    Yeah, you dig a hole and bury the company they pay you 700,000$. I heard you can give the money as a gift to your wife and its without any taxes. R&D during a recession is stupid. 1.) Because, efficency means cutting corners. 2.) Quality goes down the shitter to begot Quantity. 3.) Tired lazy people that never hit a lick start working like they have been doing it for years. I'm not bitching trust me, if you work for a huge corportation you see this crap. See here's the real problem. I'm preparing you for it. It's called gouging, price gouging. They do it with gas all the time. Greed. Let's paint the word on the wall. Big companies are greedy. A new car should cost only about half what they charge now. For years a new Camero was 18Grand Last time I checked They are 18 Grand. The new thunderbird if 40grand. It's not worth 40 grand. The old 60's thuderbird was worth 40 grand. The metal alone carries a higher value. Plasic is cheap. Quality, its all about the quality. There is a book suposidly about why quality is the problem with nations and places today. Zen of Motorcycle repair... saw it on amazon. I've yet to get or read it. Its suppose to be like Fight Club. Same noteriaty. l8r

    faster the video game. Duke3D ran superb.

    Graphics card companys are businesses. They
    release new features here and there to keep
    business. Top developers crack the whip more
    these days expecting more potential out of them.

    If you actaully believed what they wanted us to
    believe about the potental right now, we'd be
    simulating the earth. The crystal clear clarity
    of the rivers running and the oceans churning.

    That's bullshit. Code monkey's have known
    for a long time there's only so much these
    chunks of silicon will do. You basically have
    to hack the rest of it together. Carmack was
    mentioning something in his plan file once about comparing SGI quality 3D acceleration to PC quality. How the card does 3 jobs to one for the
    processor etc. But in PC standards we're still doing all the work and etc. So I've forgotten what he was specifically said but I still dont' think we're anywhere near the quality of SGI machines.

    I think we're just all getting tired of the lies by companies. Fucking tell the truth about what you can do or we want buy. I'm not attacking Nvidia, but I'm also tired of the fan noise from the huge fans on these cards. I've had the worst problems with my Nvidia card. The fan died. I had to visit radio shack and glue a 486 fan on mine, solder the splice i made for power. It over heats here and there and I really wish they would redisign the things.

    Sounds too good to be true. Well that is what you would expect me to say. I wish them the best of luck. Man I get into more arguments with friends over what languages to write in. I can already see the discussions on the special forum they will set up.

    Several people will want to code in strictly C++. Others, will complain and want C. Then still others will be pulling for the underdogs of implementation. Round one.
    Round two: BSP Trees, Oct trees, or this here.
    Round four: 3D Studio Max, Blender, or Lightwave.
    Crystal space, this, and unknown lib that. Sounds like another Redhat to me. There are already from scratch games being made. I foresee no need for a publish title. Yet I'm not necessarily against it. I really hope they take their time and plan this right if it comes to fruition. No 6 month miracle like EA' is notorious for. Please GOD no first person shooter. Quake 3 is doing just fine for me in that area. Neverwinter nights upon completion of their linux port will handle the 3rd person area. So I really don't see the need as I have stated. The games we have already are good games. They fill the void. What we really need is a really good 3dmax type modler for Unix. Free as in beer. l8r

    Humor aside, I'm sick of this propaganda on
    tv. Presidents need wars to make them look
    good. The past few presidents have had
    wars. Chances are there was no bomb on
    the space shuttle nor was there a stinger
    fired at it from afar. The new Airforce
    laser would have blasted it most likely.

    Facts are it was bound to happen. A 13,000
    mph bullet hammering through the ruff edges
    of space is a death sentence. Maybe this
    time around we'll not worry about money as much
    when building a space casket. Why not mold
    an entire ship out of the tile materials.
    Research some composites or something to take
    the heat. Retro-Rockets. God, we got the tech.
    We know how to build it. But crap we don't
    have the money? Why do we need money.

    I say, set aside some private organization like
    the Airforce or Navy to build the damn things.
    No matter what the personel do, they get paid
    the same thing depending on their pay scales.
    That is they get paid the same thing if they
    are building bombs or building space ships.
    Not the case with contractors and high paid
    scientists. They need a million to take a
    dump in a rent-a-john.

    I like seeing company's take time to develope an idea. I caught part of Extended Play the other day where they showcased some independant developers. I supppose that is what prompted the original post?

    I hear you on the fact that the majority of game companies out there are riding on the sale. How many games do the leading companies release that flops; yet, turns out a meager profit. That is out of the 200 games they released spaning all areas of the genre (console,PC,arcade?).

    See the problem is: Its like everywhere else, people are just looking to pickup their paychecks so they can scurry off to Walmart to spend money on shet they don't need. I had it good I suppose. Back when I was younger teachers cared and the only computer we had was in the library. There was more emphasis on hand writing than typing. Believe me that characteristic shows today. Just how good do you write in cursive?

    Could you if asked, hand-write a 7 page paper?

    I think the people going to school to be teachers really should reconsider. All to often the majority of them can't even apply calculas or high school physics. I bet you aren't even aware that the majority of Radiologists have trouble with college algebra. I know. One of my old girlfriends and all her friends were having a tough time dealing with it. Glad I haven't needed their services in quite a while. :)

    Nurses don't fair any better. Thats why its ok I don't get blood drawn and or too many shots. I'm scared to death I'll die. j/k

    See the problem is people don't have the initative to sit down and write the graphics algorithms. The math is actually simple once you absorb the terminology. There are quite a few good website out that are very good at explaining the math.

    nehe's will get you started with the basics and game tutorials' is for the collision detection.
    www.gamasutra.org or .com is good for ideas. Some of the articles on there are very technically oriented.

    I've been working on my game for about a year. I had to learn Blender and python but it only took me 3 months to catch on and have a exporting script where I could load the models in my game. To be honest, Unemployment was a real angel in disguise. I could stay up all day and all night coding on my game. Now that I have a job I don't have the time I once did to acomplish the large factors that make up a game's design. World transversal, Model loading, Collision systems.

    But I will say this, It is totally possible to develop a game on your own and without expensive propriatary products. They did it alot in the 80's with the exception of the propiratary products....

    Seems like a novel idea, charge somebody 10$ a month for letting you play on their servers. It's been around for a while right? Buliten Boards used to charge subscriptions. I guess it's a good way for them to get back some of the millions they lose after development is finished and the game hits the shelves of the local Walmart and Electronics Boutique.

    Well that would be what you would expect some Shitmonkey to bellow out. But sorry friends, I think the cracker that thought up this scheme is a rascal. Have you tried the current online games that are using this crap? I've been testing out Dark ages of Camelot and it highly smells of lazy programmers. There's no collision detection between monsters and the player nor the players themselves. Lot's of bugs. I can only guess Everquest is the same way considering the claims DAOC was based sorta on it.

    I can only hope Lucasarts has made every attempt to put out a flawless perfect title. Doubtful, considering we can only expect Mr Lucas' films to be Maticulously created.

    Well I think on topic this time around but maybe the rest of you are pissed off about these Online subscription based ploys to vamp your cash.

    Earthbound looks like a nice game. I went to the page linked in a aforementioned comment. The author makes some valid points about current game development practices. All that people care about is graphics feats these days. Game company's throw all the development hours into the graphics and not enough into the game-play. Read the reviews. Particle engines, and physics bound game engines are very apeasing to the eyes within an RPG or whatever classification of game you are playing. Yet they tend to lose their replayability.

    It's frightening that the comment, millions was used in the text. Why does everything cost millions to make? I wrote a pretty simple game in
    approximately one year's time. It didn't cost me anything but sleep.

    People chat and play games. That can be done on any operating system. There needs to be a three minute commerical advertising Linux. The IBM commericals don't count. I thinking along the lines of Redhat or Lindows variaties.

    Then a couple of the video game companies need to mandate development for only Linux. Then the consumer would be forced to use Linux. Now I can understand what you're thinking now.

    Yes, I agree. It's used quite a bit don't you think? Every new video game that comes out requires a minimum suggested system of no less than a Pentium IV, 256 megabytes of ram, a 3D accelerator with at least 32 megabytes of ram.

    Well, I say we all donate a dollar to get a commerical aired in support of the Linux operating system. Just like the Blender community donated money. We start a paypal account and get some funds gathered. Then we select a couple of very talented animators and designers to design a commerical. Buy up the time on a network like LIFETIME MOVIES, all house wives love this channgel and husbunds are forced to watch it along with the kids. Then the commerical is aired and we get an influx of users and curious consumers.

    Forgot where I read it but there was talk of a world before the earth. How the caretakers brought a colony to earth. More legend than anything else I suppose but an interesting read. I found it by searching for ancient astronauts on google.

    One comment on the subject made by somebody else was contamination by earth based equipment which is more likely. Our bacteria may thrive in that enviornment. I wonder if scientist factor in the threat we pose on probing our solar system with chemical and nuclear powered vehicles? Then how long before we start dumping nuclear waste on the moon and other places. Not a bad idea actaully.

    I agree doctors have no clue as to what the human body is capable of. I give them credit about general surgury. But for injuries, they tell you to take it lite in your recovery. I believe you have to push yourself 150% of what you normally did. I've damanged alot of my body over the past couple of years. Legs, arms, and back. In each instance I made sure I continuiously stretched the area as well as excercised it. Never used cold to stop swelling. Always heat. Every single time I made a full recovery.
    But what can you do or say to people that will not listen? They would rather throw away money on the easiest solution to their problems. Pills and snake oils want cure you. I've found Zinc is good to keep around too.

    You have to offer what the customer needs. A linux version of Warcraft 3 is not what we need. Besides, the game companies should handle that. To bluntly say they can't is another discusion entirely. Loki tried to cash in on the idea that offering Linux specific versions would make them a profit. It want. The way the Unix user thinks is that it should come along with the Windows and Macintosh versions. Can't milk a cow unless she's had a calf.

    Corel's Wordperfect was nice. Many people cut their teeth with Wordperfect. Then society was saturated with the demand that all documents be in Microsoft Word specific format. Classes were taught at colleges pushing you to accept Word. Soon there was no more need to keep Wordperfect on the lab machines. Demand went away. Mercy sakes, software isn't a religion.

    Maya probably sales good. I do not know how successful they are. Yet Maya is an industry standard for the Movie making people right? I think the real problem stems from the idea of squeezing everything you can out of your customers. Takes money to make money. Quality is another issue. Software isn't an assembly line. Because contrary to what the industry is preeching about code reusablity, deadlines, and specification you really have to be meticulous in writing software.

    Each project needs to be built like a Bentley, by hand. I'm not sure they still build them like that though.

    What kinds of things would Eartlings trade me for moon property? Air? Water? Sometimes I wonder if the Earth even belongs to us. Maybe the oceans belong to the whales and the land belongs to the ants. HAHAHAHAH
