It's great that you have such extensive knowledge of everyone's brain.

Seriously, these drugs can make life a lot easier for people. The problem comes with misdiagonsis, not the drugs themselves. For people with real ADD or ADHD (as opposed to a similar personality disorder, for example), they can allow the brain to operate normally, and by that I mean it actually allows more of the brain to function at a time. (Kids seem slower not because of the drugs, but because they can actually control their thoughts, which is a good thing.) If kids do not have ADD or ADHD, then the drugs may hinder them, however, that is no reason to fear them, but a reason to get a better doctor.

  12. my 2 cents on South Korea Grapples With Online Gaming Addicts · · Score: 4, Informative

For years I railed against MMORPGs, and their addictive qualities. I have a friend who clearly spends way to much time with them. Not going to bed until 6AM when he has class, etc. It's like he gives himself completely to the unreal world to escape, which only aggravates his real world problems.

Anyway, over a month ago I bought FFXI. I've been a huge final fantasy fan ever since I beat the first one back in elementary school, and since I have a strong willpower, I figured I'd give it a try.

The game is certainly enjoyable, as it requires cognitive thinking which more or less, is more interesting, or less risky, then everyday affairs. But I am able to drop it on a dime for a better social event.

Ergo, my values and thinking structure prevent me from getting attached to the game (or anything for that matter) when a better alternative arrives. I feel no loyalty towards the game, and no feeling that I *must* reach a certain level.

So it's as if I'm watching TV, since I can get up anytime I want, but generally I like to watch my favorite shows.

My point is that it's the personality of the user which determines their addiction to it, so the Korean trend is not likely a product of their culture so much as it is a product of more addictive personalities being exposed to the game, instead of other addictive activites which we tend to have many of in America.

It's possible their culture has an effect in creating addictive personalities, but that would be another issue altogether.

I understand your point, which is valid, but I also wanted to ensure that noone got *to* excited over this, and to press the point that much more testing of this is necessary.

I mean, how many earthquakes do they miss? What's their accuracy rate? There is a lot of power is claiming to predict catastrophe, but it only takes one public slip up to stain the entire operation.

At this accuracy it might help larger organizations, but I wouldn't sell my house on their advice.

Ergo, their system is little more impressive than mine in respect to the common man, because everyone knows where quakes hit. (if they predict every major quake like this for two years, I'll change my tune.)

In July of 2003, the team predicted an earthquake in Japan of magnitude 7 or higher by Dec. 28, 2003, in a region that includes Hokkaido. A magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck Hokkaido on Sept. 25, 2003.

What's the main reason players get disinterested in a game? Because they come across a level that they can't beat, and they get sick of the same ol' stuff over and over again.

If less people are buying these games, because they just aren't the master that you apparently are and would rather not get halfway through the game only to quit in frustration, it hurts the company so this move makes sense.

However, to satiate you, they should add an option to set the AI on the hardest possible skill level.
