I couldn't agree more. I recently bought a chemistry set for my 12 year old daughter. I was disheartened at the lack of chemicals/experiments that would have proved interesting and challenging. I remember when my parents got me a chemistry set. I came into the kitchen a week later, waving a beaker and announcing that I had produced hydrochloric acid. Still not sure why mom was so adamant about me going outside immediately!
If we take all the risk out of life, we also take out all of the reward.
First, I agree completely that legalizing drugs would be morally wrong and would not achieve the effects desired.
Second, I lived in Columbia for a year and a half, so I have seen the problem first hand. Third, I graduated from West Point and spent 4.5 years in M1 tanks (big uranium bullets), so I know something about military strategy.
I disagree that sending in traditional military forces into Columbia would solve the problem. The cartels have a lot of well hidden military resources and a huge check book to buy more. They have decades of experience using the inhospitable terrain to their advantadge. They blend into the civilian population completely. Unlike us, they won't be bothered by political borders or rules of engagement. This would make Vietnam look easy. With a LOT of good SF, we could make a BIG dent, but I'd bet against stopping it completely.
Moreover, even if you did stop it there, capitolism would still prevail. As long as we have the demand, men will choose to be suppliers. The greater risk might inflate the prices, but the flow would just divert, like the water in a stream.
Am I throwing my hands in the air and crying "Run away"? Like Hell! Just be realistic before you advocate offering the lives of our soldiers. Where I come from, that's a precious commodity.
I lived there for a year and a half. They are so discrete and blend in so well, they could have built it in one night, in your apartment complex, and you would never have known it!
Actually, no, you won't be sleeping with the fishes. They shoot you in the back of the head with a small caliber hand gun then leave your body in the gutter in front of your house as a warning to others. By the way, the body usually doesn't get cleaned up for at least 1-2 days, just to be sure.
"But those dysfunctional individuals microwaving delectible left over pizza, clearly they must be shot, incinerated, with their ashes encased in glass rods, buried under a mountain or maybe a salt flat, then covered with lye and never spoken of again."
No, no no. The lye goes into the glass rods with the ashes. How many times do we have to cover the basics??
I have very strong feelings about this case, that may not agree with yours. However, I would like to acknowledge the clarity and strength of your arguement. One of the things I love about our country is that I can enjoy intelligent, rational discussion of virtually any topic, even if I might disagree with the findings. Keep up the good work!

before this "broadband territory" is goneee.......
Designing a database with a binary field that does NOT have a default would be a SERIOUS mistake in our shop, but then again, this is Microsoft (wow, you can OVERFLOW a buffer?) we are talking about.
The US concern isn't really with a melt-down, its with by products. The soviet style reactors are world famous for producing material that can be made fisionable. Do you want Fidel to have an array of nukes, just as the dementia starts to kick in?
Now the guy driving next to you in that 38 ton Expedition, isn't just talking, he's looking at pr0n too? Hey, he's holding his phone with one hand, and wait.. where's his other hand? Personally, it gives me reason to fear.
Sure, our customers can opt out. It's right there on our web site. Just click on the little tiny smiley face in the bottom left corner, then follow the 4 subsequent links to the opt out policy page. Be sure to find the little "I refuse this offer" check box, then hit submit. "Oh" the submit button is broke?? Now how did that happen? We'll have our help desk take a look at it. (The web site will be down for a few days while they reboot the system.)
Wait, the calculation assumes that you only fit in one of those categories! Personally, I'm a Nerd and a Geek and would love to be a propellorhead. So the real figure must be much closer to $1B. Then again, we haven't included all the time 13 year old boys spend pulling down trailers, or the time 12 year old girls spend pining over our young darth vader, or.... Well you get the idea!
Worry about the jail term. When you have to listen to one more idiot talk about how his wife doesn't shave her fat legs often enough, you're going to get irresistable urge to choke the living *daylights* out of him (brought on by RF exposure, no doubt), and then its off for a nice vacation in the local lock-up.
The problem of avoiding the high speed flip is inertia. When the system realizes you've asked it to do a dangerous manuever, the inertia is already in place. Only 2 real choices, flip or don't do what the rider asked.
If you're not learning new languages, methods, techniques etc, then YES it will be a dead end career. My philosophy is simple: the day I don't learn anything is the day I start falling behind!
Picture this, you're attending your teams playoffs and the judge makes a white-cane call. You voice your opinion and Miss Priscilla stands up 2 rows behind you, abrasively questioning your judgement! Time for the better part of valor??
