- Find/Remove PocketIE cache files
- Registry clean
(Shudders) Yeah, registry - now that's innovation!
Yeah, that will fit great in my jacket/labcoat pocket, and the minute of waiting for the laptop to boot will be made completely worthwhile when I spend 10 seconds looking something up or 5 seconds making a note.
No, they were obsessive-compulsive clean freaks and used one too many alcohol wipes...

Not to mention that the digital kind can be defeated with a trivial download of the proper software, while the analog kind requires either the purchase (or construction) of an elaborate piece of equipment or an old VCR.

Hmm, I'm not sure why the grandparent was modded down... employers wouldn't have much incentive to run such secret tests in, for example, Canada.

Antec Phantom 350 PSU
Gigabyte 6800 fanless (only 12 pipes, but not a big sacrifice...though if this liquid metal stuff works it should make things easier the next time I upgrade)
Thermalright CPU heatsink with a 120mm fan on a Zalman fan bracket and set at minimum on a Zalman fanmate control.
All in an Antec 3700BQE case with quiet 120mm exhaust fan.

A one slot and nearly-silent top end card.

Of course, he could just be a crackpot. He'd better have some equations and data that support his hypothesis and contradict black hole theory.
